Estrellas Valencia in full swing

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Thumbnail image for estrellas_poker_tour.pngThe PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour is once again underway, this time in Valencia, where Casino Valencia plays host to the second event of the season. Yesterday's Day 1A of the €1,000 + €100 event saw 176 players at the felt, 81 of them having qualified online on PokerStars. After eight levels 84 remained, with Alvaro Marino Nadal, winner of the Tournament Leader board in 2010, and Daniel Rauta, the current leader of the Tournament Leader board, among those eliminated.

Through to tomorrow's Day 2, however, are Team PokerStars Pros Juan Manuel Pastor and Christophe De Meulder, and Team PokerStars Online Javier 'El_Cañonero' Domínguez.

Chip leader is Dutch qualifier Richard Van Schendel with 85,800 chips, followed by Frederic Van Der Mersch from Belgium with 84,900 and PokerStars qualifier Manuel Jimenez Cecilia with 80,900 chips.

Today's Day 1B will see Team PokerStars Pro Ana Marquez and Juan Miguel Tomé Perez (the winner of Estrellas Madrid) begin their tournaments. Friend of PokerStars Poli Rincón and Team PokerStars Online Polish player Grzegorz Mikielewicz will also be in attendance. But perhaps the most celebrated participant due to play today is one of the most famous sportsmen ever to emerge from Spain, golfer Sergio Garcia.

You can follow the action as it happens over on our sister Spanish PokerStars Blog (in Spanish, obviously).

Juan Miguel Tomé wins Estrellas Madrid

Monday, January 30th, 2012

ps_news_thn.jpgAfter five days of intense play and the shortest final table of the history of the Estrellas Poker Tour, the circuit now has its newest champion.

PokerStars qualifier Juan Miguel Tome defeated the almost invincible Luis Rufas to be crowned the first Estrellas Poker Tour winner of Season 3.

Tomé flew under the radar for most of the final table emerged at exactly the right time at the appropriate time to get heads up against Rufas. From there, it was all Tomé.

The first stop of Season 3 has been a great success. A total of 482 players showed up to build a prize pool worth €462,720. The tour now heads to Valencia March 28-April 1.

Congratulations once again to Juan Miguel Tome on a great performance in Madrid.

Rubén Velasco Merino leads, ESPT Madrid final set

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

estrellas_poker_tour.pngWhile those who like things fast have been lapping up the PokerStars Turbo Championship of Online Poker, a super-paced live event was taking place in Spain. In Day 3 of the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour Madrid, it took less than two hours to get rid of 30 players to ensure today's final table was set in double-quick time.

The 59 players returning to Casino Gran Madrid yesterday were already in the money after the bubble burst at the end of Day 2. But no-one quite expected the rush of bust-outs. Once the carnage was over, eight players remained, with Rubén Velasco Merino on top of the pile with 1,697,000 chips.

ESPT Madrid playing to €113,000 first prize

Friday, January 27th, 2012

estrellas_poker_tour.pngThere can be no doubting the continued success of the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour. Yesterday's Day 1B of the Madrid event, the first of Season 3, attracted another huge field of 263 players, 69 of whom qualified on PokerStars. At the end of the night, 118 of them had made it through to join Wednesday's survivors for today's Day 2.

With the first prize being announced as €113,350, and 59 players being paid, the current chip leader is Spanish player Juan Perez Benitocomo with 95,100 chips, followed Pedro Javier Piazuelo Ferrero, who has 89,400. Also still in the hunt is Team PokerStars Pro Ana Marquez with 47,200.

One player who should have been out made it through in unlikely circumstances. On a [jd][ks][8s] flop, Mures Jaime was all-in with [js][8c] but found himself up against a set of kings and a set of jacks. No problem for Mures, however, as the turn was [8d] and the river... [8h] to make him quads! He ended the night with 31,200.

Denis the menace leads ESPT Madrid

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

estrellas_poker_tour.pngCasino Gran Madrid is a familiar name to European poker players. It was here that last year's EPT Grand Final was held, and it will be a stop once more in EPT Season 8. This week, it is playing host to another PokerStars event: The Estrellas Poker Tour Madrid, the first stop of the tour's third season.

Such is the popularity of the ESPT that 220 players turned up to play yesterday's Day 1A, a bumper field that was whittled down to 110 by play's end, when the Russian Denis Vasiliev was on top with 90,000, a stack that could have been as high as 120,000 were it not for a last-minute hiccup. Ruben Velasco is right behind him with 87,500 chips.

Also through safely to Day 2 of this €1,000 + €100 tournament are Team PokerStars Pro Juan Manuel Pastor and Friend of PokerStars Poli Rincon, the former football star, both with around 40,000.

Estrellas Ibiza: Gosk defeats Spanish armada to claim the title and €92,100

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

estrellas_poker_tour.pngThe PokerStars.com Estrellas Ibiza main event came to a conclusion today and Grzegorz Gosk took down the title in about fours hours - and with it a trophy and a cheque for €92,100. The Polish PokerStars qualifier had a bookend of a tournament, in that he led the field at the end of Day 1 and he led the field when it mattered most; with one left.

On his victory he said: "This is the best time in my life. It's my sixth live poker tournament and this is my biggest win."

estrellas.ibiza-942_Grzegorz Gosk.jpg

Gosk polishes off opposition

He had to defeat the Season 2 TLB winner Alvaro Santamaria in a tense heads-up battle that saw the lead pass from one to the other. Very early on in heads-up play Gosk doubled up and took over the lead when his pocket jacks held against Gosk's ace-king. It was then the turn of the Spaniard to double back up with his favourite hand - [ah][qh] - to even things up. Ironically it was ace-queen that did it for Santamaria in the end. His ace-four was no match and he had to settle for second place a consolation prize of €58,600.

He said afterwards: "Gosk was a very good player and I knew it. He was not aggressive at all and it was impossible for me to pick up any tells."

Two class players embrace at the end

The start to today's final table at Casino Ibiza couldn't have been more different to the end of play yesterday. Then, it took nearly two hours to go from nine players to eight and set our final table; today we lost four players in just over an hour of play. The fact that play went on so long last night meant we were further along in the structure and the short stacks were under immediate pressure from the off.

Thumbnail image for final.table.estrellas.ibiza-881.jpg

When all eight had hopes of winning

The first player to fall was Alvaro Marino who pushed his short-stack in with [6d][2d] from the small blind only to run into Alavaro Marino's [as][th] in the big blind. There were a couple of quick double-ups before he was followed to the payout desk by Javier Tazon. His [ah][9h] couldn't stay ahead of Jeff Zsolt Soros' [js][ts].

The next two to fall were Raul Paez and Manuel Martinez. The remaining players would have been happy to see the back of the hugely talented Paez, who had his pocket kings cracked by Gosk's ace-jack. A few minutes later Martinez got his last 800,000 chips in bad, with [ad][7d] to Santamaria's [ac][qc].

trophy.estreallas.ibiza-901.jpg

Waiting for Gosk's mantlepiece

The very aggressive Jeff Zsolt Soros found it hard to get the better of Santamaria today and it was ironic that the first time he did, in a pre-flop showdown, his hand couldn't hold up. Carlos Simon Martinez was the happiest to see him go as he had blinded down to a micro stack and laddered to thousands more in winnings by waiting. He was eliminated when his ace-queen lost out to Santamaria's jack-four.

The Pokerstars staff, the tournament staff and Toby Stone ran a very well organised event that saw 400-player cap broken by 26. Apart from well-run tournaments, the players were treated to bus and walking tours as well as a number of parties at Ibiza's world famous super-clubs. There entertainment hasn't finished either. Tonight, from 11pm, at Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel, one of the island's most stunning resort hotels the Spanish Poker Awards take place. Oh, and there's another party afterwards.

Estrellas Ibiza: Final table, Level 25 cont. – 28 (blinds 30,000-60,000)

estrellas_poker_tour.png

7.25pm: Congratulations to Grzegorz Gosk. Estrellas Ibiza champion (€92,100)
Grzegorz Gosk has been crowned the last winner of this hugely successful Estrellas Poker Tour Season 2. He defeated a valiant opponent in Alvaro Santamaria.

The final hand played out with a 130,000 button raise from Santamaria before Gosk moved all-in. Santamaria called all-in for about 1,500,000 to create the last showdown of the tournament.

Gosk: [ac][4h]
Santamaria: [ad][qd]

The board ran [2d][7c][ks][2h][qh] to make the Pole two-pair.

There were a few isolated cheers as most of the crowd were on the Spaniard's side, naturally. Santamaria finished off an amazing season with a second place finish and a cheque for €58,600.

Grzegorz Gosk revels in his victorious moment

That's all for this season, we looking forward to seeing you again next season. A wrap of today's exciting play will be up for viewing soon.

7.15pm: More for Gosk
There were lots of little pots that on;y played out pre-flop or on the flop. This hand was the only hand that made to beyond a flop:

Grzegorz Gosk raised from the button and Alvaro Santamaria defended to see a [qh][4s][3d] flop where he check-called a 130,00 bet. Both players checked the [js] turn before Gosk had a 200,000 bet called on the [kd] river. Gosk showed a king and his opponent mucked.

6.55pm: Gosk reclaims the leads
Grzegorz Gosk raised and then emptied-the-clip on Alvaro Santamaria and got full value from his hand to reclaim the lead.

The Pole raised to 110,000 from the button and bet 85,000, 185,000 and 500,000 on each street. The final board read [8h][kd][ks][3d][3s] and Santamaria called all the way down before mucking when he was shown [jd][js] by Gosk.

Current standings:

Gosk - 5,000,000
Santamaria - 1,500,000

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 30,000-60,000

6.37pm: Santamaria finds his favourite hand to double
Alvaro Santamaria has won two massive pots in this tournament with the holding [ah][qh] and he's just done it again with the same hand. The last two times he flopped a flush but this time he had to wait to the river.

He raised to 110,00 from the button and Grzegorz Gosk peeled to see a [td][7h][3h] flop. Santamaria continued for 130,00 and Gosk check-called.

When the turn fell as [6c] Gosk led for 220,000 on only for the Spaniard to move all-in for his remaining 1,500,000. Call.

Santamaria: [ah][qh]
Gosk: [6s][3s]

The river came [9h] and the Spanish rail erupted in delight as there man retakes the lead with 3,400,000 to the Pole's 3,100,000.

heads.up.estrellas.ibiza-926.jpg

the heads-up battle continues

6.25pm: Lots of small pots
The players flying through hands in rapid fashion as they have a second dealer on hand to shuffle the deck.

Alvaro Santamaria has won more of these small pots than Grzegorz Gosk and has manged to claw back 200,000 chips, which only equates to four big blinds.

6.05pm: Third hand in and Gosk doubles
Play finally got back underway and in the third hand (first of this session) of their heads up battle they had a pre-flop all-in showdown.

Alvaro Santamaria raised to 110,000 and then did as massive four-bet all-in when Grzegorz Gosk three-bet to 250,000. Gosk wasted little time in calling all-in.

Gosk: [jd][jh]
Santamaria: [as][kc]

The board ran [8c][9c][2h][8d][8s] to make Gosk a full house. On the flop the Spanish announcer mistakenly said that Santamaria was in the lead. The Spaniard has been running so hot that he probably just assumed he'd hit!

5.44pm: Play paused
Play started and then paused again for some unkown reson. We'll try to get to the bottom of it. Below is a picture of the trophy the winner will receive.

trophy.estreallas.ibiza-901.jpg

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 25,000-50,000

5.25pm: Chips counts at head-up
Alvaro Santamaria -- 3,895,000
Grzegorz Gosk -- 2,375,000

5.10pm: Break time
There is 01.30 minutes of the level left so the players have been sent on a break now.

5.10: Carlos Simon Martinez eliminated in 3rd place €32,500
I can't quiet believe it but we're heads-up already after Carlos Simon Martinez was eliminated by that man Alvaro Santamaria.

Santamaria shoved into the big blind of Martinez with [js][4h] and he quickly called with [ad][qs].

The board ran [6c][5h][2d][4c][5d] to make two-pair for Santamaria.

Carlos.Simon.Martinez.estrellas.ibiza-918.jpg

Laddered to third place

The PokerStars qualifier will be happy with third as he had been nursing a very short stack for a while and he's laddered up the pay scale as players fell around him.

This is some of time record so far for an Estrelles event.

5.05pm: Jeff Zsolt Soros eliminated in 4th place (€25,500)
If Alvaro Santamaria can't use skill to get the better of Jeff Zsolt then the deck, that's been his friend all week, will come to the rescue.

Santamaria raised to 83,000 and then moved all-in when Zsolt three-bet to 210,000. Zsolt asked his opponent, "Is this a defensive all-in?"

Santamaria responded with, "Yes, but the cards are good as well."

This convinced Zsolt to risk his tournament with a call-in.

Sanatmaria: [td][9d]
Zsolt: [ac][8s]

The board ran [9s][qd][qs][9s][2d]. We are down to three players already!

Came in as the leader but fell in third place

4.45pm: Santamaria gets the better of Soros, again
Alvaro Santamaria seems to have Jeff Zsolt Soros worked out today and just took another pot of him with no made hand, just a high card.

The action folded to him in the small blind and he raised to 87,000. Soros doesn't like to give up his big blind and called to see the [ac][6h][as] flop. Santamaria continued for 80,000. Call.

The turn was [9c] and Santamaria check-called a 150,000 bet. The river fell as [3d] and it was checked to Soros who gave up and checked before showing queen-eight. Sanatmaria opened king-seven and took the pot.

4.25pm; Manuel Martinez eliminated in 5th place (€19,550)
With the exit of Manuel Martinez, we've lost half the field in about an hour of play.

He raised to 84,000 from the button and then moved all-in for 800,000 when Alvaro Santamaria three-bet to 205,000 from the small blind. Santamaria called quickly to create another showdown.

Martinez: [ad][7d]
Santamaria: [ac][qd]

The flop came [5h][8d][8c] and someone at the tabled shouted for the [qc] before someone on the rail asked for the [qs]. The person on the rail was in the know as the turn fell [qs], before the river was [7c].

Yet another player falls early

4.15pm: Chip counts for the final five
Grzegorz Gosk -- 1,950,000
Alvaro Santamaria -- 1,500,000
Jeff Zsolt Soros -- 1,300,000
Manuel Martinez -- 800,000
Carlos Simon Martinez -- 500,000

4.10pm: Raul Paez eliminated in 6th place (€15,800)
It didn't take long to lose another player and it was Raul Paez who had his kings cracked.

Carlos Simon Martinez raised before Grzegorz Gosk three-bet from the button. Paez was in the big blind and moved all-in for 456,000. Martinez folded but Gosk made the call.

Gosk: [ad][jh]
Paez: [kd][kc]

The board ran [9d][tc][7c][ac][4d]. Gosk hit his three-outer and moved into the chip lead with 1,950,000. Paez looked visibly gutted as he left the table.

Paez had high hopes for today

This is moving at some pace today!

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 20,000-40,000, 4,00 ante

4.05pm; Javier Tazon eliminated in 7th place (€12,650)
Jeff Zsolt Soros brushed off the defeat to Santamaria by busting Javier Tazon.

Soros raised to 61,000 from the button and called when Tazon moved all-in for less than 200,000 from the big blind.

Soros: [js][ts]
Tazon: [ah][9h]

The board ran [jh][3c][9s][6s][7c] to pair Soros' jack. Tazon was drawing really thin by the turn as his opponent picked up a flush draw to go with his pair.

Javier.Tazon.estrellas.ibiza-896.jpg

Another one bites the dust

3.55pm: Santamaria shows his class
Alvaro Santamaria had only lost chips so far today but he just played out a great hand to get back to near the top of the chip counts.

The action folded around to him the small blind and he raised to 65,000. Jeff Zsolt Soros called from the big blind to see a [ks][5d][2h] flop. Santamaria led for 55,000 and called when Soros raised to 131,000.

Both players checked the [qh] turn before Santamaria check-snap-called a 230,000 bet on the river with [ad][9s] for nine-high. His supporters on the rail cheered as Soros opened the losing [jc][6s]. More evidence of why he won the TLB.

3.40pm: Another short stack doubles
This time it was the turn of Polish player, Grzegorz Gosk and he was saved on the river too.

Jeff Zsolt Soros raised to 65,000 from the cut-off and called when Gosk three-bet all-in for 520,000 from the cut-off.

Gosk: [as][9s]
Zsolt: [4h][4c]

The board ran [5h][js][ks][3h][5s] to make him a flush.

3.30pm: Paez saved on the river
Raul Paez has got just what he needed: a double-up to put him back in the hunt.

The action folded to him on the button and he moved all-in for about 400,000 and was given a spin by Alvaro Santamaria in the small blind.

Paez: [ks][9s]
Santamaria: [ac][9c]

The board ran [4h][2c][jd][qd][kh].

Paez was halfway out of the door but the river came to his rescue.

3.20pm: Alvaro Marino eliminated in in 8th place (€10,050)
It took only two hand to lose our shortest stack Alavaro Marino. The action folded to him in the small blind and he moved all-in and was called by Carlos Simon Martinez in the big blind to create a shown down.

Marino: [6d][2d]
Martinez: [as][th]

The board ran [ts][3c][ad][jh][2d].

Marino hit a pair but unfortunately for him Martinez made two-pair. Marino left to a generous round of applause.

The final eight players

3pm: Let's get to know the players better with their profiles:

Manuel Martínez, 24, Valencia
Manuel, 24 years old, started playing live poker three years ago and is now a professional player. He dedicates his time to this sport and he prefers to play online for convenience and because it takes him less time. He does not like playing live because usually the action is slower, but he likes coming to live events for fun and to meet the other players. His favourite game is NLHE and he usually plays cash games. This is the second Estrellas tournament that Manuel plays, his first one was ESPT2 Alicante. This is the second final table for this young player, after winning a weekly $225 tournament in Valencia.

Raul Paez "El Toro", 34, Barcelona
Raul Paez "El Toro", is from Barcelona, but he is living in London. He started playing live poker 11 years ago and in 2004 began playing online. Now he is a professional poker player and is the second Spanish player with the most cashes in live tournaments. His favourite game is PL Omaha, but he also plays mixed games like HORSE, and NLHE tournaments. Raul finished 2nd at EPT8 Berlin side event for €29,600, 3rd at an EPT6 Barcelona side event for €11,900 and he finished twice in the cash at the 2011 WSOP in Vegas.

Alvaro Santamaría "Varosky", 21, Palencia, PokerStars player
This young IT student, originally from Palencia, started playing poker 2 years ago through a friend and now is a part time poker player. Alvaro prefers playing online because it is easier to earn money. Amongst the different poker styles, he prefers NLHE cash games. He is coach at PokerStrategy.com, the biggest Spanish speaking poker school. He is also the Estrellas Leaderboard winner. Alvaro finished 3rd at ESPT2 Alicante for €26,800, 11th at ESPT2 Madrid, 66th at the EPT Grand Final in Madrid for €20,000 and is the winner of the ESPT2 San Sebastian €200 NLHE side event.

Jeff Zsolt Soros, 43, Palma de Mallorca, PokerStars qualifier
Jeff was born in Hungary but moved to Mallorca in 1997. For many years he ran real estate and construction businesses and is also a stock market analyst. He turned to poker full-time a year ago and has played a ton of events since then, leaving the businesses in the care of his wife Agnes. He said: "I have played lots of live events since turning pro - 29 tourneys actually. It's practically burned my bank-roll (!) but I really wanted to come to Ibiza so I bought in direct. He said: "Playing poker was actually Plan C for me. Plan B was to import furniture from Thailand but that didn't really work because of the crisis - no one is buying properties, so they're certainly not buying furniture!" Jeff, the current chip leader, has had some pretty good results since turning pro, amassing more than $166,000 in live tournament winnings.

His best cash was fourth place in a €3k tournament in Barcelona for €66,000 last December. Just eight days later he went on to win the €1,200 Campeonato Espana De Poker event in Valladolid for €28,125. He also made the money at EPT7 Barcelona and cashed in the WSOP Main Event in 2010 for $36,463. He said: "Winning Estrellas Ibiza would be my best cash ever but there are some really strong players in this final - not only three of the best online players but also Raul Paez who is one of the best live players."

Alvaro Marino Nadal "Drácula", 32, Madrid, Estrellas TLB winner
Alvaro Marino, known as "Dracula" at the poker tables, has been playing poker for the last five years and decided to leave his profession in social services to dedicate his time completely to his passion. "Dracula" usually plays live cash games and he is the Season 1 Estrellas Leaderboard winner. He reached a final table in Vegas. And he also has reached several final tables at the Estrellas circuit: in 2010 he won the ESPT1 Malaga leg, finished in 3rd position at the ESPT2 Alicante €150 NLHE turbo and 6th at the ESPT2 Madrid for €10,100.

Carlos "carsimmar" Simon, 20, Herce, Rioja, Spain, PokerStars qualifier
Student Carlos Simon is playing his first ever live event at Estrellas Ibiza after winning his seat on PokerStars. Carlos took up poker playing with friends a few years ago but quickly graduated to playing online. Around a month ago, he was runner-up - out of a 3,700-strong field - in a $2.20 event for $1,600. Soon after, he had another final table - finishing fourth in a $55 tourney on PokerStars for $3,200.

This gave the 20-year-old mechanical engineering student the confidence to try qualifying for an Estrellas event. He said: "I was thrilled win my trip to Ibiza and I can't believe I am now on the final table. I'm fourth in chips but today will be very hard. It's a very difficult table." Carlos, who comes from Herce, a tiny village with only 400 inhabitants in the Rioja region, is being supported here in Ibiza by his friend Ramon. He said: "I've been really lucky. My friends and family are really behind me, including my brother Alberto and girlfriend Claudia."

Javier Tazón "MuckeDBoY", 28, Santander
Javier Tazón, better known at the poker tables as "MuckeDBoY", is originally from Santander and started playing online poker in 2005 with some friends. Tazon has played more than 6 million hands on PokerStars and now is a professional poker player. Javier is a PokerStrategy.com coach and prefers playing online because he can play more hands, multitable (he plays up to 24 tables at the same time) and he does not need to travel. He likes to attend live tournaments for fun and to socialize with the other players. Amongst Javier's favourite games are NLH 2 $/4 $ and 25 $/50, cash games and NL tournaments up to $5,000.

Javier finished 157th at the 2011 PCA and cashed $17,500, he finished 377th at the 2010 WSOP in Las Vegas for $36,463.

Grzegorz Gosk, 20, Olsztyn, Poland
This 20-year-old IT Student started playing poker online 3 years ago. Although he is not a poker pro, he plays regularly. His favourite game is NLHE and he likes playing both, online and live poker. The most important for his is the balance between both. He likes playing live poker since he can see his opponents, and enjoys the online play since he can play more hands and control the stats while playing.

This is the second Estrellas tournament that Gosk is playing after participating at ESPT2 San Sebastian. This is the first time that Grzegorz reaches a final table and he said that it is going to be a tough table. This year he run deep at the European Masters of Poker in Bulgaria. He also won a $3 rebuy tournament at PokerStars, where he won $700.

2.50pm: Estrellas Ibiza final table
This is what we have been working towards all week. The PokerStars, com Estrellas Ibiza has reached our final table of eight.

Play went on longer than expected last night so we are further along in the structure. The average stack is around 23 big blinds deep and the top two stacks have twice the average. This will put a lot of pressure on out shorter stacks so we expect a lot of action right from the off.

Seat 2. Raul Paez - 442,000 chips

Estrellas Ibiza: Soros soars as Pastor bubbles final table

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

estrellas_poker_tour.pngAn action-packed start to the day awaited us today when we returned a little bleary eyed after the awesome PokerStars party at Privilege last night. The players found renewed energy and aggression and players busted in rapid fashion in the early levels of the day. From there it was a mixed bag as there were long periods where nothing much happened followed by a splurge of eliminations that would see several players busting within a short period of time.

Alvaro Santamaria secured the Estrellas Season 2 TLB title during play today and went on to celebrate by scooping enough chips to leave himself in second position coming into tomorrow's final. It just goes to show that the cream can rise to the top within a great structured tournament. He only lost the chip-lead to Jeff Zsolt Soros in the very last hand of the day. He bagged up 1,710,000 chips after showing the same relentless aggression he shown throughout the tournament.

Santamaria&Soros.estrelles.ibiza-877.jpg

Santamaria (left) & Soros are the men to catch tomorrow

He leads a final table that looks like:

Seat 1. Manuel Martinez - 777,000 chips
Seat 2. Raul Paez - 442,000 chips
Seat 2. Alvaro Santamaria - 1,533,000 chips
Seat 4. Jeff Zsolt Soros - 1,710,000 chips
Seat 5. Alvaro Marino - 220,000 chips
Seat 6. Carlos Simon Martinez - 727,000 chips
Seat 7. Javier Tazon - 346,000 chips
Seat 8. Grzegorz Gosk - 528,000 chips

JMPastor.estrellas.ibiza-875.jpg

Pastor collecting his €7,450

The most prolonged period, as it so often is, was when the remaining players convened on to one table of nine. No player wants to bubble the final table and this results in players tightening all their ranges and making folds when they might make calls or raises under normal conditions. The status quo that existed couldn't and did last forever. The unfortunate player who will have to painfully watch from the rail tomorrow is Team PokerStars Pro Juan Manuel Pastor who busted after nearly two hours of nine-handed play.

FTbubble.handibiza-879.jpg

Final table bubble hand

He was playing a short-stack for the whole day and had to rely on double or triple-ups to stay alive. That takes its toll on the mind and he will be very tired now after getting so close to making his first final table at an Estrellas Event. His final hand saw him push with pocket sixes and lose a race to Soros, who held ace-ten.

Play begins an hour earlier tomorrow, at 3pm, in the hope that a winner will be crowned before the end of season award ceremony that is scheduled to start at 11pm. Until then it's goodnight from Casino Ibiza.

The final nine

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 15,000 -30,000, 3,000 ante

1.44am: Break down
The players have gone on a ten-minute break. Let's hope they come back with some renewed vigour and gamble.

1.35am: Post flop action!
Sorry to get your hopes up with that title as the post flop action in this hand was as passive as can be.

The action folded to Raul Paez in the small blind and he completed, with Alvaro Santamaria checking behind. The two went on to check the [3c][kd][qs][qh][js] board all the way down. Santamaria tabled king-four and took the pot as his opponent folded.

1.25am: Payouts reminder
Seeing as there's not going on at the table, here's a reminder of the last few exits and how much they got paid. The full list can be found on the prize pool and payouts page.

10th. David Miguel Canvajal, Spain, €4,850
11th. Emilio Dominguez, Spain, €4,850
12th. Zoltan Szabo, Hungary, €4,850
13th. Juan Carlos Sanchez, Spain, €4,100
14th. Anna Sanchez, Spain, €4,100
15th. Julien Bottollier Depois, France, PokerStars qualifier, €4,100

1.10am: Pastor all-in
Grzegorz Gosk opened to 51,000 before Juan Manuel Pastor moved all-on. The decision was back on the Pole and he did the obligatory tank-fold. And so it goes on.

1am: Little to report
The last 20 minutes has seen a lot of raises but no takers. The players are procrastinating over most decisions and that is understandable as no of them want to make a mistake to bust at this juncture.

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 12,000-24,000, 3,000

12.40am: Another short stack double
This time it was Team PokerStars Pro Juan Manuel Pastor. He pushed for a little less than 200,000 from the small blind and was called by Raul Paez in the big blind.

Pastor: [2h][2c]
Paez: [ks][jd]

The board ran [6d][2s][jh][th][as]. Paez flopped top pair but it was no match for Pastor's flopped set.

12.30am: How did he find that hand?
Grzegorz Gosk has doubled-up to around 600,000 when he woke up with queens in the big blind.

The action folded to Javier Tazon in the small blind and he shoved with [as][3c]. Gosk snap called with [qs][qh] and the board ran ten-high.

12.15am: Final nine seat draw
This is how the final nine have been drawn on to one table. They will stay in these seats tomorrow, minus the player who busts next.

12.05am: David Miguel Canvajal eliminated in 10th place (€4,850)
Manuel Martinez has doubled-up through David Miguel Canvajal, leaving the latter with less than five big blinds.

Martinez raised to 40,000 and Canvajal peeled from the big blind to see a [8h][kd][4c] flop. Martinez c-bet for 40,000 and Canvajal check-called.

The turn fell as [9c] and Martinez bet 41,000 again but this time he was check-raised all-in. He called all-in for his remaining 300,000.

Martinez: [kh][jh]
Canvajal: [jc][8s]

The river came [qs] to see the best hand hold.

David.Miguel.Canvajal.estrellasibiza-789.jpg

So close to the final table

A few hands later Martinez shoved his micro stack over the line with [qh][qs] and Canvajal (again) called from the big blind with [ah][7s] and spiked an ace on the flop.

11.57pm: Pastor's situation goes from bad to worse
Juan Manuel Pastor came back for this level with 15 big blinds but now he has less. He raised to 51,000 but folded when Jeff Zsolt Soros three-bet to 130,000. He's down to about 245,000 now.

There had to be a countdown when Emilio Dominguez and Javier Tazon tangled in a huge pre-flop showdown.

Tazon made it 34,000 to go from first position and then moved all-in for 487,000 when Dominguez three-bet to 90,000. Dominguez called all-in for 470,000 and off to the races they went.

Miguel raised and called when the Hungarian shoved from the button.

Miguel: [ac][qs]
Szabo: [js][qd]

The board ran [jd][5c][as][8s][ts]. Miguel thought his luck was in when the jack was the first card to appear but the ace was hiding just underneath.

Zoltan.Szabo.estrellas.ibiza-790.jpg

Someone messed with the Zoltan

10.40pm: Never count this man out
Juan Manuel Pastor has doubled once more. He shoved for 146,000 from the cut-off with [8h][8d] and Emilio Dominguez called in the big blind with [ah][qh] and the board ran [js][7h][3d][8c][9s] to make him a set.

10.35pm: Pastor triples
Juan Manuel Pastor had blinded down to 54,000 when he found a spot to get his chips in.

Raul Paez raised to 26,000 before the Team PokerStars Pro shoved from the button. Jeff Zsolt Soros was in the big blind and called, as did Paez. The two then checked the [ks][2s][kh][9c][qd] board all the way down.

Pastor: [as][9h]
Paez: [5s][6s]
Soros: [ad][4d]

Pastor scooped the lot to move up to a ten big blind stack. He still has a lot of work to do.

10.20pm: Juan Carlos Sanchez eliminated in 13th place (€4,100)
Alvaro Santamaria flopped a flush with [ah][qh] for the second time today to eliminate Juan Carlos Sanchez and extend his lead at the top with more than a million chips. Sanchez was unlucky as he held [ac][ks] and all the chips went in pre-flop. He was sorry to see the flop fall [th][9h][4h].

10.10pm: Anna Sanchez eliminated in 14th place (€4,100)
The last lady in the field, Anna Sanchez has been eliminated by Jeff Zsolt Soros. A player raised to 25,000 from under-the-gun before Soros three-bet to 55,000. Sanchez then put in a cold four-bet to 200,000 and called all-in when Soros pushed. The third party folded in between.

One more 15-minute break.

9.13pm: Torres shown the red card
Salvador Torres had shoved over the top of Emilio Dominguez three times in the last couple of orbits but when he tried it for the fourth time he was called and unluckily eliminated.

Dominquez raised from the button and called when Torres shoved for around 130,000 from the small blind.

Torres: [as][qh]
Dominquez: [ac][jh]

The board ran [3s][2s][js][7h][2c]. Torres was all smiles when he won hands throughout the tournament and he still manged a smile in defeat. The main event is a two table affair now as just 16 players remain.

9.10pm: Paez flush with chips
Raul Paez, who's been slipping under our radar so far today, is up to 750,000 after flopping a flush.

estrellas.ibiza-699_raul_paez.jpg

Paez got paid

He defended his big blind after Jeff Zsolt Soros min raised from the button. The flop was [4c][tc][6c] and Paez check-raised up to 29,500 after Soros c-bet small (10,500). The turn came [ks] and Paez led for 48,000. Tank call. The river was [7h] and Soros called a 120,000 bet but mucked upon seeing Paez's [7c][8c]. He dropped to 600,000 chips.

8.50pm: Szabo's aces cracked
Zoltan Szabo played aces slow and sweet but had them cracked by Juan Carlos Sanchez.

Neil Raine opened from under-the-gun and the Hungarian just flat called before Sanchez shoved for 130,000 from the big blind. The Brit folded but Szabo snap called.

Szabo: [ac][ad]
Sanchez: [kd][qc]

The board ran [kh][2d][2c][kc][3c] to make the Spaniard a full house.

8.33pm: Gosk hungry for Soros' chips
Jeff Zsolt Soros fired two barrels at former chip leader Grzegorz Gosk but the Pole was waiting with two-pair and picked him off.

Gosk raised from the button and Soros peeled before both checked the [qc][th][qd] flop. The turn came [3h] and Soros led for 27,000. Call. The final card fell as [6s] as Gosk snap called Soros' 57,000 bet and tabled [tc][3s]. Soros said, "Nice hand" and mucked.

Gosk gunning for chips

8.20pm: Pastor gets one through
Juan Mauel Pastor managed to maneuver Alavaro Santiago off top pair with an all-in push. The latter raised from under-the-gun and the Team PokerStars Pro defended to see a [td][5c][6s] flop. Both players checked before Pastor check-raised his opponent's 21,000 turn bet up to 200,000 when the [ac] fell. Santiago tapped the table and showed [ah] as he folded.

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 5,000-10,000, 500 ante

8pm: TLB winner has been decided
This last event of the Estrellas Poker Tour was special for two players. Alvaro Santamaria and Jose Javier Patino had hopes to overtake Fabian Deimann's lead on the Estrellas TLB. Why? Simple, because there was a huge first prize for the winner: a sponsorship to play the whole 3rd season of the Estrellas Poker Tour. Today, when we arrived at the Casino Ibiza, Patino and Santamaria were only ones with options, and with chips, the latter being on the top after winning the High Roller event a few days ago and Deimann busted during day one of the Main Event.

Freerolling in Season 3

The goal was difficult for Patino, as he needed a 5th place or better in the Main Event to claim the TLB prize. That was not going to happen as his three-bet all-in with eights from the big blind went wrong as the button, and initial raiser, was waiting for him with kings. On the other side, Santamaria experienced a great momentum during these first levels of the afternoon and he's running very good. Oh! And now he's also the mathematical champion of the TLB, so we will see him on every single Estrellas event next season. Congrats, Alvaro.

Thanks to Ivan, our Spanish blogger, for bringing us this information.

Bastian Frederic Fischer was eliminated in 21st when his badly timed push with eight-nine ran into the pocket kings of Carlos Simon, who's running hot today.

Manuel Jimenez went in 20th when he was flopped dead by Alvaro Santamaria. He pushed with [jc][tc] and Santamaria called with [ah][qh] and flopped a flush.

7pm: Break it up
The remaining 23 players are on another 15-minute break. Make that 22 players as Juan Carlos Sanchez's stack has just been pushed over to Carlos Simon.

6.55pm: Aspas out of gas
Alvaro Aspas is the latest faller. He raised from the cut-off and then four-bet all-in when Grzegorz Gosk three-bet from the big blind. The Pole called to create a showdown.

Aspas: [ah][td]
Gosk: [ac][kc]

The board ran [7d][7c][8c][2s][ac] meaning Gosk's king kicker still played.

6.30pm: Santamaria gets what he wants on the flop
When you defend your big blind with [8d][7s], you're pretty happy to see a [8s][7s][jc] flop fall. Alvaro Santamaria did just that when Dimitrios Mertzanis raised. He then went on to check-raise the Greek all-in, who called with pocket queens. The board ran out [3h][9s] and Santamaria is up to 440,000 chips.

6.10pm: More for Pastor
Juan Mauel Pastor is on a roll today and has managed to find another double-up. The Team PokerStars Pro three-bet all-in for 91,000 with [qs][qh] after Jose Manuel Domingo had raised to 11,000 with [as]qd]. Domingo called but another queen fell on the flop to make it safe for Pastor.

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 3,000-6,000, 500 ante

6pm: One time chip fails for Jarczynski
A 400,000-chip pot played out on table six that saw the elimination Johan Lendenius and the crippling of Robert Jarczynski.

estrellas.ibiza-722_carlos_simon_martinez.jpg

Carlos Simon

Lendenius was very short and in the big blind and he called all-in when it was on him. Before that, a pre-flop raising war occurred between Jarczynski (UTG) and Carlos Simon (SB). Before we knew it, all three players' cards were on their backs.

Jarczynski: [ah][kh]
Simon: [as][as]
Lendenius: [6c][5s]

The board ran [th][qh][5c][4d][ks].

Jarczynski was frantically calling, "One time", but it failed to work for him. He must've used his chips ealier in the tournament. He was left with 8,500 and followed Lendenius out of the door soon after. Martinez is up to more than 400,000 chips.

5.42pm: Some payouts for you
42nd. Viktor Celikovsky, Czech Republic, PokerStars qualifier, €1,675
43rd. Jose Maria Solis Marcos, Spain, €1,675
44th. Eric Palleja Ortiz, Spain, €1,675
45th. Sergi Mateo Larraz, Spain, PokerStars qualifier, €1,675
46th. Muca Ruschan, France, €1,490
47th. Carlos Calahorra Fernandez, Spain, PokerStars player, €,1,490
48th. Alejo Briones Sigales, Spain, €1,490
49th. Miguel Angel Lopez Diaz, Spain, PokerStars qualifier €1,490
50th. Barend Simon De Jong, Netherlands, PokerStars qualifier, €1,490

5.35pm: Ortega busts as De Jong nearly triples
A three-way hand played out that almost saw a double elimination but ended with Barend Simon De Jong getting lucky to virtually triple-up.

The hand started with an open shove from Luis Ortega for 84,000 and a flat call from the Dutchman. Alvaro Santamaria was sat behind and re-shoved. De Jong only had another 8,000 back and made the automatic call.

Ortega: [7c][8d]
De Jong: [ad][jd]
Santamaria: [jc][jh]

The board ran [4s][ac][tc][qh][3s].

De Jong banged his fist on the table and shouted, "VAMOS. I'm learning Spanish!" before raking in the pot.

5.21pm: Chips updated
All the chip counts were updated during the break. Click here for the full list. Here are your top five:

Name Country Chips
Manuel Martinez Spain 450,000
Raul Paez Corral Spain 310,000
Alvaro Santamaria Velasco Spain 300,000
Javier Ventura Zamudio Spain 270,000
Adrian Cardona Spain 220,000

5.17pm: Final 50 in the side event
The €300 side event is in to day 2. We mention this because Dan Edler is chip leader. He, like us, is amazed to even have more than his starting stack. A few too many Jagger-bombs last night mean his head is not in the best place to maintain that lead. Best of luck to him though from the PokerStars blog.

5.10pm: Solis busts in blind battle
Jose Maria Solis is the first player out after the break. He moved all-in for about 65,000 after Julien Bottollier Depois had raised from the small blind. Call.

Solis: [ad][3d]
Depois: [ac][jc]

The board ran [qs][kh][5h][qh][7d] and Solis shook a few hands and made his exit.

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 2,500-5,000

4.45pm: Break time
There is a 15-minute break while the black 100 denomination chips after taken out of play.

4.43pm: Pastor making his move
Juan Manuel Pastor had been chipping up hand-after-hand when no one found a hand to call his shoves with. He managed to double his stack this way before he doubled for real when he finally found a caller.

He shoved with [8d][8h] and Viktor Celikovsky called him with [ac][qd]. The board ran ten-high and the Team PokerStars Pro is up to 90,000 chips now.

JMpastor.estrellas.ibiza-703.jpg

What shall I do with my new found wealth?

4.42pm: Palleja's luck ran out
Eric Palleja has been all-in several times today and had managed to survive, but his luck just ran out. He got it all-in pre-flop with [kc][jc] and was looked up by Daniel Ranta. The board ran [jh][6c][6d][qs][3d] to pair the Romanian's queen.

4.37pm: Dominating aces no good here
It seems that having the better ace than your opponent is not good for one's health at the moment.

First up, Alvaro Santamaria raise-shoved over the top of Victor Manuel's three-bet with [ah][qc]. Manuel called with [ac][kh]. Santamaria said a queen was coming before the board ran out [7c][qs][7d][8d][qh] to make him a full house. That was a bit greedy! He's up to 330,000 now whereas Manuel is down to 85,000.

A few seconds later we heard that Sergi Mateo shoved from under-the-gun with ace-jack and was called by Joao Silva in the big blind with ace-nine. Mateo was soon shaking hands and wishing everyone the best.

4.20pm: Briones busto
Rael Paez just eliminated Alejo Briones but he had to work hard to get it heads-up in a three-way pot.

Briones only had about 20,000 and he was in the big blind. Paez raised from second position and Roman Igorevich Dolgorukov called from the big blind before Briones committed the last of his chips.

Paez checked the [5d][3d][3c] flop to face a 23,000 bet from the Russian. Paez pondered for a minute and raised it up to 48,000 to force a fold.

Paez: [tc][ts]
Briones: [as][4s]

The board ran out [5s][jc].

Just before this hand Miguel Angel Lopez was also eliminated.

4.05pm: Cards are in the air
There are 40 minutes remaining of level 16 to complete.

As I write this Barend Simon De Jong was getting himself eliminated in front of us, so 49 players remain.

Welcome back to Day 3 of the PokerStars.com Estrelles Ibiza. We're all a little tired today after an amazing VIP night at Privilege.
