Breaking news: Phillips, Schwartz join Team PokerStars Pro

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Just a few days ago, we stood in a very long line at the Santiago, Chile airport. It snaked back and forth between the stanchions for 45 minutes. About five minutes behind us in line was 2008 WSOP third place finisher Dennis Phillips on his way home from the LAPT event in Vina del Mar.

"See you soon," we said several times as we made our way through the snake. It was more out of being friendly than actually expecting to see him soon.

That same week, we watched one of Phillips' final table companions playing in Vina del Mar. Fourth place finisher Ylon Schwartz did his best to make a deep run in the LAPT event. During the event, someone asked him if he was disappointed about the fourth place WSOP finish.

"You know, yes and no," he said.

Now, perhaps, we knew what he meant.

We've learned that both Schwartz and Phillips plan to join the elite Team PokerStars Pro this week. The team currently sits at 29 members. Phillips and Schwartz will make #30 and #31.

If you're not already aware, Phillips is an accountant from St. Louis, Missouri who has been playing poker for many years and is a regular in the gateway city card rooms. After making the final table of two WSOP Circuit side events in 2007, Phillips went on to capture the attention of his hometown and the world when he went into the WSOP final table with the chip lead. Known around the world for his trademark St. Louis Cardinals cap, Phillips won $4.5 million in the 2008 World Series for his third place finish.

Dennis Phillips

Ylon Schwartz is a born and bred New York City guy. A poker player for the past 15 years, he already had eleven World Series cashes before making the final table run in 2008. Schwartz is also an accomplished chess player who has made no small amount of money on the chess board. He once threatened to run off with his $3.77 million in WSOP winnings and disappear into South America. Now, he's joining up with the most elite poker team in the world.

The announcements aren't quite up yet at PokerStars.com or the Team PokerStars Pro web page. We suspect that announcement to come within the next 24 hours.

Until then, we welcome both Dennis and Ylon to the team. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Combo Shot: Snookerfun Repeats as Sunday Warm-Up Champ

Monday, January 26th, 2009

$112,642.80

That amount went to our winner tonight as the skillfully lucky player that parries and fought through the 4,366 player field. Those players ponyed up $215 for the entry fee to the $750,000 Sunday Warm-up Guarantee this evening, thus no overlay as the guarantee from PokerStars was not needed once again. 630 players managed to take away at least $349.28 and the final table participants shown below were going home with no less then $7,072.92

Looking to repeat tonight is Snookerfun, who's back at the final table after winning $98,930.00 in his November Sunday Warm-up victory
(read about it here)

doktor007 couldn't operate his way out of a huge chip deficit when he lost a huge coin flip against Iteopepe88 and was left with under a big blind. His final bow with Jh-9h was no match for the trip fours of spiderfrank on the board of 3h-8s-4s-Th-4d to set up our Sunday Warm-Up final table tonight.

(Click on image for larger size)

Seat 1: Iteopepe88 (9242162 in chips)
Seat 2: harima (4658533 in chips)
Seat 3: ToBeTheMan (2236256 in chips)
Seat 4: SexSeen (4066615 in chips)
Seat 5: Snookerfun (2945221 in chips)
Seat 6: emyjim (7894887 in chips)
Seat 7: J0hnny_Dr@m@ (2621260 in chips)
Seat 8: spiderfrank (5564812 in chips)
Seat 9: 21aek21 (4430254 in chips)

Everyone started off the final table with at least ten big blinds in front of them, and the first player to make a move was J0hnny_Dr@m@ narrowly taking his KQo to victory over harima's call of J0hnny's three-bet all-in with J9o. harima missed his open ended straight draw and pair draws on the river on the board of 4s-8h-Ad-Th-5h to double up J0hnny into the four million chip mark, and dropping harima to the back of the pack with 1.4 million.

harima's fortunes did not change as six hands later he tried raising to 500,000 with blinds at 100,000/200,000 ante 20,000 leaving just 600,000 behind and found himself facing a three-bet by SexSeen for the rest of his chips. The math called for a call, and harima complied with Ks-9s creating a 2.7 million chip pot. SexSeen flipped up Ah-Qc for the brief lead before the flop showed Kh-Jd-6s to give harima the lead with a pair of kings and leaving SexSeen needing an ace or ten for the straight. The 3c was a dud, but the Tc on the river made a broadway straight for SexSeen and harima took home $7,072.92 in ninth place.

SexSeen wasn't done there as he would double up off of Iteopepe88 five hands later when his pocket jacks held up to the Ad-Qs of Iteopepe88 for a sizable 9.8 million chip pot. He also claimed the chip lead over emyjim who held 8.1 million.

ToBeTheMan you need to beat the man, and you need some cards. Manliness wasn't enough tonight for ToBeTheMan as he lacked stack size and card size against Snookerfun on his final hand. After calling Snookerfun's min-raise in the big blind and leaving just 488,000 behind both players saw the 3d-9h-4c flop. ToBeTheMan attempted a stop-and-go with Jh-Qc but Snookerfun was going nowhere getting 4:1 to call with Ts-Kc. 5h on the turn and 2s on the river neither player improved and ToBeTheMan was left with a no tournament chips but $10,915.00 in eighth place to regain his swagger away from the virtual felt.

The very next hand Snookerfun's attempt to repeat as Sunday Warm-up champ got a big boost courtesy of good cards and Iteopepe88. J0hnny_Dr@m@ opened the betting UTG+2 to 540,669 and was met by Iteopepe88's push for 4.1 million chips on the button. Not to be out done Snookerfun waited in the big blind having Iteopepe88 covered and made the insta-call with pocket rockets. J0hnny got out of the way as Iteopepe88 meekly flipped up Tc-Ac. Calling for clubs he only got one as the board spilled out 4d-5d-Qs-3h-4c to ship the 9.1 million chip pot to Snookerfun. Iteopepe88's starting final table chip lead spelled out into an unfortunate seventh place finish but a nice $17,464.00 consolation prize.

J0hnny_Dr@m@ provided no drama to 21aek21 in showing him the door in sixth place. After raising UTG to 669,666 J0hnny watched 21aek21's 2.2 million chips slide into the middle from the cutoff, with the blinds at 125,000/250,000 ante 25,000. J0hnny would make the call with Jh-Ad while leaving 2.9 million behind and 21aek21 would find himself well-behind holding Tc-Ah. As stated above, no drama here from J0hnny as the board ran out Qd-2s-2c-9d-5d to send 21aek21 home with $26,196.00 in sixth place.

Twelve hands later SexSeen wanted back into the mix and made an UTG raise to 685,485 only to run into spiderfrank's push from the big blind for 5.9 million. Since SexSeen covered by over six million chips he made the call with a suited big slick (Ac-Kc) but found himself well ahead of the Ah-Tc of spiderfrank. The 12.6 million chip pot was the largest of the tourney thus far and once again the favorite held up as the board showed Qs-Jc-6d-8d-6h to push SexSeen's chip lead to over 19 million chips. spiderfrank would get $34,928.00 to spin his traps another time for his fifth place effort.

J0hnny_Dr@m@ got himself in good position to double up with pocket aces against the 8s-9s of Snookerfun and caught a lot of drama when the board read Js-8c-Td-9d holding Snookerfun ahead for the suckout. But the Qd on the river gave both players the same straight chopping up the 8.2 million chip pot and putting J0hnny back in the rear chip position while Snookerfun still enjoyed his 18 million chip lead.

Seven hands later J0hnny would try again to double up his small stack against one of the large stacks. This time J0hnny faced off against SexSeen when he completed his small blind as SexSeen check his option. The flop came down Jh-2s-8h and J0hnny lead out for the minimum as the blinds were at 150,000/300,000 ante 30,000 and was met by a raise to 765,885. J0hnny responded with a shove to 3.1 million chip which was instantly called by SexSeen who was holding bottom two pair (8c-2h) and left J0hnny looking for a seven or Jack holding 8d-7c. The 2d on the turn left one out for a chop, but the 2s did not materialize on the river (Td) and J0hnny_Dr@m@ will have $43,660.00 extra to hang with his entourage after this fourth place finish.

After playing three handed for quite some time the chips were gradually drifting from SexSeen to emyjim. A double up and a couple of steals gone wrong, SexSeen found himself scratching for chips when the blinds moved up to 200,000/400,000 ante 40,000. A button raise to 1.2 million from emyjim prompted SexSeen to push his 7.5 million chips from the small blind. Snookerfun found himself in the middle of the chip splashing but holding a couple of black tens. He would make the call as emyjim abandoned his raise to see SexSeen's red fours. 8h-7d-8c-5d and no six or four on the river (5h) gave Snookerfun the huge 16.8 million chip pot. SexSeen will have $52,392.00 waiting for him next time he chooses to fire up PokerStars as the Sunday Warm-up heads-up battle begins!

Chip counts for our final two this evening as they battle it out for the $112,642.80 first place prize:

Seat 5: Snookerfun (28455933 in chips)
Seat 6: emyjim (15204067 in chips)

And done.

Yeah, one hand of heads-up play and we had our victor, besting the two hands of heads-up play just finished at the $1 Million Turbo Takedown final table.

A standard 1.2 million button raise from Snookerfun got emyjim thinking steal and he pushed for 14.7 million. But, once again Snookerfun had pocket tens (a new favorite hand perhaps?) which found himself well ahead of emyjim's Ad-8s. The 7c-9c-8d gave emyjim some more outs but gave Snookerfun an open ended straight draw. The Jh on the turn filled that draw and left emyjim looking for the last ten in the deck for a chop.

It did not come.

$78,588.00 runner-up check to emyjim for taking the three-handed small stack and making something big out of it against a tough field. To our two-time champ, Snookerfun, added another Sunday Warm-up title this time claiming $112,642.80 in addition to the $93K he earned in November!

vballbobbi Thumps Competition in $1 Million Turbo Takedown Win

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

There's no better value then a freeroll that pays out such big dollar amounts for a just a little time on the cash game tables, MTTs, or Sit and Go's here at PokerStars. The monthly $1 Million Turbo Takedown continues to provide players with a chance at something for nothing. Just 5,000 Frequent Players Points, obtained via satellite or straight up buy-in, gets you a seat in this tourney with a shot at its $100,000.00 first place prize. 8866 made their way here tonight and almost half of them went home with at least $90.00 to show just how easy it is to cash. Check out the link above for a description on the satellites being offered should you lack the 5,000 FPPs to get in.

Two big hands, one big winner, and one final table bubble boy. Unfortunately for fra73 his pocket queens could not hold up against the big slick of dark_check86 when the flop showed a king and showed fra73 the door when the board ran out 4d-Jh-Kd-4c-2c.

Here's your Turbo Takedown final table this evening:

Seat 1: Rugs6969 (1354414 in chips)
Seat 2: vballbobbi (5735684 in chips)
Seat 3: AR_GTAm (5344336 in chips)
Seat 4: mikiantimd (1055172 in chips)
Seat 5: dark_check86 (4199359 in chips)
Seat 6: jockel24 (2372603 in chips)
Seat 7: LFISBRTL (1440147 in chips)
Seat 8: jkopp984 (4056835 in chips)
Seat 9: a33bars (1039450 in chips)

mikiantimd would waste no time in double up, no time meaning some players were just readjusting their virtual stools to the new table when he open pushed from the small blind with Ah-6s to be called by dark_check86's Kh-Js. After neither player improved on the 7h-4s-Qh-2c-Qs board, mikiantimd took claim to the first pot of the final table and a healthy 2.1 million chips.

Under ten big blinds and holding a couple of red sevens while the action is folded to you in the cutoff is a great spot to push. a33bars found himself in that spot looking to snag the 216,000 chips in the middle without a fight, but fellow short stack Rugs6969 on the button held pocket nines and made the call while the blinds went to go look at crossword puzzles. No excitement for either player on the 6c-3c-Ks-8s-4h board and a33bars will have $5,500.00 in ninth place to spend, courtesy of his 5,000 FPPs spent this evening to enter.

With AR_GTAm sitting on the big stack at 7.6 million the others at the table got antsy for some action. dark_check86 made it 300,000 to go from UTG+2 with the blinds at 60,000/120,000 ante 12,000 and found a huge customer is jkopp984 who pushed from the button for his 1.4 million chips. The blinds folded back to dark_check86 who made the call with pocket jacks and still had 1.3 million behind. jkopp984 was left looking for some of Team PokerStars' Pro Greg Raymer's presto magic holding 5d-5s. The magic never got started on the board of 8d-7s-8h-Qs-2c and jkopp984's chip disappeared into dark_check86's stack. However $10,000 did magically appear in jkopp984's bankroll courtesy of PokerStars and his eighth place finish.

480,000 to go from Rugs6969 from the cutoff and mikiantimd responded quickly. "All-in". After putting in almost a third of his chips Rugs6969 followed thru with the call creating a 4.1 million chip pot with the blinds still at 60,000/120,000 ante 12,000. mikiantimd's Ac-9s was in the lead versus the Qc-Jd of Rugs6969 and solidified the lead on the 5c-5h-Ad flop. No running queens or jacks came and Rugs6969 was swept from the Turbo Takedown in seventh place earning $15,000 in the process.

After a slow beginning to the final table things heated up as the very next hand saw dark_check86 getting the wrong side of mikiantimd's aggression when mikiantimd pushed 6.1 million chips over the top of vballbobbi's 480,000 chip UTG+2 raise from the button. dark_check86 couldn't find a better spot to send his 4.2 million chips into the middle from small blind holding pocket kings. mikiantimd turned up the ill-timed bluff of Qc-7s, or was it ill-timed? The flop of Qd-7h-8c get mikiantimd the lead and a 2h and Ts later dark_check86 had a $20,000 sixth place bad beat story.

jockel24 would double up his small stack to 2.5 million on the next hand taking his pocket treys over the pocket deuces of mikiantimd.

Two hands later vballbobbi would put a deep hurt on LFISBRTL when he called LFISBRTL's button push from the small blind with Ac-Qs. The call left just $33,150 behind for LFISBRTL'S As-7h. The board stuck with the preflop favorite this time showing Jc-Kc-6c-Jd-2s to ship the 5.9 million chip pot to vballbobbi. A brief double-up the next hand, extended play for LFISBRTL until AR_GTAm took the scraps on the following hand. $25,000.000 was awarded for our fifth place finisher LFISBRTL.

Play finally slowed a bit with jockel24 getting another small double-up but retaining the bottom position until vballbobbi and AR_GTAm took shots at each other. Raising to 480,000 from the cutoff, AR_GTAm had a decision to make when vballbobbi three-bet to 1.2 million from the big blind with blinds at 80,000/160,000 ante 16,000. He chose to call and saw a flop of 2s-8d-9s and both started a raising war which ended up with both of their considerable stacks going into the middle. Pocket kings for vballbobbi and an open ended straight draw with Jh-Tc for AR_GTAm. No straight came from the 9h turn or Ah river and the 13.6 million chip pot was spiked to vballbobbi. AR_GTAm will drive off with $32,500.00 in fourth place.

In rapid succession we found our winner of the $100,000.00 first place prize. First jockel24's small stack found resistance as he shoved from the button for 2.3 million and vballbobbi was waiting for him in the small blind with an insta-call holding pocket jacks. Ah-8c for the hard fighting jockel24, but he ran out of gas in this brawl as the board played out Qs-Qh-Kc-8s-9c to add 4.8 million to vballbobbi's chip lead. For his persistence jockel24 was paid off to the tune of $40,000.00 in third place.

As we went to a very brief heads-up play here's how the stacks stood up (for two whole hands):

Seat 2: vballbobbi (16748186 in chips)
Seat 4: mikiantimd (9849814 in chips)

Vballbobbi took the blinds on the first hand, then with blinds at 80,000/160,000 ante 16,000 both players got really excited at the 7d-8h-6d flop after vballbobbi completed in the small blind. mikiantimd asked "we can't deal or what?" in the raising war while holding top pair (Jc-8s). vballbobbi wasn't having any talk as he shoved in a four bet push with a flopped straight (4s-5d) and got a call from mikiantimd. Drawing dead to a chop or running nine and ten, mikiantimd was the runner-up by the turned Ad and had $60,000.00 coming to him for the runner-up finish.

vballbobbi held the right cards at the right times tonight and walked away with a cool $100,000.00 from a simple buy-in of 5,000 FPPs as the $1 Million Turbo Takedown champion!

Turbo Takedown Results (01-25-09)

1. vballbobbi $100,000.00
2. mikiantimd $60,000.00
3. jockel24 $40,000.00

5. LFISBRTL $25,000.00
6. dark_check86 $20,000.00

8. jkopp984 $10,000.00
9. a33bars $5,500.00

ISANI Takes Home January Battle of the Planets Title to Holland

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

A new poker fiscal year, and a great way for a Sit and Go player to start off the year right with the PokerStars' Battle of the Planets $50,000 Triple Shootout freeroll. 439 SnG specialists lined up today after qualifying during weekly point races, to take their shot at the $12,500.00 first place prize. 81 players went home with at least $195.00 for winning the first leg of the triple shootout.

In pre-final table action, Snake1928 was the unfortunate money bubble boy today as his flopped pair of sevens fell to the wayside when cristian10's had an open ended straight flush draw on the turn got there on the river. During the second leg of the triple shootout, JareemWeaver could only utter a "sick" in the chat box after he and OvBismarck got their nearly even stacked chips in the middle pre-flop with JareemWeaver holding AQo to OvBismarck's A7o. The Jh-7d-Jd flop that showed a third, unnecessary seven on the river for a boat locked up the first seat at the January Battle of the Planets final table while most tables still had five players left.

NickLeeson95 will certainly have the best looking railbirds today for the final table after defeating duvvard72 heads up, if his "Playboy Mansion" place of residence is to be believed. After Nick wrapped up his seat all eyes went to table three where the final seat was awarded to one of four players still in. ZipZottel and rikichipay knotted up for a lengthy heads-up battle nearly reaching the 400/800 ante 75 level to decide the final seat and a several hundred dollar difference between 9th and 10th. But, ZipZottel's big slick held up to rikichipay's A4o despite both players pairing their kickers to send rikichipay home with $195.00 in tenth place.

Seat 1: 3Shells
Seat 2: csabes
Seat 3: ZipZottel
Seat 4: NickLeeson95
Seat 5: KK-DOG4
Seat 6: kindaichi10
Seat 7: matt2120
Seat 8: ISANI (
Seat 9: OvBismarck

Everyone starts over during the third leg of this triple shootout with 1,500 in chips and blinds at a plentiful 10/20 level. OvBismarck shook off the rust of waiting nearly an hour for the final table to start and took the first significant pot off KK-DOG4 when his nines turned a set and rivered a boat as he raked in the 944 chip pot. ISANI also showed some early round spunk by winning five hands in a row, and seven of nine to move into the early chip lead with 2,350 and blinds at 15/30.

kindaichi10 would become the first victim of the final table as the blinds moved up to 25/50. After raising to 400 from the cutoff, kindaichi10 got called by matt2120 on the button as the blinds folded to see a flop of 7s-6d-4c. With a stop-and-go play, kindaichi10 immediately pushed his remaining 625 chips into middle and was called by the similarly stacked matt2120. As-Qd for kindaichi10 and matt2120's pocket nines were in the lead. That lead would extend into a lock, making his set on the turn with the 9h and sent kindaichi10 home in ninth place with $775.00

At the break here's how the stacks sized up with blinds at 50/100:

Seat 1: 3Shells (1320 in chips)
Seat 2: csabes (1140 in chips)
Seat 3: ZipZottel (1200 in chips)
Seat 4: NickLeeson95 (875 in chips)
Seat 5: KK-DOG4 (2053 in chips)
Seat 7: matt2120 (2520 in chips)
Seat 8: ISANI (1725 in chips)
Seat 9: OvBismarck (2667 in chips)

A back and forth hand would cripple NickLesson95 as he took a chance to improve on his small stack when he pushed for 725 chips after it folded around to his small blind. But KK-DOG4, who took a couple of hits and had only 703 chips, insta-called with Ac-Td. NickLesson95 would turn over Kd-7d for the steal but the Kh-7c-Ad flop shifted the lead in Nick's favor with bottom two pair. The turn Qd seemed to improve Nick's lead further by shutting out some diamond outs for KK-DOG4, but the Ah on the river provided the re-suck and KK-DOG4 was awarded the 1,406 chip pot, leaving NickLesson95 with a hammer-tastic 72 chips. He would take those chips and build them back to over 1,000 in the next two hands perhaps setting up a comeback story?

Sadly, no, today was not that day.

Several hands later, NickLesson95 would make the call for his remaining 814 chips with the blinds at 100/200 in the big blind facing a button raise from csabes. Ks-Qh for Nick, As-7c for csabes and the board ran out with nary a broadway card as csabes paired his kicker on the 8c-9s-2d-7s-4h board to send NickLesson95 home in eighth place and $1,200.00 for the bunnies on the rail.

KK-DOG4 climbed the chip ladder quickly after nearly busting NickLesson95, he doubled up off OvBismarck squeaking his AJo past Ov's AQo with a flopped Jack. Then he sent matt2120 home in seventh place when matt2120 shoved his remaining 1,300 in chips UTG with the blinds at 125/250 ante 25 and KK-DOG4 made the call with Ac-Js in the big blind. Two live cards in Ts-9s for matt2120, but the 3h-Kh-Ks-Kd-8d board gave no improvement to either player as matt2120 had to settle for the $1,700.00 in seventh place.

In rapid succession our sixth and fifth place players exited as four hands later OvBismarch, 3Shells, and csabes would get their small stacks into the middle in a three-way all-in preflop.

OvBismarck: 6d-9c
3Shells: 8s-Kd
csabes: Qd-Ac

csabes would retain his lead through the Qh-3h-Jc-7h-9d board and cripple OvBismarck down to 198 chips while sending 3Shells home $2,200.00 richer in sixth place. The very next hand OvBismarck would throw his crumbs into the middle against ISANI's UTG raise with Ac-7s. ISANI's suited connector of 9s-8s would need the entire board of 4d-Qh-7h-Tc-Jd to shutdown any comeback with a straight. OvBismarck picked up $2,735.00 for the fifth place finish.

ZipZottel had a fairly quiet final table but managed to take away $3,350.00 in fourth place after becoming severely short stacked in the small blind holding just 850 chips and blinds at 125/250 ante 25. He called off his remaining chips with Kc-9c against the aggressive csabes' button raise. Once again csabes had the goods showing two black jacks and promptly flopping a boat on the Ac-Jh-Ad board. Running kings did not come down the 5s turn and 8h river, and four became three.

After several all-ins by all three players ISANI retained a commanding lead and he applied the pressure on csabes with a push while covering from the small blind. csbaes decided to take a gamble with 2h-Qs on his remaining 1,800 chips. ISANI covering by over 8,000 chips turned over a decent pocket pair of sevens which held up on the 3d-Ac-8c-9h-Jh board to ship $4,500.00 to csabes in third place and set up the heads-up battle with KK-DOG4.

Here's how the brief heads-up play started:

Seat 5: KK-DOG4 (3087 in chips)
Seat 8: ISANI (10413 in chips)

A three to one chip lead survived one double up by KK-DOG4, and fifteen hands into the proceedings; ISANI would be crowned this month's Battle of the Planets champion. Starting the hand with just 2,374 in chips and blinds at 150/300 ante 25 and facing the raise to 900 from ISANI, KK-DOG4 would push his stack with 2d-Ah. ISANI insta-called with pocket nines (9h-9c). KK-DOG4 would improve to a pair of twos on the flop but no further on the 2c-3d-Qs-Js-8d board and left the tournament as the runner-up earning $7,000.00 for his effort.

ISANI exchanged the 13,500 in tournament chips for a very real $12,500.00 and the title of January's Battle of the Planets champion!

PokerStars Passport winners ready to hit road

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

For the past 13 months, we have shared a friendship with Dustin Mele, the first-ever PokerStars Passport winner. Mele won the PokerStars Passport in December 2007, and during 2008, he and his girlfriend Tracy became friends and part of the PokerStars family. As we traveled around the world to PokerStars events, the couple came with us on Mele's worldwide passport.

Mele's trip around the world is complete for now, but we have some brand new PokerStars Passport winners to introduce.

This year, PokerStars decided to hand out more than one set of papers. In fact, eight people will be traveling the world on the PokerStars Passport.

Recently, PokerStars held three tournaments with some big time prizes on the line. Not only did the events award thousands of dollars worth of cash, they also gave away the coveted PokerStars Passports. The top 100 TLB players played in one event. The top 101-200 and 201-500 played in two other events.

The following people walked away with the top prizes.

Top 100 TLB

1. phillyJbizee (United States) -- 5-Stamp Passport
2. delfino74 (Italy) -- 4-Stamp Passport
3. Bruno GT (Brazil) -- 1-Stamp Passport

Top 101-200 TLB

1. AOthegreat8 (United States) -- 1-Stamp Passport

Top 201-500 TLB

1. jus2awsum (United States) -- 1-Stamp Passport

There are also three other PokerStars Passport winners who won their visas via the yearly Tournament Leader Board. Powerhouse Shaun "shaundeeb" Deeb won the five-stamp passport. A three-stamp passport went to derek8. BreakRibs will be traveling with two stamps on his.

For each stamp in their passports, the players will get a free prize package to a live PokerStars event. That means they can go anywhere anywhere from the PCA to the LAPT to the EPT to the APPT to the RPT to the WSOP. That's a lot of letters and a lot of different cities. There aren't many better prizes out there.

Congratulations to all of this year's winners. We look forward to seeing you on the road.

EPT Deauville: Kranich cruises to EPT glory

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

No one ever won a poker tournament without making the odd bluff, hitting the odd card, laying the odd trap and making the occasional hero call that might also have sent them to the rail. The 28-year-old Moritz Kranich from Hamburg, Germany, has shown all the requisite skills and more in Deauville this week, and is the worthy champion and winner of the €851,400 first prize.

_MG_0435_Moritz_Kranich_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Moritz Kranich

But the most significant hero call of Kranich's poker career to date was actually made by his opponent, the 19-year-old Tristan Clemencon, when he and Kranich were the dominant bullies in a three-handed battle. There was only a 100,000 difference in the two-million-plus chip stacks of Clemencon and Kranich when the German moved all in on a board of Tc-Th-8s. The third player - France's Arnaud Esquevin - looked on with delight.

_MG_9959_Tristan_Clemoncon_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Tristan Clemencon

Clemencon thought for more than five minutes as he searched for the hero inside himself. But when Clemencon made that call, it was Kranich pumping his fist. The German had laid the perfect trap with his J-10 and Clemencon, drawing dead, mucked what he later revealed to be 8-2.

"I played my trips fast thinking of he has anything at all, he will get it in," said Kranich. "He fell for it and called my check raise."

With that, Kranich, previously best known as multi-table tournament specialist on PokerStars, and an online qualifier here, vaulted into a commanding chip lead for a brief heads-up battle with Esquevin.

_MG_0367_Moritz_Kranich_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg

That ended within an hour with the crowning of the second German EPT champion of the season.

"Poker has boomed in Germany for the last two or three years," he explained. "And there are a lot of good players."

Including Kranich. He had been a massive chip leader at the end of day two in Deauville, and he had played some of the best poker seen on the tour this year to get to that position. He seemed nailed on to take his place as chip leader around the final table after he also cruised through day three. But Clemencon had belied his tender years and led a spirited French charge on home soil.

When we reconvened in the Casino Barriere de Deauville at 2pm this afternoon, Frenchmen occupied five of the eight final table seats, with Clemencon out in front.

_MG_9765_Neil Stoddart.jpg

It was a fairly top-heavy chip ladder as the first hand of the afternoon was dealt. Clemencon, Kranich and the Italian player Andrea Benelli each had comfortably more than a million chips, while none of Jorn Walthaus, a lone Dutch representative, nor the French quartet of Esquevin, Jonathan Azoulay, Bruno Launais and Thomas Delattre had much more than 500,000.

And so those small stacks began to fall. First, Delattre's A-10 ran into Launais' A-K. One down. Then Launais received a taste of his own medicine when his A-7 slipped into the big slick of Esquevin.

_MG_9936_Bruno_Launais_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Bruno Launais

Walthaus and Azoulay then fell in consecutive hands - again an accident with A-rag against A-K for Walthaus, then a plucky J-8 shove from Azoulay running into Benelli's A-2.

The only short stack from the start of the day still alive at this point was Esquevin, and it was going exactly according to plan for him. He said yesterday that despite trailing in chips, he knew that "anything could happen". And he was right.

_MG_9976_Arnaud_Esquevin_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Arnaud Esquevin

Benelli, the only player with previous EPT final table experience, was flexing his muscles all afternoon and had even strong-armed himself past Clemencon and Kranich to the chip lead. But the wheels came off in spectacular fashion for Benelli: his pocket jacks cost him a bundle against Clemencon's 9-7, which had made two pairs, and then the same knaves, this time in Esquevin's hand, cost him and his Q-8 his chance at the title.

_MG_9918_Andrea_Benelli_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Andrea Benelli

So that left us with the three who would cash in such epic circumstances. Clemencon later told French reporters that he thought he misplayed the huge hand against Kranich, and described it as "the worst hand of my life". Certainly the result was a disaster for the young Frenchman, but he has been outstanding all week in Deauville, and is still a hero in the making.

Likewise Esquevin, who wound up with €495,400 for his second place, almost precisely one Euro per unit of tournament chips he had at the start of the final. It looked like a short stack then; it looks better in the bank account now.

As for Kranich, he now joins his friend Sebastian Ruthenberg in the season five EPT winners' enclosure, and he also intends to join his wife Jessica in a new house in their home town of Dortmund, bought with a small slice of his €851,400 win.

All in all, it was a hugely welcome return for the whole EPT circus to the Normandy coast and Deauville. Let's not leave it three years next time, huh.

EPT Deauville: Level 28 updates

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Live updates from level 28 of the EPT Deauville are brought to you by Stephen Bartley and Howard Swains. Click refresh to see the latest updates. This post will track the action in level 28.

Blinds: 40,000-80,000 (ante: 5,000)

8.57pm: Moritz Kranich, a PokerStars qualifier from Germany, win the EPT Deauville and €851,400.
Full details on the day will be available shortly.

8.56pm: Arnaud Esquevin of France is eleiminated in second place for €495,500.
It was a simple all-in pre-flop and a call. Kranich made the move and Esquevin called, showing A-3 to the German's A-7. Kranich was ahead but the possibility of a split pot would remain. The flop came 9c-Td-6d. Kranich wanted low cards without seeing a three and he got it. A 5s on the turn, an ace on the river. It was all over. Moritz Kranich is the EPT Deauville champion.

8.45pm: Chips
A new level begins with the stacks looking like this:
Moritz Kranich - 5,100,000
Arnaud Esquevin - 1,400,000

EPT Deauville: Level 27 updates

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Live updates from level 27 of the EPT Deauville are brought to you by Stephen Bartley and Howard Swains. Click refresh to see the latest updates. This post will track the action in level 27.

Blinds: 30,000-60,000 (ante: 5,000)

8.42pm: How about now?
Esquevin calls from the small blind but Kranich makes it 240,000. Esquevin has that glint in his eye again and announces "all-in". Kranich folds.

8.39pm: They think it's all over... it's not
On a flop of 6s-Kh-5h Esquevin made it 90,000 before Kranich raised to 275,000. Esquevin had that look in his eye and moved all-in. We thought this was it, but no. Kranich passed.

8.32pm: Moritz wins another
Just to mix it up a bit, here's the latest hand stacatto style: Flop. 6-7-5. Check. Bet. Call. Turn. Tc. Check. All-in. Fold.

8.30pm: Loose change
Esquevin takes the smallest of pots - the blinds - after both check down a board of 9s-8d-7h-Ad-7c. Esquevin showed Ah-Jd while Kranich mucked.

8.25pm: Route one poker
The first all-in of the heads up sees Kranich make it 160,000 pre-flop before Esquevin moved all-in. Kranich wasn't biting though.

8.22pm: Chips
Moritz Kranich - 5,550,000
Arnaud Esquevin - 920,000

8.20pm: Play restarts
That says it all really.

8.15pm: We need a player
At least one player is back in his seat. Moritz Kranich sits waiting patiently. Play should resume any minute.

8.05pm: Play stops
Players are in the middle of an unscheduled break. Play should get going again soon.

7.58pm: Tristan Clemencon, France, eliminated in third place, earning 284,800
Clemencon is done, putting his final 100,000 into the pot on the first time he gets the opportunity to do so. Both opponents oblige with the call. Moritz Kranich bets the 10-high flop, which gets rid of Esquevin, and he's heads-up against the all in Clemencon. The French player has J-2o, Kranich has 10-8o and Clemencon never catches up. From three million to bust in less than half an hour.

7.49pm: Kranich with a mountain to sit on
Clemencon bet 200,000 pre-flop which was called by Kranich for a flop of Tc-Th-8s. Clemencon bet 200,000 now and Kranich raised to 550,000. Clemencon called for a 2c on the turn. Now Kranich moved all-in. Clemencon went into the tank for a full five minutes before calling, mucking to Kranich's Js-Td. Kranich now has more than five million. That hero call leaves Clemencon with only 100,000.

_MG_9991_Moritz_Kranich_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Moritz Kranich

7.43pm: Reraise wins
Moritz Kranich and Arnaud Esquevin see a flop in an unraised pot. It's 2d-6s-7c and Kranich bets, Esquevin raises to 160,000 and Kranich folds. The common consensus among the press corps, by the way, is that the best three players from the final 15 or so have made it to this three-handed battle.

7.38pm: For Kranich the spoils
Kranich bet 200,000 pre-flop whch was called by Esquevin for a flop of Jd-9s-Kc. Esquevin checked and Kranich made it another 205,000 to go. Now Esquevin moved all-in and Kranich called showing pocket aces. Esquevin flipped over Kd-8d before the turn 2d and river 7c were dealt, giving the spoils to the German.

7.32pm: Three hands in
Three pots, none getting further than pre-flop action. Esquevin has been most effective, re-raising twice to win hands, adding a few hundred thousand to his stack.

7.23pm: Extended break
The three remaining players have taken an extended break after Benelli's elimination. We be back with the action when they return.

_MG_0008_Neil Stoddart.jpg

7.03pm: Andrea Benelli, Italy, eliminated in fourth place, earning €219,800
After that quadruple up of the previous hand, Benelli's resurgence could go no further. He was all in again and this time faced two other callers: Tristan Clemencon and Arnaud Esquevin. They both check a flop of Qh-10c-Kd but then Esquevin bets 100,000 on the turn of Kh. Clemencon gets the hint, gets out the way, and leaves Esquevin's K-6 to be all over Benelli's 6c-8s. The Italian, who rose into the chip lead at one point today, will have to wait for his first EPT title, despite his second final table of the season.

6.59pm: One down, about five more to go
First hand back, Benelli has no choice but to be all in for his total 40,000 stack. Each of the other players give him the most possibly value for money and all call, then check it down, until Esquevin bets on the river. He has a pair of sixes, but Benelli's T-9 has made a straight on a board of 7-8-Q-6-J.

6.55pm: Chip counts
The players have returned from the break and their chip stacks are as follows:

Tristan Clemencon, 3,650,000
Arnaud Esquevin, 1,635,000
Moritz Kranich, 1,050,000
Andrea Benelli, 40,000

6.50pm: Play is about to restart. The official chip counts will be available on the chip count page in just a few minutes from now.

EPT Deauville: Level 26 updates

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Live updates from level 26 of the EPT Deauville are brought to you by Stephen Bartley and Howard Swains. Click refresh to see the latest updates. This post will track the action in level 26.

Blinds: 25,000-50,000 (ante: 5,000)

6.35pm: Double up for Esquevin, Benelli's slump continues
Arnaud Esquevin's day just improved even more when, on the final hand of the level, he raised pre-flop and Andrea Benelli called from the big blind. The flop came 2h-Qh-Js which couldn't get much better for Esquevin. He had J-J and Benelli had Q-8o. Esquevin's top set survived through turn and river against the top pair and he's back in this game.

That's the end of the level and they've taken a 15 minute break. Chip counts are coming.

_MG_0041_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Andrea Benelli

6.28pm: Current chip counts
Tristan Clemencon -- 3,700,000
Moritz Kranich -- 1,100,000
Andrea Benelli -- 1,000,000
Arnaud Esquevin -- 600,000

6.27pm: Chip leaders lump it in
A huge pot between the two chip leaders. With 1,500,000 already in the pot with the board reading 4s-7h-3c-Kd, Benelli checked to Clemencon who bet another 450,000. Benelli called showing pocket jacks but Clemencon had him beat with 9-7 for trips. The 2.4million in the pot just got passed to the 19 year old.

6.23pm: Esquevin in the frame
As one of the relative short stacks at the start of the day, Arnaud Esquevin said that "anything could happen" and that he was happy just to have made the final table. Well, it got better than that: he's still there with half the field gone. Here's what else he said to the video blog team:

Watch EPT Deauville S5: Final Table Arnaud Esquevin (English) on PokerStars.tv

6.18pm: Kranich kranks it up
Moritz Kranich just took Jh-3h up against Andrea Benelli's A-K, all in pre-flop. And it was good. The jack flopped and the Italian's dominance took a slight hit. Well, a 650,000 chip sized hit, to be approximate.

6.12pm: Post elimination counts
After Benelli eliminated Azoulay, the Italian may have just assumed the chip lead. These are the latest approximate counts:

Tristan Clemencon, 2,600,000
Andrea Benelli, 2,610,000
Moritz Kranich, 650,000
Arnaud Esquevin, 650,000

6.07pm: Jonathan Azoulay, France, eliminated in fifth place, earning €182,700
Two hands, two eliminations. Walthaus's disappearance on the last hand meant Jonathan Azoulay earned at least another €40,000. And that seemed to be good enough for him as he shoved all in on the very next hand, running into the big blind of the big stack Andrea Benelli. The Italian saw an ace and called - it was only 250,000. Benelli's A-2 was up against Azoulay's J-8 and although a jack flopped, so did an ace and Azoulay was sent to the rail

_MG_9967_Jonathan_Azoulay_EPT5Dea_Neil Stoddart.jpg
Jonathan Azoulay

6pm: Jorn Walthaus, Holland, PokerStars qualifier, eliminated in sixth place, earning €142,400
Sometimes the chip leader actually has the cards as well. Jorn Walthaus shoves all in over the top of Tristan Clemencon's opener, but the snap-call from Clemencon spells trouble for the Dutch player. Clemencon has A-K and dominates Walthaus's A-2. The flop and turn gives some hope of a split pot for the all in player - J-7-8-9 - but the river is neither a ten nor a two and Walthaus is out.

5.54pm: And don't forget the joker!
A bet of 136,000 pre-flop from Benelli pummelled into submission by the re-raise all in from Arnaud Esquevin. Benelli shows the ace of spades and folds.

5.47pm: For the benefit of Benelli
Clemencon led the betting pre-flop, 130,000 called by Benelli for a flop of 5s-8d-9d. Both checked for a 7d turn. Benelli then made it 140,000. Not good for Clemencon who folded.

5.43pm: Clemencon on camera
Tristan Clemencon, our chip leader going into today's final table, was agreeably chipper as he spoke to the video blog team about his tournament so far:

Watch EPT Deauville S5: Final Table Tristan Clemencon (English) on PokerStars.tv

5.41pm: Chips
Players start the new level with these approximate counts (seat order):

Arnaud Esquevin - 500,000
Jorn Walthaus - 600,000
Moritz Kranich - 700,000
Andrea Benelli - 2,200,000
Tristan Clemencon - 2,000,000
Jonathan Azoulay - 227,000

5.40pm: New level
We are moving closer to uncharted territories. The published EPT structure only takes us to the end of level 26, this level, and so who knows where we go after that.

EPT Deauville: Level 25 updates

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Live updates from level 25 of the EPT Deauville are brought to you by Stephen Bartley and Howard Swains. Click refresh to see the latest updates. This post will track the action in level 25.

Blinds: 20,000-40,000 (ante: 4,000)

5.33pm: No Benelli for it
And in the last hand, Benelli moves all-in behind a bet of 150,000 by Esquevin on a flop of Ks-4h-5h. Esquevin made him wait but eventually folded.

5.30pm: Second to last
The penultimate hand of the level features Moritz Kranich moving all in without any takers.

5.27pm: Jorn to be wild
After an initial opening bet of 108,000 from Clemencon Jorn Walthaus moves all-in for 321,000 more. Clemencon thinks for a while but lays down his hand. Walthaus takes the pot showing Tc-6s.

5.20pm: Bruno Launais, France, eliminated in seventh place, earning €108,300
It's all over for Launais, who runs into a resurgent Arnaud Esquevin. Launais raises from mid-position, Esquevin reraises from the button and Launais makes the pot-committed call. Launais has A-7o, Esquevin has A-Ko and a king on a rainbow flop all but ends it. Au revoir Launais.

Launais spoke to the video bloggers ahead of today's final table:

Watch EPT Deauville S5: Final Table Bruno Launais (English) on PokerStars.tv

5.11pm: Clemencon banging on the Walthaus door
We didn't see a card but there were still oodles of chips in the middle. Clemencon made it 108,000 pre-flop which Jorn Walthause raised to 265,000. The action was folded back to Clemencon who announced all-in, immediately making Walthaus muck his hand.

5.07pm: Dealer change chip count
They are rotating the dealer at the final table. Not literally; that would be cruel and dizziness might cause accidents. They are replacing the dealer, rather. In the break, here are the approximate latest chipcounts:

Arnaud Esquevin - 400,000
Jorn Walthaus - 750,000
Moritz Kranich - 650,000
Andrea Benelli - 1,825,000
Bruno Launais - 500,000
Tristan Clemencon - 1,900,000
Jonathan Azoulay - 333,000

4.56pm: Clemencon: none shall pass
Bruno Launais decided to have another stab at Tristan Clemencon's big blind, making a standard button raise but angering Clemencon into shoving all in. Fold.

4.52pm: So near
So much promise, instead the hand fizzled out with pre-flop betting turning into a check-chech showdown, Walthaus showing pocket sixes, beaten by Clemencon's J-8 with a jack on the flop.

4.45pm: Esquevin double up
Arnaud Esquevin moves all in from the button for his final 251,000. Moritz Kranich makes sure he knows exactly how much he's being asked to call before doing precisely that. Esquevin shows Ac-Jd and Kranich has Kc-Qc. The French player was ahead pre-flop and he is even further to the good on the flop of 3h-As-Ah. The turn and river are blanks and Esquevin doubles up to take anther chunk out of Kranich.

4.40pm: Clemecon grabs some back
Tristan Clemencon's chip lead was eroded during that last level, but he has just hauled some back, from the stack of Bruno Launais. Launais raises to 105,000 pre-flop, Clemencon calls, and then after Launais checks the flop of 10s-9h-5d, a bet of 140,000 from Clemencon takes it down.

4.35pm: Walthaus talks
Jorn Walthaus has had a decent start to today's final table. Yesterday he talked to the video blog team:

Watch EPT Deauville S5: Interview with Jorn Walthaus Day 3 (English) on PokerStars.tv

4.32pm: Chips
Arnaud Esquevin - 327,000
Jorn Walthaus - 811,000
Moritz Kranich - 1,131,000
Andrea Benelli - 1,897,000
Bruno Launais - 608,000
Tristan Clemencon - 1,206,000
Jonathan Azoulay - 543,000

4.30pm: Break time
Players take their first 15-minute break of the day at the end of level 24. That sets the chip counters in motion and they will return to us with seven names and seven numbers momentarily.
