Weekly Dose: Holy WCOOP!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgIs it just us or is time flying while we're having fun?

We did a little math this morning and, sure enough, by this time next week, the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker will be over, just a happy memory dancing on our tired synapses. All we'll have left are the posts on this blog and the work of the good people over at PokerStars.tv.

With all that in mind, let's revel in the present with the Weekly Dose, the best of online videos and poker.

First up is a look back at the second week of WCOOP through the eyes and virtual lens of PokerStars.tv.

Watch WCOOP 2009: Round-Up Show 2 on PokerStars.tv

And holy cow...I mean, seriously, HOLY.

As you you might have heard, PokerStars is auditioning qualifiers for the PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge.

We have already seen some doozies, but this one has us getting all reverent. Ever sat across the table from this guy?

Check out this South Carolina priest who plays poker.

If the priest wins the casting call and gets on TV, he'll be playing against Kid Poker himself, Daniel Negreanu. It just so happens that Negreanu is featured on this week's Inside Deal from ESPN.com.

Finally, we're getting a couple weeks of rest before the kick off of the biggest EPT London event. We're getting psyched up by watching some old videos of previous events there.

Wanna join us?

Weekly Dose: WCOOP, EPT take the spotlight

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgNormally on the Weekly Dose, we go all cross-platform from You Tube, to ESPN, to the venerable PokerStars.tv in our attempts to find the best in poker video on the internet. This week, as the World Championship of Online Poker kicks off in record-breaking fashion and the EPT event in Barcelona runs toward the final table, we're finding more than we can possibly watch on PokerStars.tv alone.

Our first selection on the Weekly Dose is a look back at the first ten WCOOP.com events. There have been some massive wins already and millions of dollars in prize money awarded.

You can see who's winning the most in the video below.

Meanwhile, EPT Barcelona is about at its end, and the video blog team caught up with Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier.

jason-mercier-weekly-dose.jpg

If you're unfamiliar with Mercier, he's the man who won EPT San Remo a couple of seasons ago and went on to win just about everything you could possibly imagine since.

Check out the enlightening interview with him below.

Mercier also plays a part in the video below.

Now, we'll be honest here, what you're about to watch is pretty remedial stuff mean for people who are just starting to play. That said, Mercier probably gives the best performance overall and there is probably some comedic value in watching members of Team PokerStars Pro tell you the rankings of hands.

Also, this probably reopens the debate about whether a royal flush should actually be considered a hand ranking rather than a hand name, when, as everyone knows, a royal flush is only the best possible straight flush, and thus not really an independent hand ranking.

But, I digress.

Check out the video below to see who gets the privilege of showing you what a royal flush looks like.

Weekly Dose: Ramdin wheeling and Dealing

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgWhat do you get when you mix a qualifier for the Million Dollar Challenge with a guy who can draw Iron Man?

Well, you get Jerry Bingham, a guy, who quite frankly shocked us with his audaciousness and lack of manners. Well, something like that. You'll have to watch to see what we're talking about. After all, the guy is Doyle Brunson's love child. Or, again, something like that.

See, the Million Dollar Challenges gives people a chance to play across the table from Daniel Negreanu on TV, and part of the process is creating an audition video. We've already seen several of the attempts from the casting room, but we thought this one would be a good example for today's Weekly Dose of video.

Elsewhere in the world of small screen video, ESPN's Inside Deal just dropped another new episode on us this morning and it features none other than Team PokerStars Pro Victor Ramdin.

Watch the video to discover the one charity Ramdin won't be donating to.

Finally, you're probably aware the PokerStars Sunday Million is going on hiatus for a couple of weeks while we play the World Championship of Online poker. With that in mind, here's your final taste of the regular stuff for a while.

Watch Online Poker Show: Sunday Million - August 30th, 2009 on PokerStars.tv

Don't forget, WCOOP begins on Thursday. I'm certain we're going to see some good Weekly Dose matertial out of that.

Until then, happy watching.

Weekly Dose: Negreanu Frenchy?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgThe gauntlet? Yeah, that's it on the ground there. It's been thrown.

Imagine this: three men in middle America in the middle of a birthday celebration that take time out of their party to call out Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu.

Last week, the PokerStars Blog debuted the Weekly Dose, a look around the net for some of the more interesting videos that relate to our little corner of the world. This week, our friend behind the PokerStars_com Twitter account found this gem.

First, some background.

PokerStars.net has recently partnered with FOX Sports to put on the Million Dollar Challenge. It's a chance to face off against Negreanu on FOX Sports and walk away with a million bucks. There's a catch, of course. If you qualify, you first have to submit your casting video. So, here ya go.

And be prepared for this line: "We call him Frenchy around here."

We suppose this would be a good time to point out Negreanu is not French. We suppose this would be a good opprotunity to remind everyone that while Negreanu is Canadian, he is not French Canadian.

That, of course, will not stop us from referring to Negreanu as "Frenchy" at least once a month for the foreseeable future.

Frenchy.

negreanu-frenchy.jpg

Alright. Now that we have that our of our system, we can move on to the other videos of the week, specifically how the PokerStars Sunday Million ended up in a six-way chop this weekend.

Check out the latest episode of the Online Poker Show below.

Watch Online Poker Show: Sunday Million - August 23rd, 2009 on PokerStars.tv

Finally, by this point you should be aware that PokerStars is sponsoring one of the newest ESPN projects, the Inside Deal. Each week, the show finds one or two of the big names in the poker world and gets inside their head for a bit. Not only that, it has the results from the big online tournaments and all the other news that's fit for the internet.

The latest episode just dropped. You can watch it below.

That's your Weekly Dose.

Frenchy.

Okay. We'll stop now.

Weekly Dose: Greenstein hits ESPN

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgHere at the PokerStars Blog, we try to teach the young ones that almost all things are okay in moderation. That is, it's fine to play poker on 24 tables, but don't do it for more than 12 hours at a time without going to the bathroom. Or, if you have to drink beer, make sure you limit it to no more than six pints per day (except Saturdays). Or, if you have to watch television, watch the stuff we feature here on the Pokerstars Blog.

That's why we're starting a new feature on these pages. We call it the Weekly Dose, a quick round-up of what's good on the small screen this week.

First up is one Mr. Barry Greenstein, cash pro, tournament genius, noted author, and all around nice guy. Greenstein hooked up with the boys from Bristol (and Laura Lane) for a sit-down on the third episode of ESPN's Inside Deal.

barry-greenstein-wcoop.jpg

As you know, Greenstein is not one of these people who sugarcoats his words to make everybody happy-happy. He tells it like it is and that's why he like him. In the episode below, you'll see Barry at his best, and also find out why everyone in Bristol is lining up to see him. Oh, and if you've never heard Greenstein say 'booyah,' this is your chance.

Once you're done there, you can stay up just a little past your bed time and watch the latest episode of the Online Poker Show. Once again, we have all the highlights and commentary from this weekend's Sunday Million.

You can check it out below.

Enjoy. And then get your hind end in bed!

2009 WCOOP: What’s it like to be a champion?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

wcoop2009-thumb.jpgA little more than a year ago, I sat here in front of my computer and watched a man win a sick amount of money in the biggest and richest ever online poker tournament. Had I had a little foresight, I could've hopped in my car and driven 90 minutes to watch him do it in person.

Carter King, better known as "ckingusc," pulled the last part of his screen name from the University of South Carolina. A Gamecock from Columbia, King became over two days the biggest thing in online poker.

carter-king.jpgCarter King sits for an interview with the PokerStars Video Blog team

Fore more on King, you cann look back at our 2008 WCOOP winner interview or see our 2008 WCOOP final table wrap-up.

Since that fateful day in September in 2008 we have had the time to track down King and get his thoughts on what it means to be a champion, what he's doing now, and how the win has affected his life.

You can watch the whole interview just by clicking on the video below.

In case you have been living in a cave or otherwise imprisoned for the past few weeks, you probably already know that the World Championship of Online Poker begins in less than a month and that big-value satellites are already underway.

The Online Poker Show (8-2-09)

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Client-News-Thumbnail-dottv.jpgAs our northern hemisphere summer begins winding through it's last miserably hot days, we've found quite a bit of comfort. ESPN is kicking out the jams with WSOP coverage, of course. And if that's not enough--and is it ever?--PokerStars.tv is doing its thing once again.

The Online Poker Show and Nick Wealthall are back with another fine episode. This week we're taking a look at a massive Sunday Million. Nearly 8,000 people signed up. One came out with more than $236,000.

See how it all happens by clicking the play button below.

That's service, folks.
