2010 PokerStars Year in Review

Friday, December 31st, 2010

ps_news_thn.jpgIf someone told us that Harrison Gimbel won the PCA last week, we wouldn't be all that surprised. Though we've since traveled the world of PokerStars tournaments and the labyrinth of the online contests, it seems barely any time has passed since we were sitting at Atlantis in January and watching Gimbel become the youngest-ever PCA winner. Somehow, 12 months have passed, and in that time we've seen and written so much, it's almost impossible to believe it's all happened.

To reassure ourselves it's not been one big fever dream, we've looked back at the 2010 archives and picked out some of the top stories. It's something we've done each December since 2005. Now it's time to do it again.

Our passports are worn, our fingers are numb, and our eyes are crossed, but we've enjoyed this latest trip around the sun. It's time to pack our bags for 2011. While we're doing that, here's a look back what happened in 2010.

Happy New Year, folks.

Previous years: 2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005

The year the women “outplayed” the men

Friday, December 31st, 2010

ps_news_thn.jpgI'm not one to argue with Daniel Negreanu about poker. Never have, never will. The man knows poker and is an international poker celebrity and a spokesperson for PokerStars around the world. So when he made some comments about women in poker recently my ears perked up--especially when he was talking about the women at PokerStars specifically. Now Daniel is known for speaking his mind and letting the chips fall where they may (couldn't resist) and this time is no different. His candid remarks may offend some people (only the fifty percent or so of the population who aren't women) when they are picked up by the media, but I'm happy to report that this time, it certainly won't be women. This time what he said may get the guys a bit steamed, but what's a little tilting here and there? It's all part of the game, right?

So what did he say already? Daniel gets the ball rolling by saying that the "breakout player of the year" was Vanessa Selbst, which came as no surprise if you have been following her amazing success this year. With cashes totaling almost $3M this year, she is a hands-down favorite for that title. As a result, Daniel called her the "team MVP." Vanessa's two major tournament wins this year and her other ITM deep finishes have certainly pushed her to the top tier of that elite group. So that, in and of itself, is a great accomplishment for Vanessa and a very impressive accolade for the women on the team.

But what really surprised me and maybe Daniel himself was the quote that followed. He did some analysis of the PokerStars Team Pro members for 2010 overall, and here's the quote that got my attention: "Another thing I found interesting is how badly the PokerStars boys were outplayed by the women!" Now that's a quote that is bound to get some attention in the press, so as the editor of the PokerStars Women site, I want to be the first to run with it! Daniel is recognizing the incredible strides that women on the team are making and going so far as to say that the men were "outplayed" by the women. Now that's news!

daniel_negreanu_men_vs_women.JPG

This all came about when Daniel (as he puts it, "a full-fledged stats geek") began analyzing his stats, along with those of the other Team PokerStars Pro members. What he found was that of the top ten players on the team in 2010 (based on earnings) the top two spots were held by women (Vanessa Selbst and Liv Boeree respectively) and Vanessa Rousso brought in the third top ten ranking, just behind Daniels' eighth place finish. This is an incredible feat, considering that women usually make up less than five percent of the field in big open events and represent only seven out of seventy-five spots on the team.

Daniel calls them as he sees them, and his comments are sure to bring home the message to everyone in the poker community that this was the " year of the woman," after all, and for PokerStars female pros in particular, it was a very good year.

To see Daniel's full list and other stats, see this link to his blog.

Ladies packing for the PCA–Flip flops, suntan lotion, a big bag for money

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

PCA-2010-thumbnail.jpgAs 2011 approaches most people that I know are making plans to celebrate with a bottle of champagne and maybe a party with friends. Many of them are also trying to locate a last minute designated driver for the evening so they can enjoy a few drinks before heading back to work the Monday after.

A select group of poker players from around the world however, are looking forward to a different kind of party, one that's a bit more luxurious. They either had a few thousand to spare to pay their entry to this premier event or won it by playing on PokerStars. And for those players lucky enough to attend, it will be the New Year's party of the year. At this party, no designated driver is necessary, since everything is within walking distance at one of the most luxurious resorts in the world--The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

Instead of a designated driver they will need a few things however; namely flip flops, suntan lotion and a big bag of money to take home the money they are looking to win at the tournament.

Two of the people who will be making that trek are winners of a Luxury Ladies Poker Event package that they won playing satellites on PokerStars. They will be enjoying five days of what can only be described as a poker player's dream vacation. They are looking forward to their entry into a $1k buy-in ladies tournament, expense money for airfare, four nights at the Atlantis, a poker boot camp hosted by Vanessa Rousso, and a holistic mind/body beach camp to get their mental game focused on bringing home the loot when it's all over. The package is worth $3,480, and the two ladies profiled here won it for pennies on the dollar.

Rose Genest, a nurse from Hamilton, Ontario, will be going to the Bahamas as a result of playing a $10 rebuy on PokerStars (total investment of $30). The rebuy got her into the final where she won her seat against 70 other players. She says that she was "in total shock" when she won and when she recovered a bit, she did some "bragging" because she was so proud. It took a week or two for her to come back to earth.

She says she has never been to Atlantis and is looking forward to seeing all the things Atlantis has to offer. Besides the tournament, she is looking forward to meeting some of the women from the PokerStars Women's League. She says, "I have made so many friends from the league and we keep in touch via emails." She says she is also looking forward to the boot camp by Vanessa Rousso. Rose says the biggest live tournament she has played prior to this was a $300 buy-in, so she plans to play some bigger tournaments soon as a warm-up to the PCA.

How will she handle the pros she's bound to run up against at the tournament? "With class, professionalism, and respect. I would treat them as if they were any other poker player." To help out on that end, she says she has been preparing by watching videos and studying their "moves and style of play." She says that if she wins she would "play more poker, which is what I enjoy doing." She would plan to play more events at the WSOP and possibly an NAPT event.

Another qualifier who won her seat on PokerStars is Jennifer Shahade. In addition to being a writer for PokerStars Women (Jennifer writes strategy articles for the site), she is a world class chess player, and a winning poker player. Jennifer has played the Ladies Event at the WSOP and cashed twice, once in 2007 in 17th place, and again in 2008 in 33rd place. Jennifer won her seat in the first tournament she entered on PokerStars, so it looks as though she takes her own advice and knows how to play these things!

Jennifer was hesitant to play the tournament after getting knocked out of a previous tournament on a bad beat. She debated about whether to play, because she was concerned that the result of the previous tournament might influence her play. But apparently, it spurred her on instead, and she went on to win the only seat. The first thing she did after winning was to call her dad. Later that night, she also called her brother, who is a poker pro, to "go over some of the hand histories and discuss some of the key decisions."

Jennifer has never been to the Bahamas, and in addition to "exploring the Atlantis and walking on the beach," she looks forward to "meeting ladies from the PokerStars Women's League at Vanessa Rousso's boot camp." She's also looking forward to experiencing one of the legendary PokerStars parties at the end of the event.

On playing against the pros she comments, "There will be lots of differences in the way I approach a hand against someone I recognize as a professional than with an unknown. For instance, if I'm playing with a big time pro who normally plays in much higher buy-in tournaments, I'll know that they're not very concerned with bubbling, which may influence some of my decisions." During the tournament, she says she "doesn't like to think of the chips as money, because that would make me play way too tight." And if she wins? She says "It would go right back into the poker bankroll! But I'd take some out to buy a round of drinks for everyone at the final table."

And finally, there is Elizabeth Bennett-Martin. Elizabeth will be playing the Main Event at the PCA as a three-for-three winner in the satellites. Elizabeth won her seat for the third year in a row by playing the $11 rebuy on PokerStars. The first year she qualified (in 2009) she was one of only seven female satellite winners, and she cashed in 25th place for $40,000. She was one of only fourteen women in the entire tournament that year, playing against 1,333 men.

elizabath_bennett_martin_PCA.jpg

Elizabeth's overall investment in the last three years to win three packages has totaled less than $1500. Her first year's buy-in was earned with a $21 investment on her first try. The last two have cost a bit more, but an investment of under $1500 for packages that total in excess of $45,000 is a pretty incredible return on investment. (Packages include the main event buy-in, seven night's hotel, and expenses for airfare and food. This year's package is worth $15,780).

She has brought her entire family along each year, so it is becoming a ritual that they all look forward to. As a matter of fact, her kids check in periodically with her on weekends when she plays poker, anxious to get the green light to start packing again for the Bahamas! She says they give her good luck charms and keep her fortified with Diet Cokes.

In addition to the tournament, what is she looking forward to the most? "My family loves all the water activities and the slides, and we enjoy eating at all the restaurants," Elizabeth says. She also likes going into town to explore and shop at the Straw Market.
Elizabeth considers herself a "serious recreational player," who doesn't plan to play professionally. She is an attorney and loves her job, so would never give it up to play poker. She also coordinates a charity called CLEW (Cambodian Legal Education for Women) that pays for the education of young girls to attend law school in Cambodia. They are currently supporting 25 girls at university. If she cashes again, she plans to donate some of the money to the charity.

These are just a few of the skilled (and lucky!) women who will be playing the PCA in January. We will check in with many more of them during the event and keep you informed of their progress. Until then, play some satellites and win your seat so you can join us there! It's going to be a blast!

Isildur1 to face Tony G. in next SuperStar Showdown

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

ps_news_thn.jpgWell, this should be good.

We'd been hearing for days about a SuperStar Showdown match in the offing just after the first of the year. We'd picked up some rumblings about who might be involved, and just minutes ago it was confirmed for us: Isildur1 will play the notorious Tony G in a high stakes battle.

On January 2nd at 16:00 ET, the King of Swing will meet The G. heads up over four tables. The game will be half no-limit hold'em and half pot-limit Omaha at $50/$100 stakes. Both players have escrowed $150,000 for the match.

If you're not familiar with Tony G., you probably haven't been watching televised poker over the past several years. Infamous for his coffee-housing and relentless needling, Tony G. takes a particular pleasure in dissecting his opponents verbally. If his mouth doesn't give him away at the tables, his screen name will. You'll find him in the SuperStar Showdown under the likely nom de guerre Tony G.

tony_g_pokerstars_isildur1.jpg

After Isildur1's first SuperStar Showdown against Isaac Haxton (that one ended with a $40,000 loss for the new Team PokerStars Pro) there's been a fairly consistent line-up of people ready to take on the mystery man. It's gone badly for most of them this week.

After the rocky PokerStars start in which Isildur1 saw his account evaporate, the Team Pro showed up on December 26th with what appeared to be only $10,000 available to play. In just the past few days, Isildur1 has run that up to more than $300,000.

On Monday, Isildur1 hit the tables and played a little less than 4,000 hands for a $117,720 shot in the arm. Yesterday, he played nearly 9,000 hands for another $172,062 bump. Already today, Isildur1 has been in action and eviscerating anyone who sits down across from him.

That is a long way of saying, Tony G. will be running into Isildur1 at a fun, flush time. It should make for some entertaining railing.

The PokerStars Blog will have full coverage of the match on Sunday night. If you'd like to watch as it happens (make sure the kids are out of the room), here are the details:

Isildur1 vs. Tony G
Time: 16:00 ET
Stakes: $50/$100

Super Tuesday 12/28/10: Engelberth.v gets over the hump to end 2010

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Super Tuesday logo.png

The final Super Tuesday of 2010 saw a field of 396 players registered, creating a prize pool of $396,000 with the last 45 players picking up some post-holiday cash. The final table of nine would earn from $6,930 to an expected first place prize of $76,626. The unfortunate bubble boy tonight would be former WCOOP winner Daniel "djk123" Kelly.

Team Pokerstars Pros Johnny Lodden, Marcello Del Grosso, Alex Gomes, Pat Pezzin participated in tonight's tournament, but failed to make the money. The only member of Team PokerStars Pro who would have that honor would be Victor Ramdin as he made a deep run before eventually finishing in 13th place for $4,950.00.

Hand for hand play at the final table bubble lasted an extended period of time before PQuest99 finished in 10th place, cashing in for $5,940.00. The blinds were at 2,400/4,800 with an ante of 600 as BBOY3110 opened from UTG to 9,995 with [jh][js]. Action folded to PQuest99 in the big blind, moving all-in for their remaining 83,057 chips with [qh][th]. BBOY310 made the call, and the board ran out [9h] [5s] [Kd] [5d] [2h] as the last Super Tuesday final table of 2010 was now set.

12-28-10 Super Tuesday final table.JPG

How the remaining nine players were seated when play began at the final table:

Seat 1: TeeMoneyTN (147,438 in chips)
Seat 2: zaxman13 (287,140 in chips)
Seat 3: engelberth.v (269,268 in chips)
Seat 4: Wumax (158,201 in chips)
Seat 5: JoeGall (301,568 in chips)
Seat 6: RynCzechLion (256,960 in chips)
Seat 7: BBOY3110 (274,783 in chips)
Seat 8: Ericb09 (140,796 in chips)
Seat 9: g.karolis (143,846 in chips)

The first elimination at the final table would turn out to be the final hand at the 2,400/4,800/600 level as Ericb09 would exit in 9th place, earning $6,930.00. The hand started with zaxman13 opening from UTG to 9,984 with [kh][ks], followed by a raise from BBOY3110 to 24,500. Ericb09 shoved for 115,596 from the button with [9d][9c] as zaxman13 made the call and BBOY3110 folded. The hoped for two-outter by Ericb09 didn't arrive as the board came down [2c] [2s] [6c] [Js] [Ts] meant an empty space replaced his avatar at the final table.

The next player to possibly get a congratulatory email for finishing in 8th place was g.karolis whose pair ran into a bigger pair, picking up $9,504.00. The blinds were now up to 3,200/6,400 with an ante of 800 when action in the hand had folded around to RynCzechLion, opening for 14,175 with [kh][kd]. In the small blind, g.karolis moved in for their remaining 76,884 in chips with [th][td]. RynCzechLion quickly called and had the hand locked up on the turn as the board was [4d] [2h] [8d] [Kc] [Ad] with the remaining seven players each guaranteed a five figure score.

JoeGall, who held the chip lead when he final table began, crashed and burned to finish in 7th place, pocketing a disappointing $13,446.00. The blinds had jumped to 3,600/7,200 with an ante of 900 as BBOY3110 opened from UTG to 15,995. Action folded to JoeGall in the small blind, moving in for their last 46,299 from the small blind as BBOY3110 made the call. When the cards were turned over, BBOY3110 held the lead with [qh][9s] as JoeGall held [th][9h]. The board ran out [Ah] [Ad] [3s] [9d] [6h] as the queen kicker played and JoeGall's image disappeared from the final table as BBOY3110 moved into the chip lead.

The tournament rolled into the 10th hour with six players left, but TeeMoneyTN wasn't going to make it to the next break. The blinds displayed 4,000/8,000 with an ante of 1,000 as BBOY3110 opened from UTG to 17,995. TeeMoneyTN took the opportunity to put their last 103,186 chips in the middle from UTG +1. The new chipleader, engelberth.v, made the call as BBOY3110 decided to let go of their hand. When the cards were on their backs TeeMoneyTN was dominated, holding [as][9d] while engelberth.v held [ah][qc]. The flop was [Ts] [Qd] [4c], and TeeMoneyTN's comeback thoughts of runner-runner were quickly dashed when the turn and river cards were the [8s][6h] as TeeMoneyTN was dispatched in 6th place, earning $17,424.00.

As the blinds now moved up to 4,500/9,000 with an ante of 1,125, having the better pocket pair in all-in confrontations was becoming the norm. Holding [ac][ad], Wumax surely had that thought in mind after seeing RynCzechLion holding [9s][9c]. Mentioning this detail means you know what's about to happen, right?:

Wumax earned $22,572 for their 5th place finish.

With play four-handed, the next elimination was from a blind v blind situation with the chips going in on the river. In the small blind, BBOY3110 raised to 24,800 as zaxman13 made the call. The pair saw the [2h] [6d] [9d] as BBOY3110 led out with a bet of 28,900 as zaxman13 made the call. The turn was the [2d] as BBOY3110 led out with a bet of 43,000. This time, zaxman13 raised to 96,000 as BBOY3110 made the call. The [7s] came on the river, and this time BBOY3110 decided to check. This decision had zaxman13 going all-in for their remaining 126,989 and BBOY3110 decided to make the call. When the cards were shown, zaxman13 held [jd][th] while BBOY3110 held [qd][6h]. as zaxman13's bluff meant a 4th place finish, good for $32,670.

A short time later, the chip counts of the remaining players were close together and a deal was mentioned. Here's how the chip counts looked as a deal was discussed:

engelberth.v - 687,498
BBOY3110 - 665,148
RynCzechLion - 627,534

A chop with each player receiving $59,202 was proposed amongst the players. However, BOY3110 suggested that each player get $57,000 with the remaining $6,606 given to the winner. This was quickly agreed upon and play continued.

Play resumed with the blinds at 5,000/10,000 with an ante of 1,250 when RynCzechLion decided to go big or go elsewhere. From the small blind, engelberth.v min-raised to 20,000 with [as][jh]. RynCzechLion re-raised to 120,000 with [ac][2s]. This led engelberth.v to move all-in as RynCzechLion called for their tournament life. No more deuces were coming as the board ran out [Ah] [9c] [4h] [6c] [Qh] as RynCzechLion would have to settle with $57,000 for 3rd place.

Heads-up play began with engelberth.v holding a 5-3 chip lead over BBOY3110, which eventually grew to a 6-1 chip advantage. However, BBOY3110 would not give up, taking over the chip lead after this hand played out:

That lead would be short-lived as engelberth.v regained the lead, and again had a 6-1 chip advantage. This time, there was no comeback in the making for BBOY3110. The blinds were now at 7,000/14,000 with an ante of 1,750 as BBOY3110 limped from the small blind. Having none of this limping business, engelberth.v raised to 42,000 as BBOY3110 decided to ship it with their remaining 280,200 chips with [ad][3h]. Engelberth.v called with [qd][js]. The flop was [Qh] [7d] [7s] as engelberth.v took the lead. BBOY3110 was drawing to the three remaining aces, but no help would come as the turn was the [5s] and the river was the [7c] as BBOY3110 earned $57,000 for finishing 2nd, while engelberth.v earned the additional $6,606 set aside for the winner, taking their total to $63,606. This concludes the Super Tuesday tournaments for 2010, but fear not! Super Tuesday will be back next week for more high buy-in tournament action and the PokerStars blog will be there to cover it for you, the reader.

The PCA on five Frequent Player Points

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

PCA-2010-thumbnail.jpgLet's be honest. Going to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is not an experience for budget travelers. It requires a flight to the Bahamas, a room at the high-dollar Atlantis resort, and the buy-in for the event. It all adds up after a while. That's why so many people (688 at this writing) are working to qualify on PokerStars.

Before you run off and hit a satellite however, you should know that no matter what you do, you're unlikely to top the return on investment story of the PokerStars player known as tombala85.

I was perusing the PCA Facebook page today and saw that Mad Harper had posted something pretty fun at the top of the page. She wrote:

Two hundred PokerStars Frequent Player Points will get you a PokerStars window sticker, 300 FPPs will get you a T-shirt and 600 FPPs will get you a floatable PokerStars keychain. But back in August, "tombala85" spent just 5 FPPs entering a Round 1 PCA Mega Path satellite. Back in August, the PCA probably looked a long way away and thousands were entering the various PCA Mega Path satellites on offer. But tombala85 not only got through his Round 1 tourney, he then sailed through a further EIGHT rounds to win his trip to the Bahamas - a prize package worth more than $15,500.

You might want to read that again just to get your head around it. See, tombala was one of thousands of people who played in the Mega Path satellites (a multi-leveled qualifying system of satellite tournaments that start at five FPPs). There were several people who earned their PCA package for just a few FPPs, but no one except tombala85 who qualified for the PCA for the lowest possible amount: 5 FPPs. I don't know the current FPP exchange rate, but it's safe to say tombala85 has qualified for the PCA for less than 10¢.

All of the 30 Mega Path qualifiers will be looking to match or better Darren 'Woodylord' Keyes achievement from 2010. Keyes made it to the PCA after starting in a 75-FPP Round 1 satellite. He worked his way to the top and finished in tenth place for $150,000. His ROI was in the 12 million percent range.

With now less than two weeks until the PCA, your time to qualify is running out. Head on over to the EVENTS / PCA section of the PokerStars lobby and start hitting the satellites soon. There still qualifiers running for as little as $1 or 100 Frequent Player Points.

The Frequent Player Points you spend today could be memories of winning millions by the end of next month.

My New Year’s live poker resolutions

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

ps_news_thn.jpgAs a new decade approaches, poker players around the world will resolve to tilt less, bluff better and check-raise the river more often. This year, I'm going to focus my new year's resolutions on live play. In the flesh, tournaments are pricier and higher variance than multi-tabling online, so mistakes can be costly.

With a little help from pros, I came up with my resolutions just in time for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Ladies Weekend (January 13-17). During that time, I'll be giving my keyboard and mouse a much-deserved rest, and concentrating on live play.

I'll learn to love my table image
Despite playing thousands of online games, I handle my chips like a turtle threading a needle. This combined with being female (many assume women are weaker players until gaining evidence to the contrary) makes me look less experienced than I am. Although this is generally a negative (I'd prefer to be feared), there can also be positives. People assume I play straightforwardly. For instance, if I check raise someone's c-bet, even on a dry board, my opponent is much more likely to think I have a monster. One of these days, I'll achieve that scary image but until then I should tailor my play to fit my image. For instance, I may be able to pick a few good spots to bluff that would not work online.

When bored, I'll count chips instead of sheep
Experienced live pros can instantly size up the number of chips from all stacks at the table. As team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso said on Women's Poker Hour, "There's a lot of talk about what you should do as a short stack, but what's often glossed over, is how can you tell if you're a short stack?" This calculation can be much more challenging in live play since there's no digital display. Although you can always ask a player how many chips she has behind, sometimes you want to know without inquiring. When not in a hand, assessing all the stacks at the table is a much more useful activity that daydreaming about stacking ALL the chips.

I'll exercise my right to remain silent while in a hand
It often makes me feel guilty when an opponent asks me a question in a hand and I ignore him. Of course I shouldn't feel bad. It's not a real conversation; this guy is trying to take my money!

Even though Brazilian Team PokerStars pro Maria Mayrinck is known for her gregarious personality, she doesn't think chatting is for everyone, especially during a big hand. You shouldn't worry about being rude, "It's OK to be silent if you feel that will give any info about your hand. Players understand and will not take it personally." Additionally, Maria advises that if you're worried about giving away information by declaring your chip count, you should just stay mum and let the dealer respond.

I won't care if I look like a super nit
If I'm card-dead for the first few levels of a live tournament, I often loosen up so I don't look like I'm waiting for aces or kings. But why should I care if I look like a super nit? In tournaments, the blinds and antes increase and I don't think it's terrible if people assume I'm tight. Eventually, I'll get aggressive and at that point there will be more at stake. I would find nothing odd or embarrassing about folding a couple levels worth of hands while multi-tabling tourneys online, so why should I mind doing the same live?

Professional poker player Katie Stone, who splits her play between online games and live tournaments, advises online players that, "You see significantly fewer hands per round in a live tournament. Players transitioning from online to live need to be patient and try not to force things - everyone else is seeing the same number of hands as you!"

I'll be realistic about controlling tells
I'm a very expressive person. Asking me to stop making faces is like asking Shaun Deeb to stop three-betting. So instead of worrying about eye movements and breathing patterns that only a psychological whiz can decipher, I resolve to focus on limiting the information I give away by timing tells (the amount of time I think before making a decision) and betting patterns. Maria Mayrinck says that timing tells are "very easy to spot for more experienced players" and recommends "taking the same amount of time to make any bets, raises, call or folds."

As for sunglasses, I'll leave them at the beach from now on. Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst joked in a PokerStars Women interview with Sue Carswell that she doesn't wear sunglasses because: "I think it's sometimes really hard to see what the cards are, and that can really mess your game up." Indeed! I'd much rather give off a constricting pupils tell than miss a four-card flush on board.

I won't talk about my favorite poker games and stakes
When you play online, a lot of players will have notes on you, but if you're not a pro, you'll be unknown to most live players. I'm talkative at live tables, which is fine, but I too often chat about poker. It's better to be vague about poker style and game preferences--for instance, if someone tells me that they play mostly 6-max or heads-up, I can assume they'll be more aggressive from the button. Once at the Ladies World Series of Poker, I told a girl to my left that I was dabbling in short stacking cash games (I have since abandoned this). A few orbits later, I shoved a 20 big blind stack from the small blind with pocket threes and she insta-called with ace-ten, in a situation where I would have preferred to rake in the antes and blinds. She could have called anyway, but in a close situation, my mouth could have been a deciding factor!

PCA Ladies Event defending champ Vanessa Rousso will be teaching a poker camp during the PCA Ladies Weekend. She says that one of the biggest mistakes beginners make in live events is to reveal they qualified online. High stakes players may assume that min-cashing is important to a satellite winner and use that information to abuse him or her on the bubble. Speaking of satellites, you can qualify directly for Vanessa's Ladies Only PCA Big Slick Boot camp in $27 satellites on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 18:00 on the PokerStars clock.

It's also dangerous to get visibly concerned when the bubble approaches. One year in the Ladies World Series of Poker, a tight player to my right talked on and on about how many players were left to cash. She four bet me from middle position. Despite the shallow stacks, I folded jacks pretty quickly, and was not surprised when she flipped over aces.

Looking ahead to the PCA
As my own PCA trip approaches, it's almost time for me to make good on my resolutions. Also preparing for the trip to Atlantis are four freeroll PCA Ladies weekend qualifiers who earned early Christmas presents. They will be dusting off card protectors and packing swimsuits soon to enjoy the Bahamas in January.

Jane Goldberg won the November 28 freeroll hosted by Woman Poker Player Magazine, which boasted the largest field, with over 1500 players. RedDevil Lady won the High Heels Poker Tour event on December 5th, while hirrrvi of Finland earned her spot via the wavejourney.com satellite on December 12th. Finally, on December 13th, 2bulbash2 of Brest, France topped the PCA satellite bar as well.

Congrats to all four, who will all enjoy a $3480 return on their investment of zero dollars. See you in the Bahamas, ladies!

  • pageh656 closes book on 2010, wins 12/26 Sunday Million

    Monday, December 27th, 2010

Sunday Million logo.jpgThe days are running out. Not many more chances to add that one last big score to the 2010 ledger. Such perhaps was the thinking of at least some of those who came out for the final Sunday Million of the year.

The $215 buy-in no-limit hold'em -- the largest weekly tournament in online poker -- attracted a larger-than-average field on Sunday with 8,947 coming out to play. That group together built a total prize pool of $1,789,400, easily exceeding the $1.5 million guarantee. The top 1,350 finishers were due to get paid, with the winner scheduled to see that year-end section of the graph catapult upward a dizzying $255,531.18.

As is generally the case in these Sunday Millions, it took just about four hours for the money bubble to burst. About 40 minutes later, 1,000 players remained, with RBC* out in front, followed by rh300487, gaz09, frtk, and Zackattak13.

Earlier in the afternoon, Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis sent out a tweet saying he was playing the Sunday Million. "Been a while since I played online tournaments," added the Dutch player. "Doing pretty well."

A while later he was tweeting that he'd moved near the top of the chip counts. "If you wanna rail come quick," he said. "Might be out soon."

Well, at the five-hour-and-20 minute mark things were still going pretty well for the player also known as "RaSZi." In fact, they were going about as well as could be, as Veldhuis was sitting in first place with 500 players remaining. Following him at that point were rh300487, RBC*, draiziene, and shipsyy filling out the top five.

    26dec10sundaymillionlexveldhuis.jpg

    Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis

Veldhuis would drop from the top spot, but continued to battle over the next two hours as the field shrunk to 100 players.

By then a couple of Team PokerStars Pros had cashed -- Team Online member Dusty "Leatherass9" Schmidt in 1,316th ($304.19) and Chad Brown of Team PokerStars U.S. in 660th ($483.13) -- but four more Team PS players still remained with chips: Tom McEvoy (United States), Bryan Huang (Singapore), Pat Pezzin (Canada), and Veldhuis (Netherlands).

Of the four, Huang was in the best shape in 18th place, Pezzin sat in 33rd, Veldhuis in 78th, and McEvoy in 94th. Meanwhile, DBL BOGEY101 had moved in the leader's spot, followed by threatnasty, woody1234321, Anita seek, and draiziene.

McEvoy's super-short-stack had put him in the danger zone, but he soon improved his status considerably after doubling up in a hand in which he had pushed all in with [Jd][Jh] and was up against HisJazz's [Ad][Kc]. On that hand a king flopped, but so did a jack. Then the fourth jack appeared on the turn, and the 1983 WSOP Main Event champion suddenly found himself back in the middle of the pack.

Veldhuis was less fortunate, however. The table having folded around to him, Veldhuis open-raised his below-average stack all in from the small blind with [Kh][10h] and tupacmn called, having woken up in the big blind with [Ah][Qd]. Five cards later, Veldhuis was out in 94th place ($1,610.46).

As the tourney crossed the eight-hour mark, the blinds had crept up to 30,000/60,000 when Bart0071 had made a slightly-more-than-2x raise from UTG. It folded back to Bryan Huang who called from the big blind, leaving himself just 205,260. Huang then shoved the [5s][6d][Jc] flop with [Ad][3d], and Bart0071 called with pocket nines. The best hand held, and Huang was out in 57th place ($2,684.10).

Players continued to fall, My Brim Low (49th, $2,952.51), Kroko-dll (42nd, $3,220.92), and mtvdeuem (38th, $3,220.92) among them. The blinds were at 65,000/130,000, when Sembawangboy opened with a minimum-raise from under the gun, then McEvoy pushed all in from the hijack seat for 1,862,493. Anita seku called from the button, and the blinds and Sembawangboy got out. McEvoy had pocket queens and Anita seku [Ac][Kc]. A king flopped, McEvoy couldn't catch a saving queen, and McEvoy was out in 29th place ($3,489.33).

After marcolina went out in 28th ($3,489.33), just three tables remained with Pezzin the lone remaining Team PokerStars Pro in 17th place.

    26dec10sundaymillionpatpezzin.jpg

    Team PokerStars Pro Pat Pezzin

Just after the nine-hour mark they were down to 18, and Pezzin was still hanging on in 18th with a little over 1.1 million -- not quite six big blinds. By then, Anita seku had pushed in front with more than 16.2 million, followed by pageh656 with 12.28 million and Disho with 7.26 million.

A couple of eliminations later, Pezzin committed his stack with [Ac][10c] and was in need of help versus jesus86's [As][Kh]. None came, however, and Pezzin was gone in 16th place ($4,473.50).

A short while after that -- just as the tourney was reaching 10 hours -- jpous eliminated kuller in 10th place ($9,304.88), and the final table was set.

    26dec10sundaymillionft.jpg

    Seat 1: jesus86 -- 6,234,718
    Seat 2: Disho -- 6,691,746
    Seat 3: pageh656 -- 17,184,585
    Seat 4: brianm15 -- 6,956,398
    Seat 5: Dick_Fosbury -- 13,002,761
    Seat 6: Anita seku -- 15,790,235
    Seat 7: F P C -- 15,970,992
    Seat 8: jpous -- 3,704,845
    Seat 9: T8MML -- 3,933,720

On the fifth hand of the final table, brianm15 opened with a minimum-raise to 600,000 from early position, then it folded around to T8MML on the button who pushed all in for 2,933,720. The blinds folded, and brianm15 called, showing [8h][8c] to T8MML's [Qd][Kh]. The board came [7h][Td][5s][9c][4d], and T8MML was quickly out in ninth.

About 10 minutes later the blinds were 200,000/400,000 when Discho open-raised all in from the button for 5,040,969, then chip leader pageh656 reraised all in, forcing a fold from brianm15 in the big blind. pageh656 showed [Ah][8d] and Disho [Jd][5d]. The five community cards came [Th][Qs][6h][Qc][Ac], and Disho was eliminated in eighth.

Six hands later, brianm15 was down to just 652,718 and sitting under the gun. Rather than wait for the blinds, brianm15 pushed all in, then Anita seku reraised to 905,436 from middle position. It folded to pageh656 in the big blind who four-bet to 2,400,500, and Anita seku stepped aside. brianm15 had [Qc][Jc], behind pageh656's [Ah][Js]. The board ran out eight-high -- [3s][8d][5s][5c][2d] -- and brianm15 was gone in seventh.

pageh656 had pushed out further into the chip lead with more than 30 million, more than twice nearest foes jpous and Anita seku, both of whom sat with just under 15 million.

Meanwhile, jesus86 had become the table's short stack with just over 1.5 million when he open-raised all in from the button and got a caller in Dick_Fosbury in the big blind. Dick_Fosbury had [9s][7d], meaning jesus86 was ahead to start with [Js][6h]. But it was a Fosbury flop, bringing a nine while not improving jesus86's hand. The turn and river were no good, either, for jesus86, who was eighty-sixed in sixth place.

Dick_Fosbury would claim the next victim at the final table as well. After opening with a 3x raise to 2.4 million from the button, F P C reraised all in from the big blind for 6,039,492 and Dick_Fosbury called. F P C had [Kc][Qs] and Dick_Fosbury [Jd][9d]. Both made a pair on the [Ad][9c][Ks] flop, but the [Td] turn and [4d] river gave Dick_Fosbury a diamond flush, sending F P C to the rail in fifth.

Just four hands later, pageh656 opened for 1,650,500 from under the gun, and only Anita seku called from the small blind. Both then checked the [7d][Ks][Jc] flop. The turn brought the [7h], pairing the board. Anita seku bet 1.6 million, pageh656 raised to 3,655,500, Anita pushed all in for 14,119,381, and pageh656 called.

Anita seku showed [Kc][Js] for two pair, but pageh656 had [7s][4s] for trip sevens. The [4c] river made it a full house, and Anita seku was out in fourth.

jpous soon proposed a deal, and while Dick_Fosbury said he was open to one, pageh656 said "not quite ready yet." A couple more orbits went by, then pageh656 said he was ready to talk. At that point, pageh656 had 52,250,339, jpous 19,660,690, and Dick_Fosbury 17,558,971. The "chip chop" numbers were proposed -- leaving $30,000 on the table for which to play -- and all three readily agreed.

Play resumed, with Dick_Fosbury scoring a quick double-up through pageh656 with pocket kings versus pageh656's pocket fours. Soon afterwards the tables were turned, however.

With the blinds 400,000/800,000, pageh656 opened from the small blind for 1,900,500, and Dick_Fosbury promptly raised to 6.4 million from the big blind. pageh656 hesitated for several seconds, then shoved all in. Dick_Fosbury thought a while longer, then called with his remaining 23,837,942, tabling [2c][2h], well behind pageh656's [Th][Tc]. The board came [6c][3h][Ah][Qh][5c], and Dick_Fosbury was out in third place.

After claiming that pot worth more than 60 million chips, pageh656 enjoyed a commanding lead to begin heads-up play with 67,889,310 to jpous' 21,580,690. The pair exchanged a few small pots, then, on the eighth hand of heads-up, 11 hours and 15 minutes after the tourney began, the end finally came.

With the blinds up to 500,000/1,000,000 (Level 40), jpous opened with a raise to 2 million from the small blind/button, and pageh656 promptly shoved all in. jpous thought about 10 seconds, then called with [Kd][8d]. pageh656 was behind with [Th][7h], though immediately took the advantage following the [2d][7s][4s] flop. Two cards later -- [Jc] and [2s] -- and the tournament was over.

Turbo Takedown: gmd68 enjoys holiday present winning Audi TT after four-way chop

    Monday, December 27th, 2010

turbo_takedown_thumb.jpgBesides the people in the Lexus commercials with the brand new luxury car wrapped up in a bright red bow out front of their house, there are not many who get a brand new car as a gift for the holidays. There are ways however to make this happen and does not require knocking over a bank, enter the final $1 million Turbo Takedown for 2010 where it cost no monetary funds, just 3,000 Frequent Players Points to set yourself up against 17,012 other players looking to celebrate Boxing Day with a flourish and an Audi TT (ribbon not included). One million dollars would be divided up between 5,000 players and $60,000.00 to tonight's champ.

Despite the $100.00 bulls-eyes on the backs of our Team PokerStars players, a few of them managed to make a little cash themselves this evening after the ironically named luckky6 busted in 5,001st place. Among the team members winning cash, Matthias De Meulder (1951st place, $110.00), JP Kelly (1656th place, $115.00), Veronica "Princesa" Dabul (646th place, $200.00), Joao Nunes (600th place, $200.00). Team Online pro Anders Hoyer "Donald" Berg got the closest to placing that Audi TT in his garage but finished a ways off the final table in 408th place ($260.00).

Fast forwarding to the final ten players, the final table bubble would last nearly an entire blind level as short stacks doubled up and no one wanted to give away the shot at that car and it would take a double elimination to get there. Another blind level nearly went by as the shortstacks stayed alive until two of them went all-in on the same hand. First, chahlala sing his last notes after shoving from UTG with just 702,976 and blinds at 125K/250K ante 25K but holding a decent pocket pair of eights [8h][8s]. luckycrazy29 on the immediate left made the call holding [9c][Ad]. The coin flip would be decided on the flop as an ace would peel off and hold thru the [Js] [Ts] [Ac] [Tc] [Qc] board sending chahlala out in tenth place ($8,000.00). But on the adjacent table, leandroltb would shove 1.23 million chip from the button holding [As][6h] as chilenocl in the small blind covered easily and made the call holding [Kc][Jc]. chilenocl caught fire on the flop by nailing a flush [2c] [Tc] [6c] as leandroltb was drawing dead by the [Qs] turn. Offically leandroltb made the final table, just won't show up on the pretty screen shot below, finishing in ninth place ($10,000.00).

Seat 3: chilenocl (7379830 in chips)

Seat 5: rowang (3032164 in chips)
    Seat 6: luckycrazy29 (10393057 in chips)
    Seat 7: xoriguer458 (2639313 in chips)
Seat 8: NvrMnd (3923721 in chips)
    Seat 9: sporic13 (7235120 in chips)

Nevermind I've gotten better things to do

In the final table's fifth hand with the blinds still at 125K/250K ante 25K NvrMnd tried to take down the blinds quickly by shoving from the small blind for 3.5 million. However, sporic13 covered and snap called after finding big slick [As][Kh]. A dominated [Ac][Jc] for NvrMnd was rooting for a queen after the [2d] [Ts] [Ks] flop. But, the [Tc] turn and [4h] river left NvrMnd looking for other activities on a Sunday night after taking eighth ($12,500.00).

X needs an A to pass

It's not your day when you find big slick and it's behind before the flop even comes out. Check out xoriguer458 journey with big slick below:

Moving up to 175K/350K ante 35K blinds xoriguer458 would raise to 1.05 million from UTG +1 folding to chilenocl on button who side stepped any fancy three-betting numbers and shoved for 6.8 million covering xoriguer458's stack. The blinds folded quickly as xoriguer458 made the call holding a suited big slick [Ks][As]. Usually a powerful hand when it's not facing off against aces or kings. In this case chilenocl held the kings [Kc][Kh] and with a distinct lack of aces on the [Qd] [Qs] [4d] [Tc] [9s] board xoriguer458 was crossed off the final table in seventh place ($15,000.00).

    rowang rowang rowang Rawhide!

As the blinds moved again to 200K/400K ante 40K the players started noticing the jump and decided to become less selective with cut out a certain amount chips and just shoved preflop. gmd however bucked the trends and made a 1.2 million chip raise from the hijack and rowang called all-in from the cutoff for 1.11 million as the blinds folded. Both held an ace but gmd68's [8s][Ah] had the better kicker than rowang's [3s][As]. A pair of nines on the flop offered a ray of hope for a chop, but the [9h] [2d] [9d] [5d] [7h] board did not comply and rowang was put out to pasture in sixth place ($17,500.00).

The "turbo" part of the Turbo Takedown kicks in

The very next hand NasseNøffff was looking to take down the blind and antes by open shoving from the small blind for 1.6 million. chilenocl had plenty to spare with over 11 million chips and made the call holding [6h][Qd]. NasseNøffff turned over two live cards [7d][8s] with hoping of attaching them to the board. Nasse which is slang for a gas mask could not cover the odor of his cards after the [As] [4c] [Td] [2d] [6c] board spilled out and NasseNøffff took leave in fifth place ($20,000.00).

Break out the Excel spreadsheet and formulas for this deal

Chip chopping did not end well so our final four went back to using ICM figures and a little on the side to play for making the deal below:

    gmd68 $37,868.42
    luckycrazy29 $36,845.31
    chilenocl $36,619.31
    sporic $33,667.05

These figures left $5,000.00 for first (plus the Audi TT of course), $3,000.00 for second, $2,000.00 for third, and some late night programming with no added money for fourth.

Crazy part down pat, lucky part, not so much

With the blinds continuing to climb up to blind ceiling of 250K/500K ante 50K, luckycrazy29 fell to just 3.6 million in chips and tried to shove those in from the cutoff to grab the blinds and antes. But, sporic13 made the call with pocket fives [5s][5c] as luckycrazy29 was pleased to see it was a coin flip holding [9s][6s]. A spade-less [2c] [Jh] [Th] [2d] [8c] board rolled out ending luckycrazy29's night with the figures from the chop in the fourth place ($36,845.22).

    sporic sporked

Immediately after doubling up gmd68, sporic13 still had a little more than seven million in chips and raised from the small blind to 1.5 million. Over to the chip leader chilenocl he would shove all-in forcing sporic13 to call for his tournament life. The decision was easier than it sounded as sporic13 rolled over... watch the video below to find out:

RSS readers please click thru to view video

Big slick [Ad][Kh] for sporic13 who needed chips after doubling up gmd68, and a dominated [8h][Ah] for chilenocl. Both would catch an useless ace on the flop, but found the eight on the turn much more interesting [Ac] [6h] [9s] [8d]. Finishing with the [Tc] on the river sporic13 received the extra $2,000.00 from the four-way chop for the third place finish ($35,667.05).

Proud Audi TT owner soon-to-be named

We thought it would be chilenocl after the cards were flipped up after the flop:

But the poker gods say nay. With a flop of [Qc] [6h] [8h] chilenocl pushed out a 3.5 million chip bet and got gmd68 to shove all-in for 18.9 million. Snap call with aces [Ah][Ad] for chilenocl and gmd68 was needing help with [Qd][Jh]. [7h] on the turn and gmd68 lost another out but the [Qs] on the river extended the match as gmd68 took in the 42.9 million chip pot leaving chilenocl with just 8.1 million chips.

    No escape this time

21 minutes after beginning heads-up play and a little more than ten hours after being given their 3,000 starting chips we would have a champion. gmd68 would slyly min raise from the button as chilenocl tried to pounce on the weakness by shoving all-in for 14.5 million chips holding [Qh][As]. It was a set-up for a big cooler however as gmd68 snap called with aces [Ac][Ah]. Unlike when chilenocl was one card away from the Audi TT with aces, this time there was no such sweat down the [5d] [2h] [9h] [8s] [3c] board as gmd68 drove away in the Audi TT with the last 2010 Turbo Takedown victory and $42,868.42!
