Darkillermax claims big win for China in Sunday Million!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

With 7,415 competitors in the October 26th edition of the PokerStars Sunday Million, taking down the top prize is an accomplishment for any player. But for a player with the hopes of a nation on his shoulders, it’s an even greater victory. When Darkillermax took down the top prize he claimed one of the biggest wins for a Chinese player in the history of internet poker! Darkillermax took a huge chip lead into the final table and rode it all the way to victory and a $174,656 payday.

Darkillermax is currently studying in Reims, France, and got his start on PokerStars in February 2007. He started off on PokerStars for the tournaments, and switched to cash games after a few months. After seeing the structure of the WCOOP and other major tournaments, he switched back to tournaments, and succeeded past his wildest dreams when he took down the Sunday Million less than two years after picking up the game!

He describes himself as a recreations player, but adds “since this win I might consider playing more big buy-in tournaments online and live, and might go pro.” Even with no live tournament experience, we have no doubt that he’ll be able to translate his online success into big wins on the green felt as well. Even after his success with No Limit Hold’em tournaments, he calls Omaha his favorite game because it “needs more skill and guts.”

We asked him to describe one key hand that propelled him to the final table, and he told us this story – “I had K-J suited and raised from the hijack. The button re-raised me and I supposed that was a squeeze play and with my stack I could make the call and see the flop. The flop came A-9-7 rainbow. At this point I thought I might move my opponent off his hand if he had a pocket pair. I decided to check and see what he does. He thought for a few seconds and bet 1/3 of the pot. I really felt weakness at that point and I insta-shoved all in. He used his time bank and finally made the call with A-5. I was almost drawing dead, but a Q on the turn and a 10 on the river gave me the runner-runner straight.” Even with the inevitable abuse in the chat box, Darkillermax used that big pot to give himself breathing room and then wielded his big stack like a hammer all the way to a deal when play reached heads-up and then the win and the extra $30K for the victor!

With a big boost to his bankroll, this self-described “Chinese boy” is poised to do great things in the world of poker both online and live!

Daniel “Allanon85″ Drescher claims top Sunday Prize!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Daniel “Allanon85” Drescher outlasted 7,244 opponents to take down first place in the October 5th edition of the PokerStars Sunday Million. Coming into the final table as a short stack, Drescher quickly doubled through former Sunday Million champ Soren Kongsgaard, fresh off an appearance at the PokerStars EPT London Main Event. That double-up and a final table of tough, aggressive play propelled Drescher to first place and $177,450.00 for first place! The champ took a few minutes to chat with us after his biggest win to date.

A converted cash game player, Drescher has been playing on PokerStars for about two years now. He started off primarily with no limit hold’em cash games, but switched over to pure tournament play last month. I’d have to say that was a decision that paid off well! A big fan of the $109 tourneys on PokerStars, Drescher also enjoys the $55 rebuy tourneys, and of course now adds the Sunday Million to his list of favorite games.
Drescher considers himself a semi-professional player, since he returned to school this month. Certainly a $177K bankroll boost will cover a lot of tuition and books! An online player working to make his transition to live play, Drescher hopes to win a satellite to upcoming EPT events on PokerStars and make his first live cash there.

Coming into the final table short, Drescher cites his early double-up through Kongsgaard as a key to the win. On the very next hand, he took out sjco22 with Ad-Jc to sjco22’s Kh-Tc. Drescher’s Ace-high held up on a board of Qh-3s-2c-4c-3d, and he was off to the races. He had one monster win when he spiked a Jack with A-J to double through cdbr3799’s A-Q, and from there it was all academic as he took the lion’s share in a three-way deal and then went on to claim the extra $30,000 left for the winner. All in all, a commanding performance from Daniel “Allanon85” Drescher in his first Sunday Million victory!

Tuffy Cat claws her way to Sunday Million win!

Monday, October 6th, 2008

When low-stakes sit n’ go player Tuffy Cat used 450 FPP to win a satellite seat into the Sunday Million, she almost didn’t register. But finally, during late registration, she bit the bullet and signed up. Many hours later, she clawed her way to victory over a field of 7,133 players and purred as she curled up around a $184,500 prize in September 28th Sunday Million. We caught up with the cat who ate a bunch of canaries a few days after her biggest online cash ever.

Coming from a family that loves games, poker became a natural outgrowth of that. Tuffy grew up playing cards with her late father, her brothers and more recently her nephews. Once she got the live poker bug, she built a library of books, CDs and DVDs to learn the game. Since her retirement in June from the IT world, Tuffy has taken the time to focus on her game, with obvious great results.

Tuffy Cat plays only on PokerStars, and had been a fixture in the low-stakes sit n’ go tournaments for the past four years. “There is nothing like practice and thousands of hands at low stakes games online really helps [to learn the game]. I have found that once people start playing for money, even .02/.05 tables, they play really hard.” She has played the Sunday Million several times before, but never cashed for significant money. This satellite entry was her biggest cash by far, with her biggest tourney win before coming in a $1 tourney with over 1,700 players. The field this Sunday was a lot deeper, and a lot more expensive, but Tuffy Cat applied the same basic strategy that won her the seat and took down the top prize with no deal at the final table.
This cool cat is no stranger to live tables, either, making her WSOP debut this year in the Ladies’ Event.

“Even though I didn’t cash, the experience of playing with some real pros was amazing and inspired me to work on my game. I finished around 170 out of 1190 players. I even got to play at the same table with Kathy Liebert for several hours. Not only at the same table but right next to her (on her left). In fact Kathy was the person who knocked me out of the tournament. I was low stack and Kathy had raised the pot. I had AK and went all in against her pocket pair of 9’s. Her 9’s held up and I was out, but what a great time and experience!!!! Part of my [Sunday Million] winnings will go to playing the main event next year.”

Congratulations to Tuffy Cat on her great run, turning 450 FPPs into $184,500!

PokerStars Sunday Million Winner Profile – avkid86

Friday, August 1st, 2008

When Aryan “avkid86” Virabi won a satellite into last week’s Sunday Million, he never imagined that his second try at online poker’s biggest weekly tournament would end with him in first place and taking down $138,101.00 for his evening’s work. The top prize was the result of a four-way deal at the final table that left $30,000 for the eventual winner. In last place when the deal was struck, Virabi displayed patience and tenacity in outlasting two opponents to get to heads-up play.

It only took a dozen hands or so for Virabi to take the lead, and then he flopped top two pair on the final hand to grab the brass ring that every online player dreams of – a Sunday Million win on PokerStars. For a college student whose previous biggest tournament win was about $1,000, this was a heck of a jump. We caught up with Virabi this week and got a little bit of the skinny on his background.

A college student, Virabi uses poker “to get away from all the work.” He plays a lot with friends at local casinos and some home games, but discovered online poker about three years ago. Once he found PokerStars in the beginning of 2007, he was hooked ever since.

This was only his second shot at the Sunday Million, as he only plays when he can satellite in. A fan of the big MTTs, Virabi also enjoys the multi-table turbo sit n’ gos on PokerStars. He’s mostly a hold’em player, but sprinkles in some Omaha Hi/Lo for an occasional change of pace.

Living in the UK has given Virabi the chance to test his skills in some local casinos and tournament series, including the GUKPT last year. He made the final table in a GUKPT side event last year and cut a deal at the final table to net nearly $12,000.

Virabi said that the big turning point for him came late in the tournament when he was able to put together a streak of five hands in a row where he tripled his short stack and moved back into contention for the final table. When the idea of a chop came up with four left, Virabi happily accepted a deal that guaranteed him at least $100,000. With the deal in place, he thought “I’ve come this far may not get another chance so let’s make the most of it.” He certainly did, outlasting three opponents with bigger stacks to claim his first ever Sunday Million victory and the lion’s share of the prize money.

Congrats to Aryan “avkid86” Virabi for a spectacular final table performance!

PokerStars pumps up guaranteed tournaments

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

PokerStars has upped the guarantees on most of its guaranteed tournaments. Overall, the site is now hosting 483 guaranteed prize pool tournaments per week, up from 199 just last week. The overall guaranteed prize pool? That’s going up by quite a bit as well, from approximately $7.5 million to more than $13 million.

Starting this Sunday, the PokerStars Sunday Million will now have a $1.5 million guaranteed prize pool. That’s not just a one-week promotion. That’s the way it’s going to be all the time.

The Sunday Million is not the only big tournament getting a boost. Also starting this Sunday, the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up will see its $500,000 guarantee increased to $750,000. The Super Tuesday, held each Tuesday night at 19:55 ET, is changing from a $250,000 guarantee to a $300,000 guarantee.

Finally, if you missed the news, there is now a weekly $530 No-Limit Hold’em tournament on Sundays with a $250,000 guarantee. At the end of each month, this tournament will have a $1,050 buy-in.

So, there you have it. It’s not the kind of news you see very often, but when it happens, it’s big. The guarantee increases have already started, so go forth and get your share.

From Freerolls to $235K – xanja turns pennies into huge score in 2X Sunday Million

2x_promo_header.jpg

It’s one thing to take the chip lead at the final table of the PokerStars Sunday Million. It’s another thing to take a commanding chip lead at the final table of the largest Sunday Million in PokerStars history. And it’s something else entirely to take the chip lead at the Sunday Million final table when you’ve never deposited a penny into your online account! That’s exactly what happened to xanja when he knocked out sjoko in 7th place in last week’s Sunday Million tournament.

Thanks to the PokerStars 2X promotion running all July, last week’s Sunday Million was really the Sunday Two Million, with a total prize pool of $2,836,200. Xanja took over the chip lead with six players to go, and rode his big stack all the way to a favorable chip-count chop and a $235,000 payday! We caught up with xanja as he was still trying to process everything about his fantastic run.

Mostly a $5 & $10 SNG player, xanja took a shot at the Sunday Million because of the 2x promotion doubling the prize pool. It also more than doubled the field, as over 14,000 players registered. Xanja got lucky early to survive, saying “I went all-in with pocket sevens after being raised. My opponent held pocket jacks. At that moment I thought the tournament was over for me, but the third seven appeared on the turn and I won the hand. Otherwise I had played really carefully and only played the best hands.”

One of the biggest hands of the tournament came when play was four-handed, and before any deal had been made. After a preflop raise from PokerMurphy1, kpax22 moved all in over the top with Js-10c. Xanja re-raised to isolate with Ah-Kh, and PokerMurphy1 folded. Kpax22 picked up a straight on the turn when the board read 5c-9h-Ks-Qh, but the 2h on the river gave xanja the flush and sent kpax22 to the rail. That hand left xanja a huge chip leader, and the remaining three players cut a deal to give $235,000 to xanja and leave $30,000 to play for. Xanja fell short of the final prize when TimDawg888 caught a couple of big hands to double through him and eventually take down the Sunday Million.

Xanja’s poker career started two years ago in freerolls, and he eventually built up his bankroll without ever making a deposit, winning a few pennies here and there from freerolls and then moving into sit n’ gos and MTTs. Keeping to his bankroll-building strategy, he won a satellite to get into the Sunday Million, making his return on investment even more staggering!

Fortunately for xanja, he has the summer off from his studies until September, so he didn’t have to get up and go to work after playing until the wee hours of the morning Sunday night. His future poker plans include keeping a nest egg on PokerStars from this big score while investing the rest, and eventually playing the WSOP Main Event. We can definitely see big things ahead for this young star!

Chris “GoMukYaSelf” Sparks – Sunday Million Winner Profile

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008
PokerStars Blog Pic.jpg Chris Sparks has played as GoMukYaSelf on PokerStars since 2004, and logged an impressive 46 final table finishes in that time, in everything from $11 MTTs all the way up to his win in this week’s Sunday Million for $135,334.75. Chris took a little time out from his summer to talk with us about his game, his plans for the future, and how he has translated online skill into live success.

Like many college students, Chris started playing small tournaments in his dorm at Ohio State University with his friends, then made his first deposit onto PokerStars in 2004. His first major success came in 2005 when he parlayed the last $11 in his PokerStars account into a $1,400 win in a multi-table tournament. From there, he began to move up levels and perfect his tournament game, eventually taking down the Nightly Hundred Grand in November 2007 for his largest cash at the time. He looks forward to continued success in online tournaments, remarking “With the WCOOP coming up soon, hopefully I will be able to top this finish.”

Nowadays, Chris plays mainly cash games, transitioning his focus to the mid-stakes no limit hold’em cash tables on PokerStars. He can be seen multi-tabling up to 24 tables at a time and he believes that while “there is nothing like the thrill of playing in a large tournament, but I feel like the long term earning potential for a skilled cash game player is much higher on average.”

Chris plays mainly no limit hold’em, but has been branching out into Omaha to broaden his horizons. With five wins in his first 60 Omaha tournaments, we’d have to say that he has a bright future in multiple games! Another transition for Chris this year was into the live arena. He recently made his first trip to Las Vegas following his 21st birthday, and celebrated in style by winning one of the Caesar’s Deep Stack tournaments for a $28,000 first prize! His first major live tournament was the LAPT Rio, which he enjoyed greatly and has plans to play more live events as his schedule allows.

What the future holds for Chris is undecided so far. He graduated with a degree from Ohio State University this June with a degree in Marketing and Psychology, and has a job lined up with a Fortune 50 company in September. That is, if he doesn’t go pro. According to Chris, “The plan was that this summer was going to be a "trial period" where I give the professional poker lifestyle a shot for a few months. Worst case scenario, if things did not go well, I would just start earning a steady paycheck in a great job for a great company. Obviously, the summer is off to a pretty decent so far, but I still haven't made up my mind either way yet.” It’s great to have options like that in front of you!

On his way to first place in the Sunday Million, Chris outlasted a field of 6,520 other players and played top-notch poker for over ten hours. When asked about his success in that event, Chris said “It is no secret that to win a tournament of this size you have to both play at the top of your game and get a little bit lucky. I was fortunate to have both happen on Sunday as I was able to be selectively aggressive while staying patient and minimizing mistakes. At the same time, I was able to win a couple of key coin flips along the way; which helped me accumulate chips.”

When the field reached the final three, Chris suggested a three-way chop that locked up $105,000 for each player and left $30,000 remaining for the winner. He said “I thought that chopping would give me a psychological advantage. From my observation of previous Sunday Million final tables, I saw that many players would play somewhat careless after the chop even though there was still $30,000 on the line. Also, one of the other players mentioned that he was also playing [another final table], so I thought that if he had already locked up $100k in this tournament that he would probably shift his focus more towards the other tournament. From the way that the final two hands went down, I think that my strategy worked.”

Chris’ psychological strategy left him with a $30,000 edge over his remaining foes, and put him on the road to great success in the future, no matter if he decides to go pro, or take a great job and remain a recreational player. Congrats to Chris “GoMukYaSelf” Sparks, and the best of luck with whatever the future holds!

Sunday Million Winner profile – tEh_R3aLde4l is the real deal

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

For some players, a win in the PokerStars Sunday Million is the latest in a string of live and online tournament successes. For some players, it is a lightning bolt out of the blue that catapults a lucky satellite winner into a whole new stratosphere of play. And for some dedicated students of the game, like June 22nd winner the_R3aLde4l, it is a logical step in the process of becoming a top-level tournament player.

We caught up with tEh_R3aLde4l as he was taking a break from a live tournament and got a little background on this young tournament stud. TEh_R3aLde4l got into poker in a familiar setting nowadays – college. Like many younger players, he and his friends saw poker on television and from there “[it] took over our entire school…as soon as I could start playing online, I did so.” After watching a friend find success in online SnG tournaments, he picked up a few poker books and started studying. In a few short years, he went from “probably one of the worst players in our home game” to a six-figure winner, besting a field of 6,382 players in the biggest weekly guarantee tournament in the world.

TEh_R3aLde4l cites having a group of friends to discuss hands with as a key to his development as a poker player, but adds that he is constantly growing and learning new games. When asked about games other than hold’em, he responded “I am just starting to play some PLO as the game is getting really popular where I'm from, there is tons of juicy action so it would be silly not to learn the game.”

All tournaments require some luck to make the final table, and tEh_R3aLde4l’s Sunday Million win was no different. He describes two key hands that put him into position to win, one a short-stack move from the small blind with 9-5 that cracked his opponent’s aces, and another lucky break on the final table bubble. Holding 5s-4s, he moved all in over the top of an aggressive opponent’s button raise, only to find himself up against A-K. His cards were live, and the flop of 4-6-8 was good to him. His pair of fours held up, and that hand put him into second place going into the final table, where he eventually made a three-way deal and then took down the title and the extra $30,000 left for the winner.

A tournament specialist, tEh_R3aLde4l cites the late night $109 30K guarantee tournament as one of his favorites. He prefers smaller field tournaments that provide a lot of play for the money, such as tourneys that offer one rebuy and one add on. His win in the Sunday Million is his biggest tournament win to date, but he has logged multiple final tables and wins in smaller events, with several wins over $10K. He considers this a stepping-stone to bigger and better things, saying, “I'm coming back for more and I want to be one of the best tournament players around someday.” I have no doubt we’ll be hearing a lot from this young man in the future.

The Sunday Million goes off every week and consistently produces the biggest field and the healthiest prize pool found anywhere on the internet. You can satellite in for as little as $3, with satellites going all the time at PokerStars.com.
