APPT Manila: Final Table Update, Round 25

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

It's often said that to win a major poker tournament, it is often said that you require skill and luck. To win the 2008 APPT Manilla tournament, you also need a heathy dose of endurance. It's now almost 4am local time, with the final table players battling for almost 15 hours. Both heads up players are aware of the stakes on offer - over 7million pesos.

There is very little betting on the flop, with players seeking to gain a better grasp of the hand on the turn. This is slowly becoming an arm wrestle of epic proportions as the two players continue to slug it out, hand after hand, pot after pot.

APPT Manila: Crisis, what crisis?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Unless you’ve recently returned from a trip to Mars, you’ll be aware that the world is going through a bit of a financial “correction” at the moment. But the global cash crunch doesn’t appear to have had much of an impact on the size of the field for the PokerStars.net APPT Manila main event.

Predictions of a starting field of around 100 on day 1A have been laughed off, with the ballroom here at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino filled to a near capacity of 149. It’s an early call, but there seems a strong likelihood that last year’s figure of 255 will be smashed.

Players have just been welcomed by APPT president Jeffrey Haas and co-founder of the Filipino Poker Tour Franco Mabanta, while a dramatic performance from Ati-Atihan has ensured all evil spirits (and bad beat stories) have been cleared from the tournament room.

Not surprisingly, today’s starting list is dominated by Filipino players, including PokerStars Sponsored locals Sunshine Samson, Wally “The Dream” Sombrero, Derick Hernandez and Ronald Singson.

We’ve also spotted PokerStars Sponsored player Bryan Huang, who is seeking an unprecedented fourth successive APPT cash. Bryan is also excitedly awaiting tomorrow’s APPT debut of his father Jack, who qualified for this event on PokerStars. Interestingly, Bryan is seated next to his good friend Josh Ang Pang Leng, who tops the list of Singaporean tournament poker money winners. Korean poker legend and PokerStars Sponsored player Jimmy Cha is seated nearby.

Other notables in action today include the always-entertaining David Saab, fellow Aussies Michael Chrisanthopoulos (third in the 2008 Aussie Millions), James Broom (the reigning Melbourne champion), Dave Lee (fresh from his PokerNews Cup final table) and APPT Macau High Roller runner-up Andrew Scott.

We’re also thrilled to see 1991 WSOP main event Brad Daugherty in the room, along with the ever-popular Isaac Galazan, the winner of the 2005 WSOP $2500 NLHE short-handed bracelet. Reigning APPT Seoul champion Yoshihiro Tasaka of Japan and Bali-based American Carter Gill (with two cashes on both the APPT and LAPT to his name in the past 12 months) are also playing today.

Play will continue for nine one-hour levels today, with a dinner break scheduled after level seven.

Level 1: 25/50
Level 2: 50/100
Level 3: 100/200
Level 4: 100/200 (25 ante)
Level 5: 150/300 (25 ante)

The red carpet has been given a steam-clean in readiness for today’s opening session in the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour Manila main event after receiving a torrid workout yesterday.

Scores of local and international media descended on the Hyatt Hotel and Casino yesterday for the official launch, hosted by APPT president Jeffrey Haas, Filipino Poker Tour executive producer Alan Escano, Team PokerStars Pro Lee “Final Table” Nelson and representatives of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The APPT is headline news in all of today’s daily papers and featured prominently on last night’s evening news: prime time poker comes to the Philippines! Many members of the media returned later in the day for a free-to-enter poker tournament.

The evening wrapped up with the launch party – the music was loud, the San Miguel beer was cold and the promo girls were gorgeous. Now well into its second season, the APPT is developing a genuine “tour” feel, and the launch party is a great chance for everyone to catch up before getting down to the serious business on the green felt.

Not only will the region’s best players be in action today, the who’s who of Philippines’ society circles will take their seats for a special celebrity poker event, which will be filmed for local TV. We’ll be back shortly for the start of day 1A in the PokerStars.net APPT Manila main event.

APPT Manila: Poker fever sweeping the Philippines

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

When the schedule was being drawn up for the first PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour last year, the Philippines was an immediate choice. As one of the few Asian nations where western-style Texas Hold’em games were being spread in casinos and dedicated poker rooms, it made perfect sense to include Manila in the first year of the APPT.

manila1.jpg
Overlooking Manila Bay towards the Hyatt Hotel and Casino, venue for the PokerStars.net APPT Manila main event.

What an event it turned out to be – the first event on the fledgling tour. The focus of the world’s poker media turned to the Hyatt Hotel and Casino where the world best players, including Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem and Daniel Negreanu, were on hand to handle the myriad of questions from curious local reporters.

A field of 254 players eventually took their seats and three days later, 22-year-old student Brett Parise from the USA accepted the honour of being crowned the first APPT champion. Parise, who won his seat to the tournament via a freeroll on PokerStars, collected a life changing USD $180,000.

Since then, this adolescent poker nation has matured into the strongest poker market on the continent. Over the past 12 months, the PokerStars.com Filipino Poker Tour has helped hone a new generation of emerging local players. In the wake of last year’s APPT Manila, the FPT was established with the support of PokerStars with the Metro Card Club in nearby Pasig City acting as the hub for the tour.

The final event on the five-event tour will be the APPT Manila/Filipino Poker Tour: Philippine Championship, meaning the Philippines’ best players will be taking their seats along side the top poker players from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Parise will be back this year, along with scores of international players eager to pursue the 2008 crown, and to experience one of the world’s most diverse cultures.

The influences of Spanish and American culture are easy to spot in the Philippines, as are the indelible mark left by the strong Islamic and Christian influences that date back more than 500 years. The population of 90 million people is spread over more than 7000 islands.

manila3.jpg
The UNESCO World Heritage-listed walled city of Intramuros is one of the most important sites in the Philippines.

But there’s no need to travel outside Manila for an authentic Filipino experience. Despite the issues that come with a metropolis of 14 million people, the city is a warm, exciting and diverse place that is ripe for discovery by any adventurous tourist. English is widely spoken, prices are cheap and you get more than your fair share of sunshine. And the people couldn’t be friendlier.

Just a short walk from five-star hotels like the Hyatt (again the venue for this year’s event) are several restaurants offering not only an astounding array of seafood but a seaside seat for one of the best nightly shows in town: sunset over Manila Bay.

But while the visitors check out the sights, the locals are steeling themselves to ensure the APPT Manila title stays on home turf.

Already, a core group of Filipino players have started to make their mark on the regional poker scene. Filipino-born players like WSOP bracelet winner and 2003 US Poker Champion Alfredo “Toto” Leonidas have forged a reputation in the USA, but now local players like Derick Hernandez, the only local player to reach the final table at last year’s APPT Manila, are showing that success is possible on home soil.

manila2.jpg
Derick Hernandez: leading the local charge.

Joining Hernandez in this year’s field are a swag of PokerStars Sponsored locals including Neil Arce, Ronald Singson, Wally “The Dream” Sombrero plus poker-playing celebs like models Priscilla Meirelles and Sunshine Samson, plus world pool champions Alex Pagulayan and Efren Reyes.

However, they’ll face a stern test against the likes of Team PokerStars Pro Lee “Final Table” Nelson and PokerStars Sponsored players Celina Lin, APPT Seoul heads-up combatants Hidenari Shiono and Yoshihiro Tasaka plus Singaporeans Ivan Tan and Bryan Huang. Player of the year contender John Phan and WPT Ladies Night IV champion JJ Liu complete an impressive line-up of internationals who’ve converged on Manila.

Six of the 24 players who cashed last year were Filipinos, but the hometown contingent will be hoping to go one better this year. Play starts at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino from 12.30pm local time (GMT +8hrs) tomorrow with the first of two day 1 flights.
