WSOP Main Event: Will the real Dennis Phillips please stand up?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifIn the climax of the Hollywood film "The Thomas Crowne Affair," the protagonist, a lovable yet mischievous super thief, avoids the authorities by dressing up dozens of people in a museum exactly as he is--a bowler hat and finely-tailored black suit. The gambit works and Crowne escapes.

The scene in the Amazon Room today is reminiscent of the big screen show. Every few minutes, you'll think, "There goes Dennis Phillips!" Then a second later, it's "No, THERE'S Dennis Phillips!" A bit of investigation reveals Dennis Phillips has once again brought a posse of doppelgangers to root him on at the World Series.

"There must be at least 40 of us," said one southern California fan.

Phillips is both loved and generous. His fans come from all reaches, and his friends--"Five or six of them," Phillps said--received courtesy buy-ins to the World Series from their buddy who placed third in last year's Main Event.

"We have fun," Phillips said with a smile.

As Phillips sits in Day 1C, he looks a bit like a NASCAR driver. His shirt has more patches than buttons. In one glance, he is an advertisement for Ford trucks, Poker Road, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, PokerStars, the EPT, the APPT, the LAPT, Bad Beat on Cancer, the Albert Pujols Family Foundation, and the Schindler Law Firm.

You will note quite a few charities on the list of Phillips advertisements. A connection you might miss is a single signature on his fresh St. Louis Cardinals cap. It reads: "Dan Harrington."

"I'm getting as many notable pros to sign my hat and then I'm going to auction it off for charity," he said.

Somebody may want to tell Phillips that he should sign the hat, too, as he's becoming pretty notable around these parts--not to mention ubiquitous.

ELIMINATION OF THE HOUR

Daniel Negreanu has been eliminated from the featured table after his pocket threes were no good against queens. He told ESPN after his bust that he woke up sick, took some cold medicine, and didn't have his head about him today.

QUOTE OF THE (FIRST) HOUR

Latecomer to table: No one ate my jerky, did they?
Everyone else: Err, no. It's there.
Latecomer: Damn.

THANKLESS TASK OF THE HOUR

Two Rio cleaning staff dispatched with dustpan and brooms to clear up rose petals scattered the length of the approach hall to the Amazon Ballroom after Phil Hellmuth's arrival.

RULE COMMENTARY OF THE HOUR

The F-bomb rule has been narrowed a bit this year, causing a bit of confusion abut when exactly it is appropriate to use the word. Brett Jungblut explained, "You can say it to yourself, as long as you don't say it to yourself too loud."

LOUD MOUTH OF THE HOUR

Convinced he's safe till November.

"It's not gonna happen guys. Change gear, change good luck charms, it's not gonna happen. It's 'Alan', with one 'L'. If I'm in day five you won't have to look it up I promise."

COLLAPSE OF THE HOUR

WSOP Event #7: Germans shine for PokerStars

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifThe second no limit event of the series, the $1,500, began yesterday with another huge field - 2,791 players packed into the Amazon and two other rooms for a shot at WSOP glory. Among the masses, we had a fair few Team PokerStars players, but only two survived to make the money when the bubble broke - after what seemed like an age - just a few moments ago.

Team PokerStars Germany players Sandra Naujoks, the EPT Dortmund champion, and Florian Langmann made it to the last 297, ensuring a payday guaranteed to be at least $2,743. That's small change to these two, who will be aiming much higher as they try to make a deep run to the final table tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the $2,500 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball continues over in one corner of the Amazon Room. 147 intrepid souls paid out to try and make the worst hand possible in one of poker's rarer forms.

We know Barry Greenstein likes to Tweet, and our photographer Joe Giron caught this moment when the Bear was sending another update to his legions of fans...

Other Team PokerStars Pros in the field, now down to 27 with the money kicking in at 21st, are Vanessa Rousso and, until a few moments ago at least, George Danzer.

This event's final table will play out tomorrow.

Kicking off today was the three-day $1,500 No Limit Hold'em six-handed event. Here sits Team PokerStars Pro Ylon Schwartz, who busted soon after sitting down in the sister $1,500 no limit event yesterday.

We were pleased to bump into him looking a happier man today, and no wonder...

"I'm really warming up now," he said. "I made it to the first break this time!"

Joining Schwartz, who final tabled the WSOP Main Event last year, are Maridu Mayrinck, Alex Gomes and Gavin Griffin.

WSOP Event #7: The low-key return of Dennis Phillips

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifThe last time we sat at the Rio with Dennis Phillips he had an incredible 300 supporters, all decked out in his trademark white shirt and red St. Louis Cardinals cap, cheering his every move at the 2008 WSOP Main Event final table. Many carried hand fans bearing the face of the man who went on to finish third for $4,500,000.

Nearly six months on, and Phillips is back, having spent the time between enjoying himself, joining Team PokerStars Pro, and heading around the world with PokerStars to play poker. It's a whole new life, as the fact that I bumped into his lawyer in Monte Carlo would testify.

dennisphillips1k.jpgDennis Phillips

His return to the Amazon Room has been a bit more low-key. He did not make any huge inroads in the $40,000 No limit event, and today at the $1,500 No Limit was no better - he bust on day one having never been able to get his game going.

But the former truck salesman remains upbeat, waving a cheery hello to this blogger, knowing that the WSOP has only just got under way, and he'll have plenty of time to make a deep run again. If he does you can bet the folks in the picture below will be back.

phillipsfans.jpg

Also having a slow start to his series is Team PokerStars Pro Dario Minieri. The diminuitive Italian can be deadly at the tables, so he'll brush it off as a blip and be back later for a shot at another event.

Doing very much better in the $1,500, which has already lost half of the field at the dinner beak, are ElkY, Sandra Naujoks and Humberto Brenes. While ElkY and the Costa Rican have near 15,000 from their 4,500 starting stack, Naujocks, who won her home EPT in Dortmund in March, is up to nearer 30,000.

***************

Today also saw the start of one of the more obscure poker games to grace the WSOP - the $2,500 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball. It's a three-day event that attracted 148 players, including Team PokerStars Pros Greg Raymer, Barry Greenstein, Vanessa Rousso, Victor Ramdin (our first Ramdin sighting of the series so far) and Minieri, fresh from his bustout from the $1500 no limit event.

dario1k.jpgDario Minieri

As he sat down, Minieri gave his table companions, including David Rheem, a tip.... "I've never played this game before," he said.

Also playing is Team PokerStars Germany Pro George Danzer.

WSOP Event #7: ElkY swimming in a tide of blood

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

wsop2009_thn.gifAnd still they come. Another day, a new event and another extraordinary turn out at the Rio. This time the masses have arrived for the start of the $1,500 No Limit - 2,793 of them. It may be considered one of the low-buy in events, but when the pros sniff blood they converge like Great Whites on a school of fattened seal pups.

One of those is Team PokerStars Pro ElkY, considered to be one of the best tournament players on the circuit right now.

elkyday1a1500.jpgElkY

The man is simply machine-like in his execution at the moment, and rapidly making a name as something of a beast. Consider his recent results:

- WPT $25K Championship Event: 3rd for $776,000
- NBC $20K Heads Up Championship: 3rd for $125,000
- EPT Deauville €20K High Roller: 3rd for $101,000
- PCA $24,500 High Roller: 1st for $433,000
- WPT $15,000 Championship: 1st for $1,411,000

And that's just since last October. Don't forget that in January of last year he also won the PCA for another $2,000,000.

You might feel sorry, therefore, for the part-time players who forked out $1,500 for a shot at this event, only to find themselves on Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier's table.

He'll play many a hand, but his fearsome reputation may explain why his opening minimum raise to 200 in level 2 was met by only a call from two players behind him - one with pocket queens and the other with pocket nines. The [Js][7s][jd][5s] board was enough to scare ElkY off on the turn, but the other two ended up all in. Early in an event like this, they got it in with an overpair and the other with an underpair on a paired and flushing board.

The queens held up, by the way, but this is perhaps a good example of why ElkY stays in tournaments until the big money kicks in, while so many others spill their guts early. It means one thing for sure, the Rio is awash with blood right now.

elkytable.jpgElky sitting in the Miranda Room

We've a fair bunch of Team PokerStars players in the field today, with those spotted so far including Humberto Brenes, Vanessa Rousso, Dennis Phillips, Ylon Schwartz, Hevad Khan, Dario Minieri, Maridu Mayrinck, Peter Eastgate, Sandra Naujoks and Florian Langmann.

Schwartz was playing in his first WSOP event since finishing fourth in the Main Event last November. I say was, because he may well be out already. He had only 400 or so chips from his 4,500 when I found him deep in level one.

"It's my first event of the series and I really have got off to a flying start," he lamented.

Avid Team PokerStars Pro Twitterers in the field today for your Tweeting delight are Vanessa Rousso and Maridu Mayrinck.

Day two of the $10K 7-card Stud is kicking off right now, and we'll keeping a close watch on that today as well.
