Sunday Warm-Up: Redemption for golferen50

Monday, June 28th, 2010
sunday-warmup-thumb.jpgA smaller than average field--see World Series of Poker for likely reason--created a nearly 100k overlaid Sunday Warm-up this weekend; a juicy little bonus for the 3,258 internet ringers that turned up to play. And in spite of both World Series and World Cup action in full swing this past Sunday, a number of your favorite Team PokerStars players posted the $215 entry-fee and took to the virtual felt. EPT regular and PokerStars Team Germany Pro Benjamin Kang carried the PokerStars flag the furthest this week, busting out in an impressive 49th place, good for $1,425. Kang wasn't the lone PokerStars player to make it into the money this Sunday, however. Online Team members Denys "diatty" Shcherbakov (308th for $420) and Martha "marene" Herrera (104th for $1,012.50), and former racing star and current Brazil teamer Gualter Salles (102nd for $1,012.50) managed to join Kang at the virtual payout cage at the end of the day.

Tîmexed out

By the time the Warm-up had gotten down to two tables all eyes were on one screen name, Tîmex. Tîmex, or Mike McDonald as he's known in the three dimensional world, boasts an impressive live and online resume, including five EPT cashes and one win at the 2008 EPT German Open. Yes, Tîmex can mix it up with the best with them, and with just 18 players left yet another Tîmex final table looked assured. Alas for the young Canadian it was not in the cards, as time ran out on McDonald in 12th place ($4,500). Just a few hands later, and we had our final table, with a short stacked bikkles failing to run down naupen07's [Ac] [Qc] with [As] [8s]. Bubble boy bikkles took home $4,500 for his oh-so-close finish, while the remaining nine players took their seats at table 9 for final action.

Seat 1: pececada (4082634 in chips)
Seat 2: naupen07 (4596372 in chips)
Seat 3: golferen50 (3765198 in chips)
Seat 4: Netstorm (3693900 in chips)
Seat 5: jesse6520 (4667382 in chips)
Seat 6: Xamlo (3036942 in chips)
Seat 7: Mrsgardener (1340314 in chips)
Seat 8: croll103 (4995340 in chips)
Seat 9: bigguy1322 (2401918 in chips)

Things were pretty close as the final nine restarted play. croll103 held a slight edge over the field with his 4.99 million chips. However, with six players left holding similar stacks of over three million, the chip lead could shift on any hand. Blinds were 50k/100k with a 10k ante when final table play began.

bigguy Beats Big Slick

With the chip counts so even, it would take some time before the final table's first truly big hand. In a cruel battle of the blinds, bigguy1322 raised from the small blind to 299,999. pececada re-popped the pot to 780k only to have bigguy1322 shove all-in over the top for a little over 3 million. pececada snap called with [Ah] [Kh], which was way ahead of bigguy1322's [Ac] [Jd]. The flop was safe for pececada, [Qd] [4d] [Qs], but the turn brought a dagger, the [Jh]. The [2c] was no help to pececada on the river and he was crippled down to just under 400k. Two hands later pececada found his small stack in the middle with [Kd] [10h] against croll103's [As] [4c]. A ten did fall on the flop but it was accompanied with two fours, giving croll103 trips. No miracle turn or river for pececada and he bowed out in ninth, good for $6,000.

Musical Chips

It has been said that tournament poker can be a roller coaster ride, the swings are sometimes just ridiculous. 49 hands after pececada's exit, a microcosm of this belief played out. First, jesse6520 open shoved all-in from the big blind for just over 3 million after naupen07 had limped from the cutoff. naupen07 made the call with [Kd] [Qd], putting his 2.3 million chip stack at risk against jesse6520's [Ah] [3c]. An ace-high flop kept the lead with jesse6520, but two diamonds also in the first three cards meant things were far from over. Ding! Diamond on the turn locked the double-up for naupen07, crippling jesse6520. Just one hand later, the now chip rich naupen07 stumbled back down the chip ladder, when his [9c] [9s] ran into Mrsgardener's [Ac] [Ad], all-in on a seven-high flop. Despair was short lived for naupen07, however, for just two hands later he pushed all-in under-the-gun with [7h] [7s] and was called by a still short jesse6520. jesse6520 was looking for revenge with a dominating [9c] [9s], but a seven on the flop skyrocketed naupen07 ahead. Blanks on both the turn and river eliminated jesse6520 in eighth ($9,375) and nearly doubled a certainly dizzy naupen07.

X Out Xamlo

In less than half the hands it took the final table to get from eight down to seven, another elimination meant we were down to six. With blinds at 100k/200k and a 20k ante, golferen50 raised to 410k from middle position. Xamlo moved all-in over the top for 2.8 million from the cutoff seat. golferen50 called with [Jd] [Js] and we were off to the races when Xamlo revealed his holdings, [Ac] [Kd]. Drama ensued, as a [Jc] [4d] [10h] flop gave a set to golferen50 and a gut shot straight draw to Xamlo. All drama was killed on the turn when a second ten fell, filling golferen50 up. A meaningless third ten came on the river, eliminated Xamlo in seventh ($16,875) and golferen50 vaulted into the chip lead with over 8 million chips.

Crolling Rolling... on

Entering the final table with the chip lead, croll103 was unable to get much going at the final table and eventually made his exit in fifth, with help from bigguy1322. Action was folded around to croll103 in the cutoff, who moved all-in for 3.1 million. bigguy1322, on the button, followed croll103's example and moved his 3.7 million chip stack into the middle. The blinds folded and croll103 was heads-up for his tournament life with [Ah] [Jh] versus bigguy1322's [Ad] [Ks]. The board, although pretty and connected, ran dry for croll103, [As] [10c] [4s] [Kc] [6c], and the former leader was out in sixth ($24,375).

Suuuuited

naupen07, as previously indicated, had quite the roller coaster day. However, not long after the blinds were raised to 125k/250k with a 25k ante, naupen07 was in desperate need for a double-up, having just 1.7 million in chips. naupen07 decided to make his stand with [10h] [8h] in the big blind, after golferen50 had doubled the blinds in first position. golferen50 made the call and showed-down [Kh] [Qd]. The flop couldn't have been much worse for naupen07's [10h] [8h], falling [Kd] [2s] [3c]. The [5h] and [9h] came on the turn and river, respectively, leaving naupen07 one heart short of a victory. The roller coaster ended with a fifth place finish for naupen07, $31,875 being his consolation prize.

Redemption?

Early this year, February 7 to be exact, golferen50 came as close as you can to sweet victory without ever getting a true taste, finishing second in the Sunday Million. Now, with just four left, golferen50 was in position to redeem his second with a big win in the Warm-up. Of course three other, very capable players stood in golferen50's way of the promised land.

With four left and the blinds at 125k/250k with a 25k ante here is how the final stacks looked:

Seat 3: golferen50 (10385905 in chips)
Seat 4: Netstorm (6374122 in chips)
Seat 7: Mrsgardener (8503496 in chips)
Seat 9: bigguy1322 (7316477 in chips)

Chop it up... please?

Once the final table got down to four the chat box became flooded with deal discussions. Eventually, PokerStars pro moderator Pieter De Korver was asked to pause the action so negotiations could intensify. And oh how they intensified, discussions over a deal ran the gamut from a strict chip-chop to a four-way even split. A stalemate was reached, and De Korver was forced to restart the tournament before anything could be solidified. Once more, play commenced while the chat box filled with deal discussions. Finally, a second break was agreed upon and a deal was made, leaving $10,000 on the table for the eventual winner.

golferen50: $86,000
Netstorm: $71,500
Mrsgardener: $71,500
bigguy1322: $71,500

Stormy Times for Netstorm

Not long after a deal was struck, the final four got down to a simple trio. bigguy1322 raised 666,666 on the button and, after a fold from golferen50 in the small blind, Netstorm pushed all-in from the big blind with just under 5 million. bigguy1322 made the call, showing [Kh] [Qc]. Netstorm was in trouble with [Kd] [Jh], needing a jack to stay alive. No funny business on the flop, [3d] [10s] [5d], or the turn, [4h], or the river, [10d], and Netstorm was sent home in fourth with $71,500, almost $30,000 more than he would have received with the normal payouts.

Not Big Enough

With Mrsgardener and golferen50 in a virtual tie for first, bigguy1322 found himself lagging behind and in need of a big pick-up. bigguy1322's big chance came a few orbits after Netstorm's exit. bigguy1322 opened for roughly 612k on the button and was raised to 1.675 million by golferen50 in the small blind. Mrsgardener got out of the way and bigguy1322 pushed all-in for his last 7 million. golferen50 called and turned-up [9s] [9h]. bigguy1322 had an over, but was behind with [Ad] [4d]. The flop was devastating to bigguy1322, [Qs] [2s] [6s], giving golferen50 a flush draw. The [4c] on the turn gave bigguy1322 one more out, but alas it was not to be for the big fella, as the [Qc] came on the river. bigguy1322 took home $71,500 for his deep run and with his exit the tournament now entered its final stage, heads-up.

Bridesmaid Turned Bride

golferen50 entered heads-up play with a comfortable 20 million to 12 million chip lead over Mrsgardener, but with the blinds at 150k/300k and a 30k ante Mrsgardener's 40 big blind stack was far from out of it. The match had the potential to be a long one, but just 18 hands after bigguy1322's elimination a major confrontation arose. golferen50 raised to 800k on the button, which was quickly called by Mrsgardener. The flop came down [Ad] [6d] [4d] and Mrsgardener checked to the bettor. golferen50 bet out another 800k only to have Mrsgardener move all-in for 9.9 million total. golferen50 snap called and showed [4c] [4h] for a flopped set of fours. golferen50's hand was a monster heads-up, but Mrsgardener was far from dead with her [Kd] [9h] for the nut flush draw. The turn brought a blank, the [Jc], but the river brought a diamond... the [Jd] giving Mrsgardener her flush but golferen50 a full house.

golferen50.JPG
And just like that, Mrsgardener is eliminated in second ($71,500), golferen50 redeems his previous Sunday runner-up with a victory and takes down the rather nice sum of $96,000.

Turbo Takedown: Hikkespett drives away with the Audi TT

Monday, June 28th, 2010

turbo_takedown_thumb.jpgThe monthly $1 Million Turbo Takedown is a very simple concept. Enter with 3,000 frequent players points earned through the various qualifiers or rack them up through SnG, MTT, and cash game play and just take down 15,402 players to drive away with $60,000 and a brand new Audi TT. Simple concept, plus added bonuses of cashing in consecutive months and busting our own Team PokerStars pros like Thierry van den "BOKPOWER" Berg, Andres "lobojiji" Alisievicz, Andre "aakkari" Akkari, Alvaro "VARICO" Blanco, Raymond Wu, Joep can den "Pappe_Ruk" Bijgaart all managed to drop off their bounties without cracking the top 5,000 places which took home at least $78.00 this evening.

Team PokerStars Pros Anders "Donald" Berg, André Coimbra, Victor Ramdin, Tae Joon Noh, Boumaaza "Chiren80" Bachir, Martha "marene" Herrera, Randy "nanonoko" Lew, and Nuno Coelho did manage to slide past enough players to get into the money before dropping off their $100.00 pro bounties.

Down to ten players and one more elimination from the final table, Klimbo would try to slide a small stack shove of 698,944 chips past the well, mountainous stack of MountainRo$e holding [Ts][Ks]. Pocket aces [Ac][Ah] held by the big stack were more than enough on the [5c] [8h] [2h] [Td] [8s] board as Klimbo would be left off the final table as tonight's bubble boy ($8,000.00) setting up the remaining nine below:

TurboTake062710.jpg

Seat 1: Johan 80 (1147996 in chips)
Seat 2: MountainRo$e (8695816 in chips)
Seat 3: wcsquad3 (10374473 in chips)
Seat 4: julik36 (2441088 in chips)
Seat 5: Bjorn-Erik "Hikkespett" Glenne (7624117 in chips)
Seat 6: Cornelius110 (4556667 in chips)
Seat 7: byoon (3938304 in chips)
Seat 8: orgi3000 (2504270 in chips)
Seat 9: Snow in June (4923269 in chips)

No boom for byoon

Right out of the gate Johan 80 would try to improve on a fairly short stack with just 1.1 million in chips and blinds at 70K/140K ante 14K by push preflop on the first hand of the final table. Luckily or unluckily Johan 80 would split the pot after being called by Hikkespett and both turning up Ace-Ten for a split pot. One orbit later Johan 80 would take the back seat and watch a painful cooler come down. byoon would start the hand with a raise to 308,880 UTG as julik36 pumped it up to 1.26 million on the button. Folded back to byoon who shoved for 3.5 million holding big slick [Ks][As] which paled to the mighty aces held by julik36 [Ac][Ad] who covered and made the call. No kings nor straights or flushes came down the [3h] [7h] [8d] [Qd] [9c] board and byoon was booted in ninth place ($10,000.00).

Two smalls do not equal a medium

Most the time at a carnival if you're lucky enough to win two small prizes they will "upgrade" your win to a medium. Two small stacks tried combining their stacks together with hopes to improve their chances on winning. orgi3000 with just 539,771 chips would shove over the top of Hikkespett raise, but instead caught the interest of Johan 80 who was only sitting on 1.4 million and also shoved causing Hikkespett to abandon ship. Pocket jacks [Js][Jh] for Johan 30 and a naked suited ace for orgi3000 [As][3s]. The board stayed ace-free [5d] [Kc] [3h] [9c] [5s] and Johan 30 took the 1.6 million chip pot as orgi3000 folded in eighth place ($12,500.00).

Let it snow let it snow let it snow

Johan 30's run as the final table short stack would finally come to an end but not after moving a few ticks up the pay scale. Watch Johan 30's final hand against Snow in June play out below:

RSS readers click through to see replay

Bit of a cooler for Johan 30 after making this far on fumes, his pocket tens [Tc][Td] could not overcome the pocket jacks [Jd][Jh] of Snow in June on the [2s] [Qc] [8d] [9s] [3c] board and Johan 30 would take home $15,000.00 in seventh place as Snow in June found 6.3 million tournament chips heading into his stack.

Blizzard of chips

Shortly after knocking out Johan 30 and the blinds moving up to 90K/180K ante 18K, Snow in June was at it again making a min-raise preflop into julik36's big blind who would make the call. [Qd] [5d] [4c] flop came down as julik36 checked and Snow in June followed-through with a 540,000 bet that was called. [7d] got julik36's attention as he pushed for 1.7 million holding [6c][7s] and Snow in June made the call with pocket jacks [Jd][Jc]. An unnecessary diamond would hit the river [2d] as the jacks were enough to eliminate julik36 in sixth place ($17,500.00).

Mountainous bluff for mountainous pot

Five handed play lasted all the way to the 125K/250K ante 25K blind level when MountainRo$e and wcsquad3 got tangled in a hand with betting on every street. Watch the huge bluff by MountainRo$e on the river below:

RSS readers click through to see replay

With the board reading [Jd] [5h] [Jh] [Qs] [3c] and 5.7 million already in the pot, MountainRo$e tried to lead out by shoving for almost 4.7 million with just ace high [Ad][2d]. Unfortunately, wcsquad3 covered and flopped trips [Kc][Jc] and was going nowhere except to claim the 15.1 million chip pot thus reducing the field to four as MountainRo$e was done in fifth place ($20,000.00).

$1,000 = Table for four

After a very lengthy conversation and $1,000 being sent from the chip leading Cornelius110 to wcsquad3 our final four had the deal listed below:

Cornelius110: $45,624.18
Hikkespett: $41,351.59
wcsquad3: $34,777.19
Snow in June: $33,247.04

Snow melts in June

Shortly after the poker host restarted the tournament the final four got down to the winner fairly quickly. First, it was Snow in June who got into preflop betting war with Hikkespett and got his remaining 3.6 million chips into the middle holding [Ks][Jh] as Hikkespett would turn over the dominating big slick [Ad][Kh]. No frozen suckout cards would find their way onto the [2c] [2h] [8c] [6h] [8s] board and Snow in June's chips evaporated into Hikkespett's stack finishing in fourth place ($33,247.04).

Up against the firing squad

Just five hands later with blinds moving up to 150K/300K ante 30K wcsquad3 would find two raises ahead of him and pocket jacks [Jd][Jh] sitting by his stack. The answer was to shove for 6.4 million as Hikkespett gave up the initial raise and Cornelius110 snap called with pocket kings [Ks][Kc]. Again, the board [4s] [6s] [2d] [5s] [2c] complied with a non-stressful run for the preflop leader as Cornelius110 raked in the 13.5 million chips to set up heads-up play. wcsquad3 took down the $34,777.19 received from the chop as the race for the car was starting up.

This is his car you are playing for

While the players had fairly deep stacks 29.3 million for Hikkespett and 16.8 million for Cornelius110 and blinds at 175K/300K ante 30K, the heads-up play for the AudiTT would only last 17 hands. Hand number 12 was a big blow to Cornelius110's stack after catching trips on the river [Ac] [9d] [Tc] [Qs] [Ts] holding [Td][7h] and making a value raise to 9.45 million, Hikkespett would just call and flip over the turned broadway straight [Jd][Ks] good for the 25.2 million chip pot. And true on his prediction that the others were playing for his car, Hikkespett made good on that foresight five hands later. The gap was now 41.4 million to 4.7 million and after a min-raise from Cornelius110 with a call by Hikkespett watch the final hand plays out below:

RSS readers click through to see replay

Top pair [9c][Qh] was good for Hikkespett as he faded the second pair of Cornelius110 holding [5d][7s] on the final [7d] [Qs] [3s] [3d] [4c] board sending Cornelius110 home with $45,624.18 from the chop and Bjorn-Erik "Hikkespett" Glenne has one Audi TT coming his way after winning this month's $1 Million Turbo Takedown!

Battle of the Planets: Deja vu all over again, nine way chop of final table money

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

BOP_thumbnail.jpgHearing stories of fatigue at the World Series of Poker as players talk about multi-tabling two tournaments must send a chuckle to 375 players entered in today's Battle of the Planets $50,000 Triple Shootout freeroll. To acquire the ticket to today's fun and have a shot at the $12,000 first prize these Sit and Go kings and queens most likely played between four and 24 SnG at a time catching just right combination of wins and points for their seats. Team PokerStars pro Joep van den "Pappe_Ruk" Bijgaart and Grayson "spacegravy" Physioc cashed in their tickets today, but fell short of the money finishing 148th and 161st respectively.

Due to the mostly short-handed tables we were able to move into the money spots (81 places) in just a shade over an hour. Down to the last heads-up match between ToM RoX 420 and a shortstacked mackuly the rest of the tables laid eyes on table 67 to finish. With just 772 chips and blinds at 125/250 ante 25 mackuly would shove from the button holding [Jd][Tc] as ToM RoX 420 found a pair of ducks [2c][2d] and made the call. Both would hit the [3s] [Jh] [2h] flop, but ToM RoX 420's set of twos all but shut out the top pair of mackuly. After the [7d] dropped on the turn ToM RoX 420 was sent to the next round of the shootout as our final 81 were assured $195.00 for winning their tables.

Setting up the final table

Team PokerStars pros André Coimbra was back in the money this month after taking down nearly $4K last month. But, could not duplicate his final table feat and finished in 77th place. Fellow Team PokerStars pro Martha "marene" Herrera would also win her first table taking $195.00 from the freeroll in 51st place. yBbl_Huli and tschebe8 however had no issues in advancing quickly to the final table. Down to two tables left markux would finish off Homeplaya5! who unlike his victorious German national team in the World Cup today will not be advancing. Table nine would set the stage for the final player to advance as caprioli and BagClip2005 had nearly even stacks throughout heads-up play. Shortly after the hourly break caprioli would quickly double up with queens and eight hands later with blinds at 300/600 ante 50 BagClip2005 would shove for 4,116 chips holding [Ah][5c] as caprioli covered by 5K and made the call with [Qh][8h]. Ace-high was looking good by the turn [3s] [Jc] [Tc] [4d] but a [9s] would fall on the river to caprioli a straight and the last seat to the triple shootout final table.

Quickest $4K these players have ever made

Wow, in a case of déjà vu from last week, once again the players immediately went to deal-making mode after the normal congratulations to the final table message appeared. HostAdriana was gracious enough to pause the tourney and run down the final chop numbers. Just a McDonald's happy meal less than $4,000.00 (or $3995.55 for those without kids) was available for players. Eight of the nine players readily agreed to the chop as caprioli took a little extra time before accepting the even chop.

Unlike last week the players had no desire to play this one out and immediately shoved on the next hand watch the eight-way all in fest below:

tschebe8's [7c][Js] would notch together two running cards on the [Tc] [Ad] [4h] [9h] [8s] to take out the majority of the table with the 11,645 chip pot. Just caprioli and kypux had chips left over for the second running of the cards as tschebe8 had the only diamond [4d][Qs] on the sparkly [6d] [Ad] [Qd] [9d] [5c] final board to take the remaining 3,570 chips off the table to become the official June Battle of the Planets champion.

ukiptthumb.JPGFemi Fakinle has won the UKIPT Killarney for €63,400 keeping the second Irish tour date title on home soil beating a 253-strong field in the process. The Wexford man had led the final table from the front starting the day with 1m chips, some 400,000 more than Peter Barrable in second place, and he almost always had the look of a man that was going to win. He did, however, relinquish his grip on the top spot several times towards the back end of the tournament but that we'll come to shortly.

ukipt killarney_day 4_winner.jpg

Fakinle set out his stall early and that stall was labelled with a big sign saying 'Fakinle's Shop - we're ready to help you play big pots.' He personally knocked out Mike Hill in 8th (€7,425), Philip Phu in 7th (€9,600), Peter Barrable in 4th (€17,700) and, of course, Aonghus Farrell in 2nd (€39,200). He got it in good against Hill with queens against tens, for a flip against Barrable and with a [as][ts] suckout against Phu's shortstacked [ah][qs]. Farrell was not so easy to finish off and huge chip swings took place between the two Irishman when the action broke three-handed.

ukipt killarney_day 4_jens schmukal.jpg

Jens was left celebrating a painful impressive win by Germany and €29,000 cash

A mention should be made for the great performance from Jens Schmukal. Alongside Fakinle he was, somewhat predictably, the other final table axeman. The German seemed to be following in his national football side's strategy of appearing out of nowhere and smashing shots home. Schmukal scored two important goals with the knockouts of David Rowley in 6th (€12,100) and Brian Downey in 5th (€14,600). Two big flips were presented to him and he converted both. That's German efficiency for you. Unfortunately Schmukal couldn't quite cross that final hurdle and finished with third place honours . Quite frankly, it would have been horrific had he won here given how Germany had knocked out England in the World Cup. No-one is allowed to have that good of a day.*

* We freely admit bias in this case as English bloggers. Jens seemed to be an exceptionally nice guy and we hope to see him at future events. Well played, sir.

ukipt killarney_day 4_runner up.jpg

Aonghus Farrell made an incredible comeback but couldn't quite keep Fakinle down

UKIPT Killarney runner-up Aonghus Farrell had started the day fairly short but an early double up helped him make an epic comeback that almost saw him claim the title for his own. After returning from the break the shortest three-handed he embarked on a one-man mission to destroy Fakinle (maybe it was something to do with the fact that he had position on him...). It came as little surprise to Fakinle that Farrell was the thorn in his side,.'Aonghus was the player I was most worried about at the start of the final table. Once he doubled up I knew he'd be trouble and he certainly got the better of me in the early and middle stages,' explained the champ.

Fakinle had been a little guilty of the old win-lots-of-small-pots-blow-up-in-the-big-pots syndrome and none more so than in this hand. Three-handed Fakinle opened from the button at 10,000-20,000 blind level and was raised by Farrell in the small blind to around 200,000. Fakinle called and then shoved all-in over Farrell's 300,000 lead on a [3h][2s][9d] flop. Farrell, who only had another 600,000 behind, called with [tc][ts] absolutely crushing Fakinle's pocket sixes.

After that Fakinle fell back on his small pot talents, where he seemed to have a real edge, before going for the big all-in knockout punch. There were a couple of swings but eventually Fakinle's [js][qd] rivered two-pair against Farrell's [kh][8h] top pair to rapturous applause. In the aftermath of his victory Fakinle told us, 'I'm over the moon but I'm most excited about the fact I've won a seat to the EPT London, the chance to play against some of the best players in the world is something I'm looking forward to.' That, ladies and gentlemen, is the attitude of a winner.

ukipt killarney_day 4_final eight.jpg

Mike Hill (second right) is at the forefront of the UKIPT leaderboard charge

Now today could be seen by some as a little bit of a disappointment for Mike Hill who was the first casualty of the final table. Not so, he told us. His tournament aim had been to finish 21st or higher as he knew that would take him above Chris Brammer on the UKIPT leader board so anything higher than that was a bonus - a €7,425 bonus as it goes. Fakinle's success here in Killarney will boost him into the top twenty and another deep run could see him challenge the likes of Hill and Chris Brammer for a lucrative leaderboard finish too. Importantly for Irish pride that is two from two for Ireland-based UKIPT events. Padraig Parkinson managed to keep the UKIPT Galway title this side of the stream and Fakinle has repeated that feat. Will Irish eyes still be smiling in Dublin? Join us to find out September 9-12 for the UKIPT Dublin . UKIPT Brighton takes place July 15-19 and is the next stop on the tour. Satellites are running now on PokerStars.com.

UKIPT Killarney: The final table, levels 25&26 (blinds 20,000-40,000)

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPG9.10pm: Femi Fakinle wins the UKIPT Killarney
Farrell open shoves from the button and Fakinle makes the call. It's a race (unsurprisingly).

Fakinle: [js][qd]
Farrell: [kh][8h]

It looked like a tournament saving double up for Farrell when he flopped [kd][5s][6c] but the running turn and river cards of [qc] and [jh] pulled Fakinle into the lead with two pair making him the UKIPT Killareny winner bagging the Wexford man €63,400, entry into the £5,000 UKIPT Grand Final, the EPT London, and a bloody great big crystal trophy. He also gets entry into the UKIPT Dublin for being the last PokerStars qualifier standing. Well played to Aonghus Farrell who walks away with €39,200. --RD

9pm: Back from the break
Aonghus Farrell raised to 100,000 from the button and Femi Fakinle called. Both players checked the [Kd][Js][3d] flop. The turn was the [7h] and Fakinle check-called a bet of 150,000. Both players checked the [2d] river and Fakinle showed [Jh][8c] to win the pot. Farrell now has around 600,000 left. --NW

WSOP Diary Day 31: Soccer sickness infects Rio as World Series pauses for World Cup

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

wsop2010_thn.jpgIn Europe and Latin America, the world has always stood still for what we call football. If the national team is playing in a major tournament, you can forget about a quiet drink in London or Buenos Aires and you'll wait an age for your room-service in Rio.

For perhaps the first time, similar soccer fever has infected the United States this summer as the World Cup in South Africa suddenly tapped in to the otherwise impenetrable American sports' psyche. It's helped that the US team had been involved in three of the competition's best matches: an heroic tie against England, a bullish comeback against Slovenia and then a dramatic victory over Algeria thanks to an injury-time goal.

The national appetite had been whetted and expectations were therefore high for a round-of-16 match against Ghana yesterday, which kicked off at 11.30am World Series of Poker time (WSOPT). That was just as the masses were gathering for the latest $1,000 no limit hold 'em event, which started at noon.

soccer_fans_during_wsop.jpg

Soccer fans pause to watch the World Cup in the Pavilion Room

It was immediately apparent that something of the cold air of a South African winter had blown through the desert of Las Vegas. People were chattering about soccer like never before, and in the Amazon and Pavilion Rooms, there were as many screens showing the soccer match as there were showing the tournament clock. "Great view of the #worldcup game from table 108 seat 8" tweeted the Team PokerStars Pro Gavin Griffin as both the match and the poker got under way.

It was a unique couple of hours in World Series history. Poker railbirds, usually bending the ropes to get close to the tables, were instead halted in the middle of the walkways, their heads craned upwards to watch the screens. They saw the United States ship another early goal: Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng drilling the ball low past Tim Howard in the USA net. The room groaned together at a familiar failing.

But when Clint Dempsey was fouled to give the United States a penalty kick, some marginal hands were quickly folded so their keepers could watch Landon Donovan step up to put the game level again. The roar was as though the bubble had burst in the Main Event.

As the clock ticked down (in the football, that is), the score was still tied and they headed into overtime. By now, of course, a handful of poker players' days were already over. They had 3,000 starting chips and that's sometimes not enough to last more than about 60 minutes. All the more freedom to watch the soccer.

But it all started to go wrong in the football too. Ghana scored again, putting them 2-1 ahead, and the United States again had to pull off the kind of out-draw they had been managing almost daily in the group stages. In poker terms, their chances with 15 minutes left were about the equivalent of hitting an up-and-down straight draw. At five minutes to go, they were now sitting with an underpair and were all in. As the clock hit 120 minutes, they were hoping for another miracle one outer.

For a moment, it seemed as though it had hit. A player in the white section leapt from his seat to celebrate, but was quickly silenced by scowls. He had been watching a replay of Donovan's earlier goal - the equivalent of rivering a straight with the card that gives your opponent a flush.

With just seconds left in the match, I passed by Griffin's table. With one eye on the screen, he limped from late position, then checked a flop of [ac][5h][7d]. His opponent bet 175, Griffin raised to 450, his opponent shoved. In a microcosm of what was happening on the pitch, Griffin folded disconsolately. His heart wasn't in it. The game was up.

gavin_griffin_2500_mixed.jpg

Gavin Griffin

"1425 first break, USA lost, and Gloria Balding called me Gavin Smith, doubt things could be going worse today..." Griffin tweeted soon after. But it would get worse very quickly: Griffin bust.

The United States' - and the World Series' - brief flirtation with soccer was over for another four years. But today they'll really get to see what mourning is about: England were thrashed by Germany, so look out for the very long faces on anyone with an English accent.

NEWBIES

Simon Young wrote a week or so ago about Peter Eastgate's decision to sit out the early stages of the World Series in order to watch the World Cup from his home in London. He was following his native Denmark, but even the support of a world champion couldn't help them out the group stages. Japan dealt them the final blow.

Although we're still waiting for Eastgate to hop on a plane to Vegas, his countryman Allan Baekke, a dominant EPT force last season, arrived from Copengagen. Baekke, the champion at Snowfest who followed up with a deep run in San Remo, will be a certain force in the WSOP too.

There was also a notable influx of Italian to the Rio this weekend. Like Denmark, Italy went out of the World Cup with a whimper, and that was probably all the encouragement Luca Pagano and Salvatore Bonavena needed to flee the country. Both made their World Series debuts in the $1,500 no limit event on Friday - and both emulated their football-playing countrymen by busting in the first round.

Unlike the World Cup, the World Series offers second, third and fourth chances, and so both were back in the action today. Pagano played the $2,500 mixed game and Bonavena went into the $1,000 no limit event. Bonavena is the latest addition to Team PokerStars Pro Italy, signed up in time for his trip to Nevada, bringing with him a good run of results from the EPT.

salvatore_bonavena_1000nlhe.jpg

Welcome to the team: Salvatore "El Bona" Bonavena

Bonavena won EPT Prague in season four, then picked up two major titles in Italy including a victory on the IPT. He then finished 11th in this year's EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. It was about time he made it to the team.

Yesterday we also had our first sighting of the Team PokerStars Pros Marcin Horecki and Vadim Markushevski. Their late arrivals were probably not football related (neither Horecki's Poland nor Markushevski's Belarus qualified for the World Cup) but it's good to finally have them here.

vadim_markushevski_1000nlhe(2).jpg

Vadim Markushevski

Markushevski played in the $1,000 event, while Horecki joined Pagano in the "eight-game" tournament. That particular event tests eight disciplines and attracted a predictably star-studded field.

Going through to day two are: George Danzer (4,100), Marcel Luske (5,500), Juan Maceiras (6,800), Sebastian Sabic (7,500), JP Kelly (7,500), Pat Pezzin (8,200), Horecki (8,500), Jason Mercier (9,700), Dario Minieri (11,000), Bill Chen (11,000), Daniel Negreanu (12,500), Griffin (13,000), Nacho Barbero (20,400), Michael Keiner (23,000), Alex Kravchenko (37,000) and Pagano (48,100).

Meanwhile in the two hold 'em events progressing yesterday, Fatima Moreira de Melo and Veronica Dabul earned another small cash each, while the French Team PokerStars Pro Thomas Bichon bagged up 264,000 and is in the last 35 players remaining from the 3,097 who started.

Thomas Bichon

Up near the summit of the leaderboard in that event is Stephen Chidwick, the PokerStars satellite dynamo better known as "stevie444". Chidwick has qualified for more WSOP events online than perhaps any other player, but he's actually appearing at his first series having only recently turned 21. He has now secured his second cash.

stephen_chidwick_1500nlhe.jpg

Stephen "stevie444" Chidwick

Another word too about Barry Greenstein. After going so close to the final table in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split a few days ago, Greenstein was back in the saddle in the $5,000 version of that variation. Again it was a deep run, but again he came up a touch short. Greenstein took $11,479 for 24th place.

TAKING STOCK OF THE CASHES

The 2010 World Series is a month old today. There's been action every day for the past 31 and 44 bracelets have been handed over, with uncountable (at least by anyone with anything else to do today) millions of dollars changing hands.

No one can deny it's been a tough start for Team PokerStars Pro. The nature of poker in all its variants, as well as the many thousands of top players these days, means that no one can guarantee victories for even the best.

However, there have been some notable performances to celebrate, so here's a quick breakdown of how Team Pro have fared at the WSOP this year. And when you take a look at the length of this list, you'll probably notice that it's hardly been disastrous:

  • UKIPT Killarney: The final table, levels 22,23&24 (blinds 15,000-30,000, ante 3,000)

    Sunday, June 27th, 2010

    ukiptthumb.JPG8.55pm: Break time
It's a 15-minute break and a much, much needed colour up of chips. Why it wasn't done at the dinner break is beyond me. The players have been having to reach round huge stacks of redundnant yellow 1,000 demonination chips. It must be some EU statute. --RD

    8.45pm: Walkies!
There has been a few walks as both Farrell and Fakinle dance around each other looking for good spots to get it in. There have been some huge swings at this final table and a double from short stacked Farrell would almost bring things back level. --RD

8.35pm: And Fakinle doubles through Farrell
They've both being dealt hands here and it's all gone in again.

    Farrell: [4h][4c]
    Fakinle: [qc][qd]

Farrell failed to catch his four letting Fakinle take a huge 2.8m lead over Farrell's 900,000. Farrell is looking like he's been put through the wringer. --RD

    ukipt killarney_day 4_broken farrell.jpg

Farrell has dropped below the 1m mark

    8.35pm: Farrell doubles through Fakinle
Femi Fakinle opened to 87,000 from the button and was three-bet to 330,000 by Aonghus Farrell. Fakinle moved all-in and was snap called by Farrell.

    Fakinle: [Ks][10c]

    Farrell: [Ad][Ah]

The board a decisive [6c][3d][2s][As][8s] Farrell was all-in for 1,172,000 and he is now the chip leader. --NW

8.30pm:This is unlikely to be a long heads up
As UKIPT host Nick Wealthall just said, 'This could be a long heads up as long as you change the players and the history between them.' Quite. It's all raise/shove/call at the moment. -- RD

    8.20pm:All-in and call!
Farrell opened the button for 100,000 and Fakinle insta-shoved all-in. Farrell made a a big call.

    Farrell: [ac][9c]
    Fakinle: [as][td]

The flop smashed Fakinle in the face with trips tens on a [ts][th][qc] board leaving Farrell drawing very thin. Blank cards in the form of [6h][4c] changed nothing and Fakinle doubled up to 2.6m. Farrell is now the short stack with 1.15m. --RD

8.05pm:Jens Schmukal eliminated in third place winning €24000
Femi Fakinle opened to 80,000 on the button and Aonghus Farrell re-raised to 255,000 from the small blind, only for Jens Schmukal to announce all-in from the big blind for approximately 725,000. Fakinle made a quick call and Farrell a fast fold.

    Fakinle: [Qd][Qs]
    Schmukal: [As][Kh]

It was a classic race but in about the only thing that hasn't got well for Germany today, Schmukal couldn't hit an ace or king on the [3s][2h][9h][7s][8d] board. Schmukal shook hands and wished the two remaining players good luck. --NW

    ukipt killarney_day 4_jens out.jpg

    Well played, Germany

8pm: Jens Schmukal out in 3rd
German Schmukal was unable to make it a German double victory today and bottomed out in 3rd. Details to come.

    8pm: Internet problems
Sorry, folks. Major internet problems here.

6.50pm: Play ends for a little while
    Dinnner break for 45-minutes.

6.50pm: Aces up good for Femi
Femi Fakinle raised to 72,000 from the small blind and was called by Aonghus Farrell in the big blind. Both the flop and turn were checked by both players, but with the full board reading [As][Qc][9h][6s][6c] Fakinle finally fired, betting 115,000. Farrell elected to call and Fakinle showed [Ad][3s] to win the pot. --NW

6.45pm: Fakinle right back in the action
Femi Fakinle wasted little time in getting some of his chips back, three betting Jens Schmukal's bet of 60,000 to 170,000 and forcing the German to fold. --NW

6.40pm: And here's that massive pot!
And it's a very, very weird one. Farrell made it 56,000 and Fakinle three-bet to 220,000. Farrell responded by four-betting to 400,000. Fakinle made the call putting approaching half of his stack in out of position. Both players checked the [ad][5h][5c] flop and Farrell waited for the [ks] turn to bet 500,000. Farrell showed pocket threes. What a bizarre hand. --RD

6.25pm: Farrell wins battle of the blinds
From the small blind Aonghus Farrell made it 72,000 to play, a bet Jens Schmukal elected to call. Both players checked the [10h][10c][5s] flop. Farrell fired 100,000 on the [6h] turn, which was enough to make Schmukal fold. Play has definitely slowed down in the last 30 minutes. Cue a massive pot no doubt! --NW

6.20pm: Fakinle picks up another... and Schmukal gets a walk!
Schmukal raised to 50,000 on the button and was called by both opponents. Fakinle led 101,000 into the [3d][8h][kd] flop and took the pot. Next hand Schmukal got a walk - that's possibly the first of the final table. --RD

6.15pm: Femi Fakinle doubles through Jens Schmukal
Femi Fakinle opened to 74,000 from the button and Jens Schmukal moved all-in from the big blind, Fakinle quickly called, he was the player at risk, he had just over 500,000 at the start of the hand.

    Fakinle: [10h][10s]

    Schmukal: [As][7h]

The board gave the neutrals in the room an almighty sweat [5c][6c][4d][2s][2h] Schmukal missed his numerous outs and slips to 700,000. --NW

6.10pm: Fakinle gets a little back
Fakinle limped on the button and both other players joined him to the [jc][3s][5d] flop. Farrell tossed 60,000 into the middle and Fakinle moved all-in. Farrell passed. --RD

6pm: Fakinle on the wrong side of bullying
Fakinles opened to 62,000 from the button and Farrell set him in. Fakinle passed. -- RD

    ukipt killarney_day 4_femi short.jpg

Femi Fakinle is the player in trouble now

    5.50pm: Schmukal chips up
Jens Schmukal has been pretty quiet for the majority of three handed play but he just made a big play at a pot and was rewarded. Aonghus Farrell opened to 60,000 from the button, Schmukal three-bet to 150,000 total from the small blind, Femi Fakinle folded and Farrell called. The two of them saw a flop of [4d][Kc][7s]. Schmukal checked to Farrell who bet 200,000, Schmukal check-raised all-in for 674,000 in total. Farrell gave it up and Schmukal raked a big pot. --NW

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 12,000-24,000, ANTE 3,000

    5.35pm: Huge swing to Farrell
Fakinle has been playing an aggressive game and sometimes that's going to burn you. Fakinle opened from the button for 48,000 and was raised in the small blind by farrell to around 200,000. Fakinle made the call. Farrell led 300,000, just over 30% of his stack, into the [3h][2s][9d] flop. Fakinle annouced all-in and was eventually called by Farrell who showed [tc][ts] absolutely crushing Fakinle's pocket sixes. No outdraw for Fakinle and he's dropped to 500,000 while Farrell is on 2.2m. It's some comeback. --RD

    ukipt killarney_day 4_aonghus farrell.jpg

Farrell is now in pole position with 2.2m

    5.35pm: Farrell gets some back
It's Femi Fakinle and Aonghus Farrell who are involved in most of the pots. Fakinle limped from the small blind and Farrell checked his option. They both checked the [Kh][Ks][2d] flop. Fakinle led for 31,000 on the [9d] turn. A bet Farrell called. On the [Kc] river both players checked. Farrell showed [2c][2s] to win the pot. --NW

    5.25pm: Cagey play
This final table shot off at a ferocious pace but now that the action is three-handed things have slowed a little. There have been a couple of raise-and-take-the-blinds moments and a couple of hands which haven't been bet until the river. There are large jumps now with €15,000 difference between second and third. --RD

5.15pm: Femi Fakinle gets some back from Aonghus Farrell
From the small blind Femi Fakinle made it 75,000 to go and was called by the big blind Aonghus Farrell. They saw a flop of [Ah][Kh][4d], Fakinle continued the aggression betting 120,000, Farrell again called. The turn was the [Ad] and again the pattern repeated itself, Farrell calling a bet of 250,000 this time, this was suddenly a very serious and chunky pot with over 800,000 in middle. On the [7h] river, Fakinle first checked his cards and then moved all-in. Farrell stretched back in his chair, then slumped forward and then gave Fakinle a long stare down. Eventually though he elected to fold. --NW

5.05pm: Schmukal fails to fire the third bullet
Jens Schmukal had bet the first two streets of the [jh][qd][kh][8s] board but when the [6h] was flipped on the river he finally gave up on the hand. Farrell had been check-calling and showed a weak [qs][4c] which was more than enough to beat Schmukal's [6s][4s]. A third bullet would have taken that pot. -- RD

5.05pm: Aonghus Farrell doubles through Femi Fakinle
On the first hand back from the break Aonghus Farrell limped the button and Jens Schmukal completed from the small blind. Femi Fakinle though wouldn't let the other two see a cheap flop and raised to 101,000. Farrell made the call and Schmukal folded.

    Flop: [9c][8s][Jh]

Fakinle bet 151,000 and after a minutes dwell Farrelll moved all in for 421,000 total. After a long, long think, Fakinle called.

    Farrell: [10d][7d]

    Fakinle: [9d][2s]

The turn and river were [4s][7h] and Farrell doubled up to over a million, but Fakinle is still chip leader although the stacks are more bunched now. --NW

5pm:The final three players are coming back to their seats
The current chip counts show that Femi Fakinle has a huge lead over Schmukal and Farrell covering both of them and is looking unlikely to slow the pace. Will the German, buoyed by his country's World Cup victory, push through another knockout? Farrelll is the player at risk at the moment with 25 big blinds. He'll have to get his chips moving if he wants to have a shot at the title.

    Femi Fakinle: 2,180,000
    Jens Schmukal: 1,024,000
    Aonghus Farrell: 522,000

    Play has begun. --RD

3.15pm: Fakinle forces a fold from Downey

The flop was [2s][8c][4c]. Downey bet 50,000 and was called. On the [3c] turn, Downey bet 100,000 and was called. Downey slowed down on the [4h] river checked to Fakinle who fired 180,000. Downey tanked for a couple of minutes before folding. Fakinle showed [As][10s] as he collected the pot, Downey said, 'You were ahead.' --NW

    Rowley: [9h][9d]

Schmukal flopped big with [ks][qc][th] leaving Rowley drawing thin. It was [tc] on the turn and [kd] on the river to let the German fill up and take a large 850,000 stack. Game on. -- RD

    Phu: [ah][qs]

David Rowley raised under the gun to 35,000 and was three-bet to 100,000 by Brian Downey to 100,000. Rowley tank-folded and Downey flashed what appeared to be [th][6h] possibly trying to build a loose image perhaps? -- RD

2.30pm: Fakinle putting big stack to good use
Since he eliminated Mike Hill, Femi Fakinle has continued to bully the table taking down three pots uncontested pre-flop. Most of the other stacks are closely bunched and they seem reluctant to take on the dominant chip leader. --NW

    2.25pm:One for you, Phu

    Hill: [10s][10h]

    Fakinle: [Qd][Qs]

The board ran out [Ad][6s][5s][2h][3d] and Femi Fakinle stretched his chiplead still further. Hill though has the consolation of knowing his is top of the UKIPT leaderboard. --NW

    UKIPT Killarney: Final tables profiles

    Sunday, June 27th, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPGIt's day four of the UKIPT Killarney and only eight of the 253 players who started remain. We have five Irishmen two Englishmen and a German. It remains to be seen if the fireworks on the felt between Philip Phu, Mike Hill and Jens Schmukal match those that we expect to witness in Bloemfontein. The tournament organisers have set up a large screen in the poker room so, if they wish to, the final tablists can keep at least one eye on the football.

Current chip leader Fami Fakinle is a self confessed Liverpool fan, like Steven Gerrard he'll be hoping to lead from the front to victory today. Although we can't be sure if Fakinle will take home the title (and the lovely crystal trophy) we do know that Mike Hill will sit atop the UKIPT leaderboard after today's final table the only question is how big his lead will be over Chris Brammer. Full final table profiles of our remaining eight are below.

    Seat 1
Philip Phu, 19, United Kingdom, PokerStars Qualifier - 231,000

Philip lives in London and is playing his first ever live event here in Killarney, having qualified for €1. His favourite type of poker is multi-table tournaments. UKIPT Killarney: Femi Fakinle leading the UKIPT Killarney final table

    Saturday, June 26th, 2010

    ukiptthumb.JPG

There are two stories today and appropriately for the UKIPT one is from Ireland and the other from the UK. First we have Irishman Femi Fakinle who started the day midfield with 96,100 and finished the day with a table cracking 1,045,500. He's some 400,000 ahead of the pack and is looking good to make big money. First place pays out €63,400 but even the first unlucky short stack to lose a flip will take €7,425.

    ukipt killarney_day 3_femi fakinle.jpg

Fakinle has plenty to smile about going to the final table with a mammoth 400,000 chip lead over second place

Fakinle seemed to be involved in a lot of the biggest pots being played, little surprise given that he's finished the day with over 1m. The turning point for the 26-year old father of two was when he got it all in against Irish legend Liam Flood with middle set with [6c][6d] on a [8c][6h][5s] flop against Liam Flood's [7s][8s]. Fakinle held up to claim the massive 400k pot and after that he never looked back making some big folds and big bluffs along the way. One thing is certain and that's that we won't have a chip leader who is reluctant to get involved from the off tomorrow.

    Chip counts
Femi Fakinle, Ireland, PokerStars qualifier - 1045500
    Peter Barrable, Ireland - 607000
    Brian Downey, Ireland - 602000
Jens Schmukal, Germany, PokerStars qualifier - 453000
David Rowley, United Kingdom, PokerStars qualifier - 361000
Philip Phu United Kingdom PokerStars qualifier - 231000
Michael Hill, United Kingdom, PokerStars Player - 222000
    Anoghus Farrell, Ireland - 206000

    ukipt killarney_day 3_liam flood again.jpg

Irish legend Liam Flood qualified online through PokerStars and would have been a hugely popular winner

The second story is that of Mike Hill and the UKIPT Leaderboard brigade. At the beginning of the day when our thirty-two cash finishers came back to play through to the final table we had five, yes five, previous UKIPT final table finishers in the form of Owen Robinson, Michael Graydon, Cat O'Neill, Dan Owston and Mike Hill. So not only were these famous five racing to make the final table and take the UKIPT Killarney title but they were also trying to stuff as many valuable leaderboard points in their pockets. Hill won a huge 400,000 pot against Michael Graydon after flopping top set with pocket tens against Graydon's pocket rockets, from which the Irishman never recovered. It was a huge swing in chips and in leaderboard points (see below). Depending on where Hill finishes tomorrow he could have anywhere up to a 32 point lead over Chris Brammer.

    ukipt killarney_day 3_mike hill wrap.jpg

Leaderboard leader Mike Hill is leading from the front in the leaderboard points leading stakes. Now there's a mouthful...

Now this leaderboard is not just about glory, no sir, the winner bags an incredible UKIPT passport that covers buy-ins and accommodation at all Season 2 events (including the £5,000 UKIPT Grand Final aka the EPT London). Using our semi-redundant powers of calculation we're putting a very rough price tag of £15,000 on that. Second and third place bag entry into four and two events respectively. Not bad considering you've already bagged a load of prize money. There are still plenty of points up for grabs and entry into a $10,000 freeroll for the top 100 players.

    UKIPT Leader board
    1. Michael Hill 141.5 to 161.05
    2. Christopher Brammer 128.75
    3. Michael Graydon 122.45
    4. Marius Lietuvninkas 122
    5. Dan Owston 113.75
    6. Owen Robinson 112.25
    7. Augustus Gilles 105
    8. Jack Ellwood 99.75
    9. Joeri Zandvliet 97.5
    10. Rupinder Bedi 95.1

Join us at 2pm tomorrow as the final table kicks off and even a little earlier if you want to catch up with out final table player profiles. There's going to be thrills and spills and plenty of tears (from German Jens Schmukal when England beat Germany 5-1 again...).

    Final table payouts
