WSOP: Winning to give back

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifFor more than five weeks, everyone in the Amazon Room has been focused on one thing: winning as much money as possible and putting it in a pocket.

Now, the players are going to spend their day winning money to give away.

Today marks the third annual Ante Up For Africa charity tournament. It's an event that draws the likes of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Don Cheadle and has all the glitter of a Hollywood opening night.

The $5,000 turbo no-limit hold'em event draws some of the biggest poker and Hollywood names to the Rio. None of the money is being pulled directly from the prize pool, but the players are being encouraged to donate at least 50% of what they win to the Ante Up For Africa efforts. You can be sure, most of the players in the field will donate everything they earn to the struggle to end genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

As always, this red carpet affair is packed with PokerStars players and PokerStars-loving celebs. Among the people flying the PokerStars flag today: Brad Garrett, Montel Williams, Sarah Silverman, Jason Alexander, Nelly, Barry Greenstein, Peter Eastgate, Isabelle Mercier, Jason Mercier, Victor Ramdin, Chad Brown, Joe Hachem, Dennis Phillips, Luca Pagano, Humberto Brenes, J.C. Alvarado, Ylon Schartz, Alex Kravchenko, and Gavin Griffin.

The crisis in Darfur has been going on for six years and killed more than 400,000 people. Hundreds of thousands live without healthy food or decent medical care. Humanitarian groups are being kicked out. It is an international crisis of epic proportion.

In the past few years, Ante Up For Africa has raised more than $2 million to aid the suffering in Darfur. PokerStars players have been giving to cause from the very beginning.

In a poker world that is often depicted as beset with greed, it's nice to have a reminder that many of the players are more charitable than you'd ever realize.

EPT Monte Carlo: Nelly packs his trunk

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

He's got a collection of number one smash hits, goes nowhere without his huge (but very polite) bodyguard, wears diamond earrings more expensive than my house, and is happy to give his time up for worthwhile causes. But Nelly, the U.S rapper who topped the charts with It's Getting Hot in Herre and Dilemma, will not be an EPT champion. Not yet, anyway.

After turning out for PokerStars' Ante Up for Africa tournament on the eve of the EPT Season 5 finale here in Monte Carlo, Nelly was looking forward to playing the $10,000 main event.

He warmed up yesterday with a couple of small games ("I made a bit of cash") and then pitched up this afternoon to play day 1b.

nellyman.JPGNelly, before declaring Monte Carlo a wrap

Alas, his dreams of shooting up the leader board and chasing the estimated $8,500,000 pool were dashed early in the second level. After already taking a big hit to his 30,000 starting stack, he found his A-10 was no match for Andrew Feldman's A-K.

"There was an ace on the flop - A-3-5, I think," Nelly explained as that hulking bodyguard of his checked what I was noting down. "We both slow played our pair and then the money went in on the turn and river. He had me all along!

"I know a fair bit about how to play - but after that hand I realise I clearly don't know as much as I need to! I am very competitive and hate losing, so I will keep learning as I quite like the idea of playing this sort of tournament again.

"I have had such a great time. PokerStars brought me here to play in Ante Up for Africa - a very worthwhile cause. I got to play with Daniel Negreanu and Joe Hachem, both great guys. I've seen them play on TV and they've seen me perform on TV, so it was fun to meet up around the poker table.

"Monte Carlo is a beautiful place. What an experience."

And with that, the singer was off. Exit stage right, pursued by bear-like bodyguard.

* Don't forget you can now follow the PokerStars Blog on Twitter. Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren is playing day 1b and plans to update her progress on her Twitter page, as does Vanessa Rousso.

Isabelle Mercier wins PokerStars’ Ante Up for Africa

Monday, April 27th, 2009

anteupthumb.JPGWhile it was a day of great glamour, drama and sportsmanship, and a day that Isabelle Mercier will remember for a long, long time having secured victory, PokerStars' Ante Up for Africa tournament will go down in the history books for another very good reason - raising more than 250,000 euros for relief efforts in war-torn Darfur, Sudan.

On the eve of the season 5 finale of the European Poker Tour in Monte Carlo, winning money was the last thing on 40 players' minds. Donating money - each of them the 4,000 euros entry fee - was the name of the game, a figure topped up with 100,000 euros from PokerStars.

isabellewinante.JPGIsabelle Mercier

While a host of pro players, including a great turn out of Team PokerStars Pros, provided the poker expertise, a fine group of celebrities from the tv screen, to music and sport provided the glitz that ensured this event not only raised a sizeable sum, but also raised awareness for the continuing problems in Darfur.

The field could not have been a more diverse bunch. U.S rapper Nelly sat with French rugby star Sebastian Chabal; Heroes TV star James Kyson Lee sat with Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg; and French rapper Bruno Lopez - aka Kool Shen - shared the felt with Sex in the City star Jason Lewis. And to bring a touch of royalty to the occasion, England rugby international Mike Tindall had a famous supporter on the rail - his partner Zara Phillips, the Queen's grandaughter.

nellyroussoante.JPGRapper Nelly and Vanessa Rousso

None of this, however, would take attention away from the real reason they were here to play. Isabelle Mercier, who beat former England and Manchester United footballer Teddy Sheringham heads-up after a super-tough final table, summed it up perfectly: "It was great fun to play, but overall I am very proud to have helped raise so much money."

The event started with a glittering red carpet for the press to catch their shots of the stars. Once at the tables, they had 10,000 chips but a fast structure with blinds rising every 20 minutes. The action, unsurprisingly, was fast and furious. Among the celebs showing early promise was Liverpool FC and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina, while Nelly and singer/songwriter The Dream were early fallers. James Kyson Lee was one of those suffering from Isabelle Mercier's early charge: "Isabelle's taking everyone's chips," he lamented. "Ah, but it's my job," came the quick reply.

The actor stayed around until the last two tables before losing the last of his chips to team PokerStars Pro Dario Minieri - his K-10 no good against the Italian's A-7. But he'd enjoyed his time at the tables: "I've done well to last this far," said Lee. "It's been a great experience for me - you can learn so much by just playing at the same table as these pro players."

It was a hard lesson for so many of the celebs. Many fell early, but they were in good company - Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem, Peter Eastgate and Greg Raymer, all world champions, also found the rail before the business end. Three celebs, however, showed they had the guile to make it through to the final table - Sebastian Chabal, Teddy Sheringham and French sports commentator Patrick Chene found themselves on the lofty televised stage along with Tony G and a gaggle of Team Pro survivors.

Chabal, who has a fearsome reputation on the rugby field - something noted by Daniel Negreanu who could not believe rugby players played without padding - had earlier sounded a word of warning: "I was tight. I was really tight. But it doesn't work.
I decided to be more aggressive." And it worked.

chabal1ante.JPGSebastian Chabal

The final table looked like this when they sat down:

Seat 1: Dario Minieri, Team PokerStars Pro, 43,400
Seat 2: John Duthie, Team PokerStars Pro, 39,000
Seat 3: Patrick Chene, 20,100
Seat 4: Sebastian Chabal, 20,300
Seat 5: Luca Pagano, Team PokerStars Pro, 41,500
Seat 6: Tony G, 18,200
Seat 7: Daniel Negreanu, Team PokerStars Pro, 151,000
Seat 8: Teddy Sheringham, 44,900
Seat 9: Isabelle Mercier, Team PokerStars Pro, 42,700

Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu had built up a commanding lead, but Sheringham and Minieri in particular were catching fast as Chabal, then John Duthie and Chene busted. Luca Pagano was next to go - increasing Sheringham's stack in the process - and then Negreanu completed his riches to rags story going out in fifth.

teddy1ante.JPGTeddy Sheringham

Tony G went next, and then Minieri departed in third, his chips moving to Sheringam in a forlorn 10-10 v Q-Q battle, which left the ex-England football star with a 3-1 chip lead over Mercier heads-up.

It wouldn't last long, with blinds rising super fast, the all-in move was the only one that seemed appropriate. It was cat-and-mouse stuff, but Mercier clawed back, edged ahead, then finally snatched victory when her [As][2d] held up against Sheringham's [10s][4h].

While it would be wrong to overlook Isabelle Mercier's win, the real winners are the charities working so hard to bring relief to Darfur, so ravaged by bloody conflict. Our thanks to all our celebrity players for helping to make the first Ante Up for Africa tournament held in Europe such a success.

We'll leave you with Heroes star James Kyson Lee...

Ante Up for Africa: Action from the tournament floor

Monday, April 27th, 2009

anteupthumb.JPGThis page will be updated throughout PokerStars' Ante Up for Africa event here in Monte Carlo. Celebrities have joined some of poker's greats in a 39-strong field, with each of the 4,000 euro buy-ins going to help the relief effort in Darfur.

Each player began with 10,000 chips, but the blinds are increased every 20 minutes. This will be a bumpy ride for some but, hey, it's all in a good cause!

12.35am: Isabelle Mercier wins PokerStars' Ante Up for Africa event
Teddy Sheringham went into heads-up play with a 300,000-100,000 chip lead, but with the blinds growing ever larger - 15,000-30,000 with a 5,000 ante - neither player was in the mood to hang about. No room for pre-flop sparring, then - instead it was all in and call. Isabelle clawed back chips with 6-4 against Sheringham's 5-2, and then got another double up with K-5 against 2-3.

She then took the lead when her K-4 overtook Sheringham's A-5 - then finally clinched victory when her [As][2d] held up against [10s][4h] on a [qc][6d][8d][jd][10d] board which, although giving Sheringham a pair on the river, also completed her flush.

Sheringham, a former professional footballer who starred for Manchester United and England, was by far the longest lasting celebrity in the Ante Up for Africa tournamnet. "It's been a brilliant event for a very worthwhile cause," he said.

Isabelle added: "It was a lot of fun with loads of celebs playing. I got to meet Nelly! The final table was very tough with a lot of pros on it, and Teddy, although he was a celebrity player, did amazingly well. He has a lot of talent.

"Overall it was an amazing success for the charity - and I am very proud to have helped raise so much money."

Congratulations, Isabelle, on your win. We'll have a full wrap of today's successful tournament shortly.

12.20am: Dario Minieri eliminated in 3rd place
Dario Minieri will have bad dreams about pocket tens. Having regained the chip lead, he lost a big pot against Teddy Sheringham when his 10-10 was overtaken by K-J on a J-Q-Q-S-A board. "See, I don't always bluff - sometimes I have a hand when I push all in," Miniseri said as he pushed his chips over to Sheringham.

Just a few hands later, he found [10d][10c] again and pushed once more, again called by Sheringham, who this time had him well covered with [Qc][Qs]. The board ran dry for the Italian Team PokerStars Pro, and he left Isabelle Mercier and Sheringham to fight it out heads up.

12.10am: Tony G falls to Teddy Sheringham
Teddy Sheringham, a man who plied his football trade so well for Tottenham and Manchester United, among others, has eliminated Tony G in 4th place. Sheringham now holds the lead ahead of Dario Minieri, while Isabelle Mercier hangs on in third.

teddyante.JPGSmiles ahead: Teddy Sheringham

12.05am: Negreanu out in fifth
Having held a healthy chip lead at the start of the final table, Daniel Negreanu has seen his chips head south - and now the last few of them are in the arms of Isabelle Mercier. 8-8 for Isabelle, K-Q for Daniel... and no improvement.

12.00pm: Pagano out
Luca Pagano crashes out in sixth place having pushed one too many times with his short stack. He went with K-J with his last 23,000 and was called blind by Dario Minieri with J-3. In a battle of the Italian giants, Dario was dominated - until the board ran 2-3-A-J-J, giving Dario a full house.

11.40pm: Pagano on the brink
Luca Pagano doubled up Teddy Sheringham when his 6-9 offsuit bluff was called by A-7 and found no improvement. That left the Italian short-stacked with just 7,500 - barely enough for the big blind he needed in the next hand. But two double ups - one against Isabelle Mercier (his K-Q v 3-3) and another against Dario Minieri (his A-6 v 4-5) has put a little life back in his stack. Blinds are now up to 6,000-12,000 with a 1,000 ante. Tony G is surprisingly quiet.

11.25pm: Chips!
With six players remaining, and blinds at 4,000-8,000 with a 1,000 ante, we have the following chip count:

Daniel Negreanu, Team PokerStars Pro, 140,500
Isabelle Mercier, Team PokerStars Pro, 69,000
Tony G, 67,500
Luca Pagano, Team PokerStars Pro, 56,000
Dario Minieri, Team PokerStars Pro, 52,100
Teddy Sheringham, 39,500

11.10pm: Chene out, Sheringham doubles
French sports commentator Patrick Chene falls in seventh, busted by Dario Minieri, leaving ex-England footballer Teddy Sheringham as the last surviving celebrity. He did his chances no harm by doubling through Daniel Negreanu. Daniel raised pre-flop to 13,400, Sheringham re-raised all in for a total of 19,400. Call. A-7 for the sportsman, K-J for Daniel - and although the Team Pro held a flush draw after the all-diamond flop, Sheringham made a set on the river. He's now up to nearly 40,000. Neagreanu, though, is still the table captain.

10.50pm: Chabal and Duthie out
The action at the final table is fast and furious. With blinds already up to 1,500-3,000 with a 400 ante, rugby star Sebastian Chabal was first to fall, out in ninth place when he ran into Luca Pagano's flush.

Just two hands later, and Team PokerStars Pro John Duthie joined him on the rail. Dario Minieri had raised to 7,500, Duthie re-raised all in with [Ad][kh] - and Tony G went all in over the top holding [jh][jc]. The [7d][9h][4s] flop was no help for Duthie - and the killer [js] sealed the deal for Tony G. Duthie left in 8th place.

duthieante.JPGJohn Duthie felt the Tony G power

10.25pm: Team Pro dominate final table
The super-fast structure has done its work and we're already down to our final table of nine. While celeb players Teddy Sheringham and Sebastian Chabal will delighted to get this far, it's the Team PokerStars Pro members who have shown their skill to dominate the event. Daniel Negreanu is the huge chip leader with 151,000 - more than three times his nearest rivals Sheringham and Dario Minieri.

Chips!

Seat 1: Dario Minieri, Team PokerStars Pro, 43,400
Seat 2: John Duthie, Team PokerStars Pro, 39,000
Seat 3: Patrick Chene, 20,100
Seat 4: Sebastian Chabal, 20,300
Seat 5: Luca Pagano, Team PokerStars Pro, 41,500
Seat 6: Tony G, 18,200
Seat 7: Daniel Negreanu, Team PokerStars Pro, 151,000
Seat 8: Teddy Sheringham, 44,900
Seat 9: Isabelle Mercier, Team PokerStars Pro, 42,700

10.05pm: Celebs clinging on
With just 12 players left the pro players are taking over. Only a few of our celebs remain, including French rugby's man mountain Sebastian Chabal, Good Charlotte's Joel Madden and Teddy Sheringham. All three share the same table with Tony G and Daniel Negreanu - not the easiest test of an amateur's game.

chabalante.JPGSebastian Chabal

10pm: No more Heroes any more
Jason Kyson Lee's great run is over, felled by the mighty Italian sword of Team PokerStars Pro Dario Minieri. With blinds already up to 1,200-2,400 with a 300 ante, the Heroes star stuck his last 1,800 in with [kc][10c] and was called by Minieri with [ac][7h]. An [ah] did the damage on the turn. "I've done well to last this far," said Lee. "It's been great experience for me - you can learn so much by just playing at the same table as these pro players."

9.45pm: Hachem felled by Tony G
Team PokerStars Pro Joe Hachem's run at Ante Up for Africa is over. With just two tables left, he got his last 10,000 in with [ah][6s] against Tony G's pocket fives, but the [3c][3s][qh][9h][4d] board failed to come to the rescue. "This has been a lot of fun, and it's all for a great cause. The celebs here have been great - they're just normal people around the table, and although they've seen us play on TV they've found we're just normal people at the table too. We're all the same at the end of the day."

9.25pm: Big stacks in the house
Down to two tables and the big stacks belong to Team PokerStars Pro. Daniel Negreanu sits on top with 65,000, while Isabelle Mercier and John Duthie lead the chase with more than 50,000. James Kyson Lee survives after doubling up with pocket queens to K-J on a J-7-9-8-10 board.

kyson2ante.JPGJames Kyson Lee

9.15pm: Heroes to nearly zero
Action on table three. Heroes TV star James Kyson Lee is down to 2,000 after losing out in a three-way pot. He saw a flop holding [ac][ks] along with John Duthie with [10c][js] and Thierry Nivel with [10h][10d]. The flop came [9d][10s][6c], making a set for Nivel and giving only brief hope for Duthie. The [qs] on the turn and the [6h] on the river changed nothing, and Nivel tripled up, leaving Lee on his last 2,500.

9.05pm: Daniel finds kings again - Reina out!
Daniel Negreanu has done it again, this time finding [kd][kc] and getting it all in pre-flop against Liverpool FC and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina's [js][jc]. The board ran dry for the Premiership footballer - [5d][2c][6s][2d][8h] - and it's game over for him. "What can you do? That was simply unlucky," said Reina. "But playing with pros like Daniel has been great."

8.50pm: Negreanu kings take out Gallacher
Daniel Negreanu busted Kirsty Gallacher, getting his [Kd][Ks] all in pre flop against her [8h][8c]. No help on the board for the British TV star, and Daniel takes his stack up to around 40,000. Also sharing his table now is Team PokerStars Pro and current world champion Peter Eastgate, now vying for the chip lead with Isabelle Mercier on around 60,000.

8:40pm: Isabelle showing no mercy
Down to three tables already, and our chip leader is no less than Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier. "This is a lot of fun - but I'm here to win," she said, counting her stack to reveal more than 45,000 chips. Two seats to her left is a shell-shocked Heroes star James Kyson Lee, who is struggling to maintain his 10,000 starting stack. "Isablle's taking everyone's chips," he lamented. "Ah, but it's my job," came the quick reply.

Meanwhile former England rugby international Mike Tindall has renewed battle with French foe Sebastian Chabal, sitting together as they now do on an outer table. "This is such a great rivalry. It's like an England v France game." For American readers unsure about the ins and outs of European rugby, all you need to know is England v France is a full on, blood and guts affair. I won't take sides, but we English invented the game. Say no more.

8.15pm: Players are on a 15-minute break
We warned this would be fast - and already we're down to less than 30 of our 40 starters. Remaining players are enjoying a quick break.

8.10pm: Rugby is brutal
Daniel Negreanu is enjoying sitting on the feature table with two of rugby's finest - Sebastian Chabal and Mike Tindall. "I'm having great fun," he told me. "I've been learning all about rugby - and what I've learnt is that it is brutal. They don't even wear padding!" Daniel is still going strong, as are the two rugby stars and Team Pro John Duthie, who we now know was responsible for knocking out Nelly.

7.55pm: Wise words for Kirsty
UK sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher is still in the thick of it, despite admitting she's never really played poker before. But as this is a charitable night, first Team PokerStars Pro Humberto Brenes sat down to give her advice, and now EPT presenter and ace player Kara Scott is offering the words of wisdom.

7.40:pm: Not on your Nelly
Rapper Nelly is out joining singer/songwriter The Dream on the rail. The Dream has a nightmare, falling to Mike Tindall. With a lightening fast structure, and some questionable play which you'd expect at such charity events, the field is thinning super fast.

nelly3ante.JPGNelly before the axe fell

Earlier, the rap star told our video team of what the day really meant to him...

Watch Ante Up for Africa Europe: Interview with Nelly on PokerStars.tv

7:30pm: Pepe Reina saves his chips
Liverpool FC and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina is sandwiched between Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer. A world champion on either side might be daunting to some, but not Pepe, who has showed great handling, raising and knocking the pros off pots without so much as a whisper. His 2,000 pot-sized bet on a [kc][qc][6d] board was enough to send Hachem packing, while a pre-flop raise on the very next hand had the same effect.

pepefootante.JPGLiverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, second left, plays table soccer - in goal, of course

7.15pm: Ylon one of the first to fall
One of Team PokerStars Pro's newest members, Ylon Schwartz, is the first out, running into a Peter Gould full house. The table was tough enough, what with Greg Raymer, Luca Pagano and Joe Hachem jockeying for chips with former England footballer and poker enthusiast Teddy Sheringham, and Sex in the City's Jason Lewis.

7pm: And we're off!
EPT host Neil Johnson has just called shuffle up and deal, and the cards are in the air,. Already each of our five tables has a curious mix of players that only charity events like this can generate. The feature TV table, atop a splendid set, has rapper Nelly who quickly found it was getting hot in here when Team PokerSars Pro Daniel Negreanu sat down at the table as well. And then fellow Pro and EPT creator John Duthie. Also sharing their felt are great rugby foes - France's Sebastian Chabal and England's Mike Tindall, as well as singer/songwriter The Dream.

Ante Up for Africa: Stars take to the poker stage

Monday, April 27th, 2009

anteupthumb.JPGWalk around Monte Carlo and the chances are you'll rub shoulders with someone rich or famous. Business tycoons, actors, Formula One racing drivers, and Royalty - all live and prosper in the small principality of Monaco. Had you by chance been in the tournament area of the Monte Carlo Bay Resort hotel just now you would have met them all at once.

Stars of screen, music and sport, arrived for one purpose - to play poker in PokerStars' Ante Up for Africa tournament, the first time this charity, which raises funds to help humanitarian efforts in war-torn Darfur, has run in Europe. Look in one direction, and you'd see U.S. rap star Nelly warming up for the tournament by playing table soccer with Team PokerStars Pro Greg Raymer. Turn around and you'd see screen stars James Kyson Lee from Heroes and Jason Lewis from Sex in the City.

nelly4ante.JPGRap star Nelly

Also here is F1 racing driver Nico Rosberg, straight off the plane from yesterday's Grand Prix in Bahrain, Liverpool FC and Spain's goalkeeper Pepe Reina. And, although this may not mean a great deal to our American readers, two rugby greats have renewed old rivalries, this time across the felt, in the huge - make that hulking - shape of France's Sebastian Chabal and England's Mike Tindall.

Chabal has a fearsome reputation on the field, but off it he is as charming and, dare I say soft, as anyone you're likely to meet. To prove the point, before play started he revealed he was nervous about playing poker with the Pros - but that if any of these poker players wandered on to his rugby field they'd not just be nervous, they'd be terrified.

chabaltindall1.JPGRugby "enemies" Sebastian Chabal and Mike Tindall

Mike Tindall's partner just happens to be Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, which makes her the Queen of England's granddaughter. That's right - we have Royalty here to watch a tournament that will raise a pretty sum as well great awareness for the relief efforts in Darfur.

zarakirsty1.JPGZara Phillips, right, and UK TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher

Everyone playing has stumped up 4,000 euros to be part of a charity event which has been such a great success when held in Las Vegas. Everyone is playing for the cause - with all prize money going straight to the charity. PokerStars has waived all normal tournament fees.

The players have finished their media duties and are now taking their seats around the tables. We'll be back with what is sure to be some intriguing seat draws shortly.

While they do, have look at what our video team have put together for the start of play...

PokerStars’ Ante Up for Africa reveals poker’s heart of gold

Monday, April 27th, 2009

anteupthumb.JPGAs you arrive in Monaco, driven in a gravity-defying manner along winding mountain roads that have the comfort of a wall of rock on one side but a terrifying 1,000-metre drop on the other, you can almost smell the money. This place has more millionaires per square foot than almost any place on earth, with a healthy collection of billionaires thrown in for good measure. And this is where, tomorrow, the PokerStars EPT season five winds up with the Monte Carlo grand final, expected to be the richest poker tournament in European history.

It's easy to get carried away with the sheer extravagance, from the boutiques selling at jaw-dropping prices to the hotel-sized yachts in the marina, and from the "beautiful people" dripping in the finest jewellery to the sound of yet another Ferrari passing by with its engine whining and gurgling, almost complaining at having to go so slowly.

But the poker community has shown that while money, and winning extraordinary amounts of it, is the name of the game, it has a heart. It does not lose grip of reality; it is prepared to dig deep into its own pocket to help those less fortunate.

Only last week, at the opulent resort of San Remo in Italy, PokerStars EPT players raised $70,000 for the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the country's central region just weeks earlier. PokerStars has raised funds for other causes, including another event to help victims of the earthquake in the south-west region of China in May of last year.

Now it is focussing on the continuing crisis in war-torn Darfur, Sudan, and will later today host the first Ante Up for Africa tournament in Europe. It will be glamorous, packed with celebrities from the world of music, sport and the small screen, all paying $4,000 to take on some of poker's biggest names, including several from our own Team PokerStars Pro. And the best bit? They're all playing for the cause - each cent from every buy-in will go to the Darfur fund; no-one here will win a thing.

While Ante Up for Africa has become a fixture in Las Vegas, this will be its first event in Europe. The action kicks off in the Sporting Casino, right here in Monaco at around 6pm local time. The PokerStars Blog will bring you all the action together with the brilliant photography of Neil Stoddart and our excellent video interviews with the celebs.

Meanwhile, you can learn more about the event in our earlier report - PokerStars Brings Ante Up For Africa to Europe.

PokerStars brings Ante Up For Africa to Europe

    Thursday, April 16th, 2009

anteupthumb.JPGPokerStars has revealed a star-studded addition to its EPT Grand Final festival in Monte Carlo - the Ante Up For Africa charity tournament. The special event will raise money and awareness for the current humanitarian relief efforts in crisis-torn Darfur.

As the best poker players from around the world converge on Monaco for the EPT Grand Final, Europe's richest poker tournament, a host of A-list celebrities and players will take their seats at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel on April 27 and play for entirely different stakes - a €4,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em charity event with all the money raised destined for those at the sharp end of the relief effort in Darfur.

It's not the first time Ante Up For Africa has successfully highlighted the current situation in the region. PokerStars was instrumental in organizing the event's latest incarnation last summer in Las Vegas, where a who's who of Hollywood and poker helped raise vital money for the cause.

Familiar faces from the big screen, such as Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Shannon Elizabeth and Adam Sandler sat alongside poker greats such as Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem, Daniel Negreanu and Barry Greenstein, as well as former world champions and legends of the game like Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson and Annie Duke.

It's hoped that the worthwhile cause, coupled with the glittering backdrop of the stunning Monte Carlo skyline, will lure another cast of dignitaries to the tables for one of the world's most pressing causes. PokerStars will be awarding a special prize package to their flagship EPT event in the Bahamas' in January 2010.

The plight of the people of Darfur has grown in relevance over a number of years. While the situation has improved in some ways conditions remain perilous on the ground. A relentless campaign of ethnic cleansing has left 400,000 dead and almost four million people displaced and living in squalid conditions in refugee camps along the Chad/Sudan border.

Essential aid has never been more vital. Help is needed to support those doing vital humanitarian work on the ground. This is where organizations like Not In Our Name and Enough, alongside events like the Ante Up For Africa, come in with vital fundraising, not only supporting the humanitarian efforts but campaigning for change in the region.

Already those changes are being seen.

A new US envoy has begun high level talks with the Sudanese government and two top Sudanese officials have been indicted by the International Criminal Court with more expected to follow.

Further pressure has led to companies pulling out of Sudan amounting to divestiture of tens of millions of dollars, while 22 US states now have laws in place forbidding pension funds from investing in companies that do business in Sudan. More states, including Nevada, are in the process of doing the same.

In light of this momentum the aim of PokerStars and Ante Up For Africa is to tap into the generosity of the poker playing community and raise vital funds for those making a difference in the region. With a poker tournament and a few Hollywood stars and poker world champions thrown in, they can make sure Darfur is something no one can ever ignore.
