EPT Moscow becomes EPT Kiev

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

ept-thumb-promo.jpgWell, we had our bags packed for an August in Moscow, but we're happy to go elsewhere. As you might have heard, the Russian government has recently closed most of its casinos. That was going to make it really difficult to host the first Season 6 EPT event there.

Always quick on their feet, the people behind the EPT have done some quick work (and I mean, really, really quick work) and have put together a tournament at the exact same time, for the exact same buy-in, and not too terribly far away from Moscow.

The first stop of this season of the European Poker Tour will now be held August 18-23 at the Kiev Sports Palace in Kiev, Ukraine. The "EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship" is to be held under the regulation and authority of the Ukrainian Ministry of Youth, Family and Sport, and in partnership with the Ukrainian Poker Federation. This event is expected to be the largest poker tournament ever held in the Ukraine.

PokerStars is doing all it can to accommodate its players who qualified for the Russian event. Qualifiers can now use their Moscow entry to play in Kiev or to go toward another EPT buy-in. Qualifiers can also exchange their Moscow entry for cash.

For more on the Ukraine event and to read the official statement on the alternate location, visit, EPT.com.

European Poker Tour Season 6 full of surprises

Monday, June 15th, 2009

ept-thumb-promo.jpgThe European Poker Tour is rarely without a surprise or two. From one year to the next, the new schedule almost always contains some sort of happy revelation. This year, the entire schedule is a surprise, and it's spectacular by just about any definition.

We have just seen a document that contains some of the most interesting and we dare say awesome possibilities for any poker tour anywhere. The sad part? We can't tell you about the whole thing yet. Sorry, but what with confidentiality agreements being what they are and all, we're sort of stuck.

We hate to tease, however, and, as it happens, PokerStars has decided to release the first half of the schedule. Good thing, too, because we probably couldn't have kept the first stop secret for very long.

For the first time ever, The European Poker Tour is going to Russia.

We've just learned the EPT will host its first stop in Moscow, Russia August 17-23. The $6,900 tournament (that's 212,000 rubles to be you and me) will be the first time the EPT has crossed into Russia and is sure to be an historic event. If you're as excited as we are, then you'll likely be interested to know satellites start later today (Monday) on PokerStars. Check them out under the EVENTS/EPT tabs.

This will be the first time in the EPT's history that it is not kicking off its season in Barcelona. Though we can't confirm this with our sources, we're guessing the early move to Moscow has something to do with that whole "not fighting a winter war in Russia" thing. Fear not, however, as the EPT is picking right back up in Barcelona September 4-7 with a €8,000+300 ($11,590) tournament.

That brings us to the next big surprise. Once again, for the first time ever, EPT London will be moving away from the Vic. Due in large part to the ever-growing crowds at the London event, the EPT is moving the event down the street to the Hilton Metropole, a place that can easily hold 1,000 players. Early word is that this year's EPT London is going to be a pretty significant festival. Stay tuned for more details on the October 1-7 tournament(s).

After that, it's back to Warsaw Poland for the October 20-25 event. That event contains no real surprises, but you only have to wait until the next month before getting a brand new EPT tournament.

For the first time in its history, the European Poker Tour is going to Portugal. Players will be sitting down at Casino Vilamoura November 17-22 for a €5,000+300 ($7,400 USD) tournament.

The next two tournaments will be a comfort to those of you looking for some constancy in life. EPT Season 6 is headed back to Prague December 1-6 and then, thank all that's holy, to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure right after the first of the year for what we're promised will be a huge festival of poker.

Last year's PokerStars EPT season proved a massive success and overtook the World Poker Tour in both number of players and total prize pools. EPT Season 5 generated a total prize pool of nearly €55 million (approximately $77 million) with 7,980 players from 97 countries. The four richest prize pools available in poker tournaments outside the United States last year occurred during EPT5, at: the PCA ($12.7 million); Monte Carlo ($12.3 milliion); San Remo ($7.5 million); and Barcelona ($7 million).

Now it's time to move onto Season 6 and EPT creator John Duthie couldn't be more pleased with how things are looking so far.

"We have set very high standards and we aim to improve on this still further in Season 6 - with new additions to the schedule as well as a richer mix of games and buy-ins to cater for more players," he said.

Be sure to stay tuned for the second half of the schedule. If even half of what we've seen holds true, Season 6 could change the way we look at the EPT.

In the meantime, we'll leave you with this...you ain't seen nothing yet.

2009 PCA: From the Caribbean to the Mediterranean

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

by Alex Villegas

The EPT has grown like a pleasurable virus throughout Europe. Its infected places such as Prague, Dortmund and Deauville with poker players and hefty buy-ins. It's grown strong enough to make its way across the Atlantic to an island by the name of Paradise.

The PCA is, for many players, their first EPT event and they're enjoying it. Several of them don't want their EPT experience to end and are willing to follow it back across the Atlantic to it's ultimate stop--the $15,000 buy-in grand final in Monte Carlo. PokerStars never misses an opportunity to help players on their way. Twenty feet from the PCA main event, twenty players are battling for one seat at the Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

PCA09_10K_IJ2_4600.jpg

PokerStars held a $1,100 rebuy satellite that attracted 20 players and 14 rebuys, good enough for one package valued at $18,800 and a second place cash prize of $14,665. PokerStars has offered to add a few bucks to second place to give the player a seat in the Grand Final.

There is no one way to determine a year's worth, but if a person can put a Caribbean and Mediterranean stamp in their passport, it's going to be a good 2009 by any measure.

EPT: Deauville back on the calendar

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The last time this humble blog reported on an event from Deauville, France was February 12, 2006. The lady of the the French Coast was one of the players' (and, frankly our) favorite places to stop on the European Poker Tour. Since then, due to uncontrollable circumstances and the vagaries of the poker world, Deauville has remained only a pleasant memory. Absence has made the heart grow, if not fonder, at least a little misty for the old haunt on France's northern shore.

Enter the ever-likable John Duthie.

Duthie, creator and chief executive of the European Poker Tour, has announced that the EPT Deauville event is back on on the calendar for the coming year. The Season Five French Open will run at Casino Barriere de Deauville on January 20-24, 2009.

The luxurious town of Deauville will once again attract hundreds of poker players who will sit down to play in the charming Casino Barriere Deauville including all four of the Team PokerStars Pro ladies; Vanessa Rousso, Vicky Coren, Isabelle Mercier and Katja Thater. As well as the ever successful ElkY, Noah Boeken, Alex Kravchenko, Luca Pagano, Dario Minieri and Chad Brown.

PokerStars players, as always, can win their tickets to EPT Deauville on PokerStars.com. Satellites are running daily and platers can win a package worth more than $9,000 which includes buy-in to the tournament, hotel accommodation and expenses. Players can buy directly into the main event for €5,300. The event is capped at 700 players and is looking an estimated prize pool of €3,360,000.

We'll see everybody in Deauville.

EPT eyes Hungary for new stop

Monday, September 1st, 2008

The PokerStars European Poker Tour couldn't let its fifth season go by without adding a brand new stop on Europe's biggest poker series.

The EPT announced today that it will host Hungary's first-ever live poker tournament October 28-November 1 in Budapest. After finding quite a bit of interest and success in recent EPT launches in Prague and Warsaw, the EPT's €4,350 four-day No Limit Hold’em Hungarian Open will almost certainly draw hordes of players from all over the world.

Lest you not recognize Hungary's role in world poker, Hungary's Denes Kalo was runner-up twice in last season’s EPTs – at EPT Baden and the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. He's pocketed more than €1.5 million in EPT winnings.

Fellow Hungarian Valdemar Kwaysser is not content to let Kalo be his country's only big poker star. Kwaysser won the first PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour event in San José, Costa Rica for $274,103.

Satellites for the EPT Hungarian Open are running on PokerStars now. For more information on the event, visit the Hungarian Open homepage on EPT.com

PokerStars EPT seeks high-rollers

Friday, August 1st, 2008
ept-thumb-promo.jpgThe European Poker Tour has long been home to high-rollers. The Grand Final buy-in of the tournament series is impressive in itself at €10,000. The rest of the events are nearly as big. However, we always knew there were people in the room who wanted to play bigger. After the tournament was over for the day, the big players would start up big-money sit & go tournaments. If that wasn't enough, the true high rollers would retire to a hotel suite and play private games for more money than most people can imagine.

Now the European Poker Tour has given these high-rollers a tournament of their own.

When the Season 5 EPT London event kicks off in a few months, event organizers will not only host the scheduled EPT London event. They have also just announced a brand new £20,000 + £300 PokerStars EPT £1 Million Showdown, with a guaranteed £1,000,000 prize pool. If that doesn't attract the big action players, not much will.

That's not all. The London EPT event is getting a shot in the arm and the winner of the event is going to be pretty happy about it.

PokerStars is adding an extra £250,000 to the prize pool of this October’s EPT London event, making for a guaranteed £1,000,000 for the winner.

Look out for EPT London satellites starting at PokerStars on August 4, and satellites for the £1M Showdown starting August 18.

For more information on how you can qualify, visit the PokerStars EPT satellites page.
