WSOP Event #45: PokerStars’ Rousso on a tear

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifAfter being all-in for her last 30,000 or so not too long ago, Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso has gone on a monumental tear-up around her $10,000 Pot Limit Hold'em table - and shot above 300,000! It all happened in four quick hands just before the dinner break, which will have made the refreshments go down a treat.

Rousso takes up the story: "First I had [ad][qd] and limped under the gun for 5,000 and Bryn Kenney called, then Alex 'AJKHooiser1' Kamberis potted it, I called and my hand held - he had A-10," Rousso explained.

rousso10kplha.jpgVanessa Rousso

"A few hands later I'm in the big blind and called a Bryn Kenney raise of 12,500. There was a ten-high flop and he bet, I re-raised and he folded.

"When the button came round I raised with [ac][6c] and got one call. We checked it all the way down and my ace-high was good. Then my raise of 15,000 was re-raised to 26,500 and I called. The flop was K-10 and a small card, I make a big bet and get a fold!"

Phew! That's how you go from short-stack to seventh in chips in just a few of orbits of the table, folks.

There are still 44 players left in this event, with only the top 27 getting paid. Team PokerStars Pro ElkY will find it a struggle after bluffing off a large chunk of his remaining chips. He bet out with his missed flushed draw on a paired board, and was called by Justin Young with A-6 for second pair. ElkY is now down to just 10,000.

chen10kplh.jpgBill Chen

Still going well is Team PokerStars Mexico Pro JC Alvarado on 220,000, Germany's Florian Langmann on 110,000 and Friend of PokerStars Bill Chen with 115,000.

STOP PRESS ElkY found Q-Q just after dinner and got his last 10,000 in the middle, but was up against the A-K of Bobby Firestone. An ace on the flop, and the Frenchman is outta here.

WSOP Event #45: Two ladies, one pair of queens

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifVanessa Rousso sits silently in the small blind. Wearing dark glasses, she doesn't move a muscle. It's folded around to her and she counts out 7,200 and pushes them out to the middle in place of her 1,200 blind. It amounts to a 4,800 raise of Kathy Liebert's big blind.

Unlike the Team PokerStars Pro, Liebert has been animated all afternoon, chatting away to the table as if the matter at hand, day two of the WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Hold'em World Championship, was an irrelevance. Now she, too, fell silent as she surveyed Rousso's raise, then looked at her two cards. She liked them, counting out chips ready for a re-raise not a call.

roussoliebert.jpgVanessa Rousso and Kathy Liebert

She settled on re-raising by another 12,400, forcing Rousso, who before the hand was up to over 100,000, into the tank. "How many more do you have?" she asked Liebert, who then studiously counted them out... it was about 40,000.

Rousso didn't like that. "I may fold. Will you show me if I fold?" No response. "Will you show me?" she asked again as she motioned to fold. This time Liebert nodded, and as Rousso announced fold, Liebert turned over the ladies, [qh][qc]. Rousso nodded in approvement - of Liebert's hand and her own fold, she showed [ad][8s].

So a relatively narrow escape in a battle of the blinds. A little earlier, Rousso had raked in a nice pot when she and three others called a 6,000 bet pre-flop. The dealer put out [5h][5s][4c] and the original raiser put out a 13,000 continuation bet. It's folded around to Rousso who doesn't take long to decide on a re-raise - a healthy pile of orange 5,000 chips are tossed into the middle. It's good enough to scoop the lot.

There are 69 of the 275 starters still left in the event, and as well as Rousso we have four other PokerStars players in ElkY, Florian Langmann, JC Alvarado and Bill Chen chasing the 27 cash spots. The winner takes home $633,335.

elky10kplh.jpgElkY

By a quirk of fate three of these players have similar stacks of around 70,000, as did ElkY until he just won a big pot to take him up to 140,000.

On a board of [4d][qh][8h][jd][2d], and with 40,000 or so already in the pot, ElkY tried his luck with another bet of 30,000 - called by Jeremy Rafalowicz, who was somewhat disappointed to see the Frenchman turn over [kd][6d] for the flush.

WSOP Event #31: Vanessa Rousso shooting for HORSE final table

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifWe're into the final day of the WSOP $1,500 HORSE event - and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso is still going strong with 23 runners left.

She has 131,000 chips, nestled half-way through the pack chasing chip leader Fabrice Soulier with 351,000.

Rousso is enoying a fanstastic year, and this is already her third cash at the WSOP. Each of today's survivors are guaranteed $5,906, but that figure rises dramatically as the first place and $247,033 payout approaches.

roussohorse153.jpgVanessa Rousso

Should she make the final table, it would make for an excellent day for PokerStars, which already has John Duthie in the final of the $10K World Heads-up Championship.

Good luck today, Vanessa!

WSOP Event #31: Rousso galloping in HORSE

Monday, June 15th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifWhile we wait for the final two matches in the $10,000 World Heads-up Championship to begin, which sees Team PokerStars Pro John Duthie take on Nathan Doudney, we had a quick peek at day two of the $1,500 HORSE.

There we found Vanessa Rousso near the top of the leaderboard on 59,000. With just 96 of the 770 runners left, they're closing in fast on the 72 cash positions.

roussohorse15.jpgVanessa Rousso

Team Pro Rousso is having a great year and a good result in HORSE will further enhance her blossoming reputation, not that it needs much of a push, as our recent report on ther EPT Monte Carlo €25,000 High Roller victory confirms.

WSOP Event #2: Raymer, Veldhuis riding high – Rousso cashes

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifTeam PokerStars Pro Greg Raymer is in familiar territory. The Fossilman is very much at home in the Rio as his WSOP record testifies: the world championship in 2004 and an amazing run one year later that so nearly saw him reach the final table again. And there's been other significant WSOP cashes since, all of which confirm his status as a WSOP big-game specialist - and explain why he looks so comfortable near the top of the end-of-day-two, $40,000 no limit event leaderboard.

raymerday2a40k.jpgGreg Raymer

Earlier today many in the poker community were willing on Chris Moneymaker - who started the day second in chips - reasoning a victory in this high-profile tournament would do wonders for the game's popularity among the masses. Yet it was not to be for the man from Tennessee, who busted shortly after the dinner break - first losing a huge coinflip with Tony G, and then soon after fatally running his pocket tens into Ted Forrest's kings. He walked away from the table in disgust - had he stayed for the flop the first card he would have seen was a ten... the second, a king.

moneymakerday2a40k.jpgChris Moneymaker

With Moneymaker's demise, the general backing turned to Raymer - as a victory for him would also bring welcome publicity to the game seeing as he is a popular figure, an ambassador and more proof that poker must indeed need educated craft and not rely heavily on luck as so many detractors would have us believe. As play drew to a close tonight, Raymer was dancing merrily to the community's tune, fourth in chips on 2,287,000.

The bubble - an expensive one at that - burst just ten minutes before the end of play when Neil Chriss bust in 28th. Moments later, Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso went in 27th, picking up the first of the $71,858 prizes, another creditable result following her audacious victory in the EPT Monte Carlo €25,000 high roller event. Her day had been a tale of holding on, then securing two key double ups to carry her into the money, before falling in a classic race when her Q-Q fell to Keith Lehr's A-K, with the winning ace falling cruelly on the river.

roussoday2a40k.jpgVanessa Rousso

Another Team Pro who looked capable of cashing was Humberto Brenes, but he, like Moneymaker, was to fall soon after dinner, when his A-7 failed to catch up with Raymer's 9-9.

Raymer has more PokerStars expertise for company near the top of the leaderboard, where online star Lex Veldhuis, a member of Team PokerStars Holland Pro, has been flirting with the chip lead for two days. The chip counts show he ended the night fifth in chips, with 2,103,000 - a good day's work for the Dutchman, who is looking here to secure his biggest live cash result to date.

But both Raymer and Veldhuis still have a mountain to climb to pick up the bracelet and the $1,891,012 first prize. With 23 players remaining, the top of the leaderboard tonight is Justin Bonomo on 2,678,000, just ahead of Ted Forrest, who had overslept on the dinner break and was half an late returning to his seat. How Moneymaker must wish he had napped for just a little longer.

veldhuisday2a40k.jpgLex Veldhuis

We'll be back tomorrow for day three of the $40,000 event, plus day two of the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low 8 or Better, and the start of event number four, the $1,000 no limit event which has already surpassed 5,000 registrations. Who was it who said poker had reached its peak?

Official overnight chip counts, end of day two. 23 players left:

Justin Bonomo, 2,678,000
Ted Forrest, 2,586,000
David Baker, 2,367,000

WSOP Event #2: Rousso chasing more high-roller success

Friday, May 29th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifThe last level was not a good one for Team PokerStars Pro. Ivan Demidov went, then Gavin Griffin, followed by Joe Hachem and finally Dennis Phillips. Thank goodness, then, for Vanessa Rousso who is ducking and diving to keep her stack healthy.

Only a few weeks ago in Monte Carlo, I reported on her stunning EPT €25,000 High Roller win, a result that showed her previous good results were no fluke. This event will take even more skill, courage and a bit of luck to take down. With blinds shooting up to 1,500-3,000 with 400 ante, there is no point in simply hanging around - and Rousso is certainly at her best when attacking. It's a dangerous tactic, of course, and her stack today has been up and down as a result.

Up to 177,000 in the first level from her 120,000 starting stack, her stack down again to 140,000 or so. While Lex Veldhuis and Chris Moneymaker continue to fight for the chip lead, Rousso sits ahead of the other Team Pro players Greg Raymer, John Duthie and Johannes Strassmann.

rousso40k.jpgVanessa Rousso

Rousso had shared the same felt as Ivan Demidov for most of the day, but he was unable to repeat the magic he found to final table the WSOP main event last year. His stack never got any forward momentum, and he finally bust when his A-K ran into the pocket kings of Eric Kesselman.

Hachem's exit was less of a clash of the big hands. He was down to his last 10,000 and made a stand from under the gun before the blinds came around to do more damage. Alas, he only held 8-10, and he never overtook Hasan Habib's A-7.

Top ten chip counts, mid way through level 9, blinds 1,500-3,000 (400). 111 players left:

Michael DeMichele, 690,000
Justin Bonomo, 570,000
Lex Veldhuis, Team PokerStars Holland Pro, 330,000
Antonia Esfandiari, 470,000
Emil Patel, 530,000
Kyle Wilson, 465,000
Chris Moneymaker, Team PokerStars Pro, 460,000
Alan Sass, 440,000
Ted Forrest, 380,000
Alex Jacob, 370,000

EPT €25K High Roller: Vanessa Rousso wins €720,000 in Monte Carlo

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

EPTTeam PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso already had more than $1.3 million in tournament winnings when she arrived in Monte Carlo. She hardly needed to prove her ability to the poker world, but if there's one thing that cements a place among the game's great and the good, then winning a High Roller event will do the trick. It's not just the big prize money, it's the knowledge you have beaten some of the very best players to get it.

This field in the EPT Monte Carlo €25,000 High Roller was no different. Three days ago, 79 of the world's best players paid up, including a host of Team PokerStars Pros like ElkY - who won the High Roller in the PCA in January - Peter Eastgate, Barry Greenstein, William Thorson and Alexandre Gomes. Also lining up were Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Erik Seidel, Gus Hansen, Devilfish and Tony G, the last of whom went on to take third place earlier today.

We reached a final table of eight late last night, and when we lost half of those in the first three hours of play today, everyone was prepared for an early finish. But it took a couple of hours before PokerStars.de ShootingStar Florian Langmann departed, and around five more hours before Tony G bust when his A-6 failed to hold up against Randy Dorfman's Q-9.

Heads-up developed into something of a marathon, too. Dorfman started with a 2-1 chip lead, lengthened it, lost it, got it back again, then lost it all. The killer blow came on a 3-9-8-5-K board, when Dorfman's K-5 for two pair ran into Rousso's 6-7 for the nut straight. He had been a worthy opponent, and will draw some comfort from going home with €434,000.

_MG_8925_Neil Stoddart.jpgVanessa Rousso

The night, though, belonged to Rousso, who was supported on the rail all day by her partner, fellow Team PokerStars Pro Chad Brown

"As long as I got my money in good I thought I had a chance. I'm probably going to go and have a good cry after this!

"I have given 110% over the last three days. A few weeks ago I finished second in the NBC Heads Up Championships and I was happy, but at the end of the day second places are no good. You want to win."

Congratulations, Vanessa, on a brilliant performance.

Rousso makes history at NBC Heads Up Championship

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso has just done something no other person has done before.

Rousso went to the NBC Heads Up Poker Championship in Las Vegas and faced, without question, the toughest path to the finals as any player ever. After beating the likes of Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, and ElkY, Rousso made it deeper in the 64-player person field than any woman ever has.

2009_NBC_NHUPC_DAY_3_VANESSA5.jpg

Rousso's blitz through poker's legends gained her even more respect. Her seat at the final table put her in the history books. Though she couldn't take down the championship, she still proved her place in the poker world. For her efforts, she will take home $250,000.

Full results from the Team PokerStars Pro players are below. Congrats to all of them for their big finishes.

2. Vanessa Rousso -- $ 250,000
4. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier -- $125,000
5. Daniel Negreanu -- $ 75,000

WCOOP: Rousso sees online poker history approaching

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

by Vanessa Rousso

As the inaugural PokerStars WCOOP $10k buy-in event looms large, I feel like I did as a kid in the days leading up to Christmas. On September 7th at 2:30 p.m ET, Poker Stars will launch WCOOP Event 5, a $10,300 buy-in with a whopping $2 million guaranteed prize pool. With that kind of guarantee, you can expect at least 200, players in the running. Never before (to my knowledge at least) has there been an online poker tournament of this scale--rivaling some of the most prestigious live big-buy-in circuit events. You can rest assured that many of the world's top pros will ante up for this first-of-its-kind event. So even if you can't afford to play, you won't want to miss the action from the sidelines. PokerStars will be running WCOOP livestream radio broadcasts on the 7th to cover this event in addition to a highlights show on pokerstars.tv on the 8th.

As for me, I just arrived in Barcelona for the EPT Barcelona event, which begins here on the 10th of September, only to realize that if I intended to keep up with the daily WCOOP events (which I wouldn't miss for anything), I would have to completely switch up my sleep schedule. This is because the events are scheduled for 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. EST daily--which translates to 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. in the time zone that I am in! So it looks like I won't be getting to bed until 6:00 a.m. or so, in order to be prepared to go deep in the WCOOP events. Luckily for me, the EPT events here happen to start unusually late in the day (3 p.m. for the main event and as late s 9 p.m. for some of the prelims). This means that my night-owl sleep schedule will jive well with playing in some of the live events I plan to play in the coming weeks as well.

With that, I'm off to get some dinner...or, would that be breakfast? :) Best of luck to all of you that plan to join me in the upcoming WCOOP madness, and feel free to stop by my table anytime!

Vanessa Rousso is a member of Team PokerStars.
