Negreanu takes us inside BCPC victory

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

This past weekend, Daniel Negreanu won the BC Poker Championship for more than $370,000. Today, he sent us his thoughts on the event. He takes us through the final table and all the big hands.

by Daniel Negreanu

I won!

It might have been a relatively inexperienced final table, but they were all good players. It amazes me how much better players are getting and I love it. Sure it makes it harder to win, but I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of playing high level poker in the late stages of a tournament.

This final table went very well for me. Here is a brief synopsis of how it all went down:

Hand #1: Literally the first hand dealt at the final table I pick up KK in the cut off. Since there was no small blind I decided to min-raise to 120k instead of my standard 136k at the 30k-60k level with a 6k ante. The player on the button had a bit over a million and shipped it with 10-10. He had no choice I don't think, and he did the right thing as I'd usually fold there unless I had a big hand.

Hand #2: The kid Warren had me confused and outplayed me on back to back hands where I paid him off. The first went like this: He raised from the button and I called with Q-10. Flop K-8-4...check-check. Turn a 4... check-check. river a 10 and I check-called a bet of 310k. He showed KJ.

Hand #3: I raised the kid Warren's blind with KJ and he called. The flop came Q-5-3 with two clubs. check-check. Turn the Qc... check-check. River came a 2 and he bet 350k this time. I called him with the King high and he showed Q-9... oops!

Hand #4: We were three handed at this point and I was behind in chips until I made it 178k from the button with 88, blinds at 40k-80k with an 8k ante. Warren called. The flop came A 8 6 with two clubs. He checked and I fired out a pretty quick bet of 210k. He called. The turn was an Ace and he fired 350k. I called pretty quickly trying to represent a hand like 10-10 and hope he might try to push me off of it on the river. That, plus if he's drawing, I'd like him to hit! Most importantly, though, if a 6 hit the river I might be able to get away from the hand if he has an Ace and figure I'll get paid on the river anyway. The river was a Jack and he moved me in for my last 1.3 million. I called, and he showed 4-5 off.

The heads up match started dead even with 5 million a piece and blinds of 50k-100k. I planned on using my standard approach heads up and would make any adjustments necessary. Based on the way he was playing me heads up, I quickly felt like I had the right strategy and should be able to grind him down with better fundamentals. He later told me he'd never actually played heads up before, which gives me an even bigger advantage.

I think I played perfectly against him. I laid down a pair twice to him on the river and he later told me I was right both times. I never let him win a big pot until he got really short. I raised to 20k with A-10 on the button and he went all in for a million more with Kd Qd. The flop came 9-6-5 and it looked good. The turn was a 7d putting a backdoor flush draw out there, and the Jd hit the river! He doubled up, and bizarre as this is going to sound I think I was genuinely happy for him and cheered for him. He's a really nice kid and I was happy to see him get a bit psyched up, but I still felt strongly that I'd beat him.

BC Poker Championship. RiverRock2008-11-232008 - Version 2 (11).jpg

The FINAL HAND: I min-raised to 200k with 10h 7h and he called. The flop came 8s 7s 3h. He checked and I bet 200k- he called. The turn was a Qd and he checked again. I felt like he was drawing so I bet 400k. He went all i for 1.6 million more. I didn't think he would play Q-3 based on the heads up action thus far so I ruled that out. If he had a Queen high flush draw, I think he would have gambled with his hand on the flop. If he had the 8, a check-raise had to be his move. I finally felt like it was a move with a hand like J-9 or something like that. I called and he showed: 9-7! I had him out kicked and it held up for the win.

It's the first tournament I've ever actually won with my favorite hand. That was pretty cool so I decided to keep the two cards and will put them somewhere.

BC Poker Championship. RiverRock2008-11-232008 - Version 3 (1).jpg

690 players showed up for the tournament, the biggest field I'd ever beaten. To do it in Canada was legitimately special and I think it's going to make for great TV when it airs. I'm really hoping that this might help spark an even bigger buy in event at the River Rock next year. I genuinely believe they could hold a 10k buy in and get 300 players easy, especially if they have online qualifiers. I'm looking forward to returning next year. They treated me very well and I had a great time.

After it was over a bunch of all went to dinner. I noticed that Adam, the second place finisher was having dinner with five of his friends. I invited them all to join us and picked up the tab. After dinner we changed and a large group of us, including Adam and his friends went to a club called Republic. Brad Booth hooked us up with a huge area to chill and we hung out there till pretty late. With dinner, and paying the bar tab, the night ended up being pretty expensive for me but it was all worth it.

Now I plan on... sleeping. I just finished doing some TV stuff and really need to catch up on some R and R and am already looking forward to the $15,000 Bellagio event. That event has been very good to me in the past and I'm coming in on a roll feeling very confident. With the Bellagio structure being so deep on the first three days I always feel great about my chances to do well there.

APPT Sydney: Meet Mr. Eastgate, WSOP champion

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The weather in Great Britain could be better. Sure, it's not the Arctic or anything, but it's not balmy-sit-around-in-your shirt-sleeves weather, either. You know, like a place in the southern hemisphere called Sydney.

One Mr. Peter Eastgate (you remember him...2008 WSOP champion?) is looking forward to a few things in Australia, one of which he's not embarrassed to specify.

"The weather," he said, "because it is so cold in England right now."

One might assume Eastgate is lining his clothes with hundred dollar bills right now to shield himself from the cold in the UK. Instead, he's booking his plane tickets and preparing to fly to Sydney for the Asia Pacific Poker Tour event next week.

Since holding up his bricks of cash in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, Eastgate has been chilling out (apparently, literally) in England

"I've been relaxing, and now I'm preparing myself for the tournaments coming up before Christmas," he told us.

Sydney will mark both the end of the APPT's second season and Eastgate's return to the felt as a world champion. The 22-year-old record-breaker is a newcomer to the land down under. "It's my first time, so I'm very excited."

As we told you yesterday, PokerStars is running last chance satellites to the Sydney event. If you'd like your chance to play against the world champin, get your seat while you still can.

The PokerStars Blog will have full coverage of the event and Eastgate's return. Join us here for all the action December 2-7.

Negreanu takes down British Columbia Poker Championship

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Daniel Negreanu, as we all know, loves him some Canada. So, when he had the chance to go up north for the British Columbia Poker Championship, he didn't hesitate. In fact, he even agreed to do some television commentary if he busted before the final table of six players began. As one exec at the tournament told me, "Daniel was unavailable for commentary."

Negreanu battled through a field of 697 players at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond and took first place for $371,000.

Now, news of winning Negreanu winning a tournament is a lot like saying "Breaking News: The sun came up in the east today!" Fortunately, there is a companion story to go along with this news.

Our spies on the ground tell us Negreanu, as usual, had some side action going to keep things interesting. He and Gabe Kaplan had a $2,500 last-longer bet. If either of them made the money, the other player would pay $10,000. If either player made it to the final table it was another $25,000.

And so, late yesterday poor Kaplan was stuck $37,500.

As it turns out, though, there was as escape clause in the bet. If either Kaplan or Negreanu won the event, all bets were off and the winner of the event paid the other $2,500. As we've already noted, Negreanu won. Kaplan went from being stuck $37,500 to winning $2,500 and Negreanu swung $40,000 in the other direction.

Congratulations to Negreanu for his big win...and to Kaplan for getting unstuck.

Star-studded weekend rattles PokerStars Sunday majors

There were very few places you could be that wouldn't be considered "late" when the biggest story of the weekend happened. It was after 4am ET when two members of Team PokerStars got heads up in the PokerStars Sunday 500. Andre Akkari and Gavin Griffin went head-to-head in a tough heads-up battle. It took a pretty serious cooler to end it.

Akkari won the event for more than $90,000. Griffin's second place finish earned him a little more than $66,000.

You, like me, might have thought that would be the only big story of the weekend. We both would've been wrong. That same night, online and live phenom Danny "THE__D__RY " Ryan went and won the Sunday Million for nearly $190,000. Not only is Danny known as a great guy and great player, he was recently voted Best PokerStars Qualifier at the European Poker Tour's EPT Awards. Congrats, Danny, on a great score.

Danny Ryan

Add to that, there were nearly a couple dozen other big events going on at PokerStars. Quite a weekend, indeed.

For a complete listing of winners from this weekend, check out our 11-23-08 PokerStars Sunday Tournament results.

Congratulations to all the winners. See you next week!

Persistence Took THE__D__RY to Victory in the November 23rd Sunday Million

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The holidays are approaching. But instead of heading to the store to buy gifts or, in the U.S., the turkey and accompanying groceries for Thanksgiving dinner later this week, poker players had something else in mind on this late November Sunday. What could be more important than the holidays? Sunday tournaments on PokerStars, of course!

But seriously, with the holidays approaching and the subsequent start of the new year, poker enthusiasts are looking for a way to show improved tournament results for the year, and if a few thousand dollars are won just before gift-buying season, then all the better!

A total of 7,755 players from around the world joined together in the spirit of poker to play the infamous $215 NLHE Sunday Million with the $1.5 million guarantee. But with so many players, the prize pool rose above that guarantee to $1,551,000, so the wealth for the night would be spread around just a bit further.

Joining in on the Sunday fun were several of the Team PokerStars Pros, including Gavin Griffin, Isabelle Mercier, William Thorson, Chad Brown, Vanessa Rousso, Lee Nelson, Hevad Khan, and Andre Akkari. More names played and cashed in the event, including PokerStars blogger-turned-pro player Maria Mayrinck (901st place), Barry Greenstein (483rd), Ray Rahme (394th) and Marcin Horecki (174th).

And speaking of making the money, hand-for-hand play commenced at 3 hours and 43 minutes into the tournament with 1,171 players remaining, and it took about four minutes to find Thorbarden out of the event in 1171st place. That made way for rooney69 to become the first of the tournament to be eliminated in the money, as the reward was $310.20 for the 1170th place finish, and approximately 50 more players followed to the rail in only one minute. Play continued at an accelerated pace for awhile, as is typical after the money bubble bursts, but once the event was reduced to less than 50 players, it slowed quite a bit.

Once the tournament reached two tables, which wasn’t until more than eight and a half hours in, players stayed cautious, taking more than thirty minutes to reach the final table. Finally, with the elimination of Jan-E1981 in 11th place, hand-for-hand play ensued. In the very first H4H hand, Xanny21 pushed all-in preflop with a short stack of little more than 700,000. xfadomas666 called from the small blind, and Major_BomB came along from the big blind to see the 5d-3h-As flop. Players checked, as they did after the 6s on the turn and the 2c on the river. Major_BomB bet out with 5c-4s for the straight, xfadomas666 folded to that bet, and Xanny21 showed pocket sevens for the loss. Xanny21 left in tenth place with $7,755 for final table bubble status.

The final nine players took their seats at Table 1032, and the starting final table chip counts were as follows:

Seat 1: A_Ivanovich (6753250 in chips)
Seat 2: Major_BomB (12095966 in chips)
Seat 3: Stammdogg (7207686 in chips)
Seat 4: parachuting (17204381 in chips)
Seat 5: xfadomas666 (7789228 in chips)
Seat 6: THE__D__RY (7502280 in chips)
Seat 7: Verichip (6436778 in chips)
Seat 8: Hikkespett (5545591 in chips)
Seat 9: thebosshead (7014840 in chips)

Sunday Million final table 11.23.08.JPG

Only a few hands into the action, the short stack at the table decided to move. After a raise from xfadomas666 to 1,200,000, Hikkespett pushed all-in for his last 4,682,712 with As-Tc, and xfadomas666 called with a dominating Ad-Jh. The board came 3h-8c-9s-7h, and though the Th on the river looked good for Hikkespett, it made a straight for xfadomas666 and gave him the pot. Hikkespett was suddenly gone from the final table in ninth place with a $10,857.00 prize.

Next, the players all seemed a bit stunned at the downfall of A_Ivanovich. After sitting at the top of the leaderboard when the field reached the final two tables, he lost ground and was suddenly the short stack with only eight players left. A_Ivanovich made a raise preflop to 2,888,586 with pocket jacks, and when Stammdogg came over the top with an all-in reraise, A_Ivanovich called all-in. Stammdogg showed pocket eights and would need to improve. The board did what he asked when it came 9s-Jh-6h-Ts-7h to give him the straight, and A_Ivanovich’s trips were no good. The former chip leader was gone in eighth place with $17,836.50 as a consolation prize.

A few hands later, thebosshead took a major hit when THE__D__RY doubled through him with A-K that turned into a full house to beat thebosshead’s pocket sixes. thebosshead was short-stacked with only 637,560 going into the next hand, and he pushed preflop all-in. Stammdogg and parachuting both called. The two checked the Qs-Td-5h flop, the 3c turn, and the Ks river. Stammdogg showed pocket fours, but parachuting turned over Kd-8c for a pair of kings. thebosshead simply mucked and left the tournament in seventh place with $27,142.50.

With six players remaining, action slowed somewhat, and it seemed that caution was the word of Level 36. Verichip did take the opportunity to double through Stammdogg, however, leaving the latter as the new short stack. Tried as he did, he could not climb above the six million chip mark for long and hovered around the 5.5 million spot for some time. Finally, when Major_BomB made a move all-in preflop, Stammdogg looked down at Kh-Qs in the big blind and decided to call all-in. Major_BomB showed 5h-4h and was in trouble. However, the board brought a five on the flop and nothing for Stammdogg all the way down as it showed 7d-5c-2s-Ad-2d. Stammdogg was sent to the rail in sixth place with a $39,550.50 prize.

Verichip had been sticking with a relatively short stack for awhile but outlasted Stammdogg with it. Finally, he pushed all-in preflop with Ks-Qc and his last 5,831,940, and xfadomas666 called from the small blind with Ad-Jc. The board ran out Ac-7h-2h-Kd-As, and trip aces were good for the win, while Verichip was relegated to the rail in fifth place, which was worth $55,060.50.

Major_BomB had been playing solidly throughout the final table but found himself the shortest stack with a little less than ten million chips. THE__D__RY tried to get in on the action preflop with a raise to 1.6 million, but Major_BomB pushed all-in for 9,879,253. parachuting called from the small blind, prompting THE__D__RY to fold with a comment: “well that makes that easier.” Major_BomB showed As-Kc, and parachuting turned over pocket nines. The race was on and to be determined by the virtual dealer, who gave them 7h-Qc-2h-7d-5s. That was that, and Major_BomB was forced out in fourth place with $70,570.50 in holiday shopping money.

Three-handed action saw xfadomas666 as the smallest stacked player for most of the action, until he doubled through THE__D__RY to climb up to a more-comfortable level of 16,294,224. It was parachuting who, no pun intended, went into a freefall. parachuting called an all-in bet by THE__D__RY, and parachuting’s Ah-7h couldn’t beat the Ac-Kd of THE__D__RY, so the latter doubled through parachuting in a pot worth just over 46 million.

parachuting then got involved with THE__D__RY again, calling a 2.4 million preflop raise to see the flop. After the As-Kh-Qc was dealt, THE__D__RY bet, and parachuting called the 2,850,000. But it was the turn of a 9c that prompted a 20 million bet from THE__D__RY and an all-in call from parachuting for his last 11,824,112. parachuting showed Kc-Jd for the pair of kings, but THE__D__RY turned over Ah-5d for the top pair of aces. An inconsequential 8s came on the river, and parachuting was out in third place with $86,856.00 in earnings for the day.

Heads-up action began with xfadomas666 at a significant deficit, with chip counts as follows:

Seat 5: xfadomas666 (14294224 in chips)
Seat 6: THE__D__RY (63255776 in chips)

xfadomas666 quickly asked about a deal in the chat box but got no response from THE__D__RY. That led to a more desperate move on the part of xfadomas666, as he saw his chips disappear on nearly every hand. THE__D__RY made an initial raise to 2,040,000, and xfadomas666 calmly called to see the 6d-4h-Ts on the flop. Both players checked, but when the 8s came on the turn, xfadomas666 bet all-in for 10,574,224. THE__D__RY called with 9c-7h and showed the straight, while xfadomas666 had to turn over his Qs-8d and meager pair of eights. The 3s on the river changed nothing, and xfadomas666 was eliminated in second place, which was good for a $128,112.60 addition to his PokerStars account.

THE__D__RY took first place and $189,997.50 in the 11/23 edition of the Sunday Million! It has been a long time coming for the seasoned online player. With hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings on PokerStars in only a few years, not to mention five cashes at the 2008 WCOOP, THE__D__RY had been waiting for a big score. Taking down the Sunday Million has to be sweet for the long-time PokerStars player, so congratulations to THE__D__RY for taking it down!

Sunday Million Results for 11/23/08:

Taking Everyone to School: Cobus83 Takes Down the Sunday Warm-Up

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Just two months ago PokerStars was filling the prize pool with the $750,000 guaranteed money. Now, it has become commonplace to see yet another smashed guarantee as it was tonight with 3,899 making the final money tally a whopping $779,800 to be broken up into smaller pieces for the 585 players that cashed tonight. Among those cashing were Team PokerStars pro John Duthie in 325th and Andre “aakkari” Akkari clocking in 146th place for $935.76. They unfortunately did not join the final nine whom played on in search of bigger cash including the $101,374.00 for winning the Sunday Warm-Up.

The chip leader with five tables remaining was no stranger to success; Sebastian “taktloss47” Ruthenberg was the runner up in the 2007 WCOOP Event #5 good for $260,184.82 (final table report link here) and third place the same year in the European Poker Tour Dortmund event, held a sizable lead into the final 45. But, Sebastian’s night would end after a rough set vs. straight flush draw hand against final tablist Powergolf, which the straight got there without the board pairing and Cobus83 trapping the German with pocket queens in a blind verus blind battle. Ruthenberg left in 13th place good for $3,119.20 in winnings.

Cassidy13 did the honors in opening up the final table as he took out BrainBusto in 10th as Cassidy13’s pocket nines proved to be the victor over the Ah-6s of BrainBusto on the 4c-3c-Qs-Th-3h board. Kameleont would carry the weight of the chip leader into the final nine, here’s how they shaped up:

SunWarmUp112308.jpg

Seat 1: Kameleont (8690525 in chips)
Seat 2: Powergolf (2952791 in chips)
Seat 3: fffffs (6535376 in chips)
Seat 4: NewsKoooL (5100647 in chips)
Seat 5: Cobus83 (6271711 in chips)
Seat 6: Mr nOmadsen (2438436 in chips)
Seat 7: IDOLLS (1346112 in chips)
Seat 8: Cassidy13 (4193730 in chips)
Seat 9: Trueblue333 (1460672 in chips)

No clear-cut chip dominance starting off the final table but IDOLLS and Trueblue333 had some serious work to do with the blinds starting off at 80,000/160,000 ante 16,000. Unfortunately, one of them went up and the other went out in back-to-back hands. IDOLLS found As-Js in the small blind and 3-bet all-in for a little over a million off a middle position raise to 400,000 by fffffs. fffffs made the call leaving well over five million behind with Ks-Ts. The flop Jd-4s-6d increased the lead for IDOLLS, but ffffs found a running two pair with the Kh and Tc on the turn and river sending IDOLLS home with $6,706.28 in ninth place.

Trueblue333 however would skyrocket to the seven million chip mark thanks to the former chip leader Kameleont in back-to-back hands. A flopped straight with Kh-Tc against Kameleont top pair, then a cooler of pocket queens for Kameleont and pocket aces for Trueblue333 which flopped a boat, took a 7.7 million chip pot and temporary chip lead in just two hands going from eighth to first in the standings.

The hot action continued as five hands later a blind versus blind battle would send home our eighth place finisher. NewsKoool sent out the odd $379,998 raise from the button only to have the fireworks go off behind him. Cobus83 in the small blind re-raised to 999,999 and Mr nOmadsen in the big blind pushed for his remaining 2.2 million. NewsKoool decided to read a different section of the paper, but Cobus83 made the call with Ah-Tc for the 5.2 million chip pot leaving 2.8 million behind. Black kings for Mr nOmadsen had him well into the lead on the turn of 3s-6d-2c-7c and you can see where this is going as the dirty ace of spades on the river handed $9,747.50 to Mr nOmadsen in eighth place for a new monitor or laptop. Cobus83 would shoot up to 8.8 million in chips good enough for second place.

Started as a coin flip, and another shocking river card doubled up Cassidy13 and left Powergolf with a 80 foot putt for par with a severe break from left to right. Virtually even in chips, Cassidy13 open shoved his 2.7 million in chips from the cutoff and Powergolf made the call with a suited big slick (As-Ks). Cassidy13 found his race with pocket fours (4s-4c) but found himself behind a wall of hearts on the flop that included an ace for Powergolf. The turn showed a board of Ah-3h-Qh-2s opening up four 5’s for a wheel. “Rivered again” may have wedged out of Powergolf’s jaw as the five of spades completed the runner-runner wheel straight and his scraps would be eaten by Kameleont five hands later. $15,596 in seventh place for the links lover as the blinds increased to 100,000/200,000 ante 20,000 for the six remaining players.

As the players broke for five minutes, you can too by reading up on the PokerStars World Cup news as they continued its qualifying rounds today with the US states, Canadian province, and German group finals. Check out the action from these links from the PokerStarsBlog (Germany, US and Canada early results, or follow all of the World Cup qualifying action thru this link).

Blind steals were aplenty for the next twenty or so hands as no flops were seen and the preflop raiser took down the tidy 525,000 chips sitting in the middle with blinds at 125,000/250,000 ante 25,000. fffffs, Cobus83, and Trueblue333 were tight at the top with ten, nine, and eight million chips respectively and Cassidy13, NewsKoooL, and Kameleont were on the lower end all sitting with three million and change.

fffffs continued to build his stack with timely re-raises of Trueblue333’s blind steals and found himself sitting on 13 million in chips when he raised to 570,000 from the button and was facing a push from NewsKoooL in the small blind for his remaining 2.5 million. After a few blinks of thinking, fffffs made the call with Ac-9c and the coin flip was on as NewsKoooL’s pocket fives (5s-5c) were slightly in the lead. A beautiful flop for fffffs of Tc-Kc-7h gave him a new set of outs to a flush as well as the overcards, and the Ad on the turn gave him the lead which would hold up to the river Th, shipping the 5.6 million pot to ffffs and increasing his chip lead to 16.6 million chips. A sixth place finish for NewsKoooL was worth $23,394.00 tonight with hopes that presto will provide more magic in the future.

After a lull of nearly 30 hands without significant action, and NewsKoooL busting in sixth, just four hands later Trueblue333 and beginning final table chip leader Kameleont tangled for another big pot between the two. Trueblue333 raised to 1 million from the cutoff, as Kameleont came over the top on the button with a shove for 3.5 million and the blinds went back to watching Sunday Night Football. Trueblue333 made the call leaving 3.2 million behind and showed Ad-Tc versus Kameleont’s black sevens. Flopped set of trip aces for Trueblue333 on the flop of 5s-Ah-As propelled him well into the lead. The two outer did not appear on the turn and river as the nine of spades and diamonds rained down and $31,192.00 was shipped to Kameleont as his nemesis Trueblue333 chopped up his chip lead and then sent Kameleont home in fifth place less then an hour later.

A few all-ins by Cassidy13, including doubling up off of Trueblue333 with a AK vs. AJ hand. The double up spread out the chips a bit with four players left, as fffffs’ chip lead was only a few million over Cobus83 and Cassidy13 with Trueblue333 looking up with five million in chips when the blinds moved up to 150,000/300,000 ante 30,000. But, no talks of chopping or any kind of chatter would be found, as the chat box shows nothing but hand result information nearly the entire final table up to this point.

As the blinds moved up to 250,000/500,000 ante 50,000 so did the big hands as Cassidy13 found himself getting short with only eight BBs left but doubling up off of fffffs who subsequently dropped to nearly eight million chips. Cobus83 racked up an impressive lead with nearly 17 million chips at this point as the four-handed match was played without fear as all four players used aggression and position to keep themselves ahead of the blinds at this point with nearly a million chips in the middle preflop:

Seat 3: fffffs (7932625 in chips)
Seat 5: Cobus83 (17339645 in chips)
Seat 8: Cassidy13 (7363680 in chips)
Seat 9: Trueblue333 (6354050 in chips)

Cobus83 would open up his lead to nearly 22 million in chips as the other players (Trueblue333, Cassidy13, and fffffs) were left to fight among themselves as Cobus83 held more then half the chips in play as just before the blinds moved up to 300,000/600,000 ante 60,000 fffffs and Trueblue333 got their stacks into the middle preflop in a blind versus blind battle. fffffs was slightly ahead with Ac-7h versus the Kh-Qc of Trueblue333 in the virtual coin flip and fffffs had three million behind when they created a 9.2 million chip pot. The flopped pair of aces for fffffs would hold up as the board ran out 8d-Tc-Ad-3h-9d and ended Trueblue333’s night in fourth place. After the $38,990.00 was sent to Trueblue333, the other players finally found the letter keys of their keyboards and asked for the chip chop numbers to be presented.

In the shortest agreement since offering ice cream instead of broccoli for dessert to my kids, we had a chop of the first thru third place prizes:

Cobus83: $83,819
fffffs: $68,210
Cassidy13: $56,314

Now that the big money was settled, the three played on for the title of Sunday Warm-Up champion and $10,000 left aside for the winner. Cassidy13 would strike first blood against fffffs, as he doubled up to almost 15 million chip when a turned Th gave him the lucky card he needed as his Ah-Ts overcame the As-Js of fffffs. Several hands of blinds steals would go on as none of the players were readily giving in. But, it was Cassidy13 putting the nails into the coffin of fffffs as the two squared off again preflop nineteen hands later. With the blinds at 300,000/600,000 ante 60,000 Cassidy13 raised from the small blind to 1.8 million and was met by ffffs’ shove for his 7.2 million chip stack. Unlike the last big hand between the two, this was a coin flip for the 15 million chips in the middle.

Cassidy13: Ah-Jd
fffffs: Th-Tc

Things went sour quickly for fffffs as Cassidy found trip jacks on the Jc-9s-Jh flop. Things did not improve on the turn as the Ac sealed up the hand and Cassidy13 became the new chip leader with 20 million chips thanks to the jacks full of aces and fffffs would exit in third place with $68,210 from the chop agreement.

From the previous play from these players and virtually same chip stacks, a long heads up battle was sure to take place…

… but it did not as Cobus83 took the chip lead after just four hands of heads up play when the following hand would seal his victory in this week’s Sunday Warm-Up.

Cassidy13 started off with 16 million to Cobus83’s 20 million and the blinds still at 300,000/600,000 ante 60,000. A raise on the button to 1.8 million by Cassidy13 was met quickly by a shove all-in by the shaded George Washingon icon and Cassidy13 made the call with Ad-7d. Usually any ace is a great heads-up hand, unless you’re outkicked as Cobus83 turned over Ah-Qh. The 4h-Jh-Kc flop took away several outs from Cassidy13 as any ten or heart would seal up the victory. Looking for a black seven, Cassidy13 wouldn’t find them as the Ks on the turn and 2h on the river gave Cobus83 the nut flush and the extra $10,000 for the victory.

From the chop Cassidy would take home $56,314 for second place and Cobus83 would add $10,000 to his biggest piece of the pie from the chop, to total $93,819 for tonight’s win!

World Cup of Poker: USA & Canada Divisional Qualifier Early Results

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Today was an intense one for poker players in the United States and Canada. There were intense World Cup team rounds that included players from all corners of the two countries, all competing for spots on their national teams. But this was one level of several to come to guarantee those seats.

Every player today won their team round spots through the state and provincial finals last week, which gave them the opportunity to represent their area of the world in today’s qualifiers. They joined together with tournament leaderboard (TLB) qualifiers to play for the opportunity to take the next step - Division USA or Division Canada. The winning state or province from each group would live to play again next weekend in the National Team finals.

The November 23rd rounds kicked off with the following three U.S. groups:

Group 1: CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, NC, PA, RI, SC, VT, VA
Group 2: AL, AR, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, MI, MN, MS, MO, OH, OK, TN, TX, WI, WV
Group 3: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, MT, NE, NV, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY

And the three Canadian groups were as follows:

Group 1: Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec
Group 2: Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan
Group 3: Alberta, British Columbia, Canadian Territories

The USA and Canada kicked off their team score rounds with the first group playing at 1:00pm ET. With some tables, action was fast and furious, like with Quebec leading early as derek8 and sclark792 won their tables and miloup007 came in second. Quebec clearly had the lead, though nothing would be decided officially until the Group 1 TLB 2 was completed. With the three other tables having been decided, the one that was still in progress looked something like this:

Screen shot - Longest running Canada Round 1 - 11.23.08.JPG

Meanwhile, the first four tables of the U.S. state team score round were all still in progress. Considering they each consisted of 17 players, it was no surprise that it took them longer to finish and determine the points awarded each player and team. In the end, it was Maryland who failed to qualify for any points whatsoever, with none of the four team members finishing better than 13th place in any of the rounds. Others who had similar results with fewer than ten points per team were Maine, Florida, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

However, on the brighter side, there were several teams with strong showings. Connecticut did well because scobgo won that particular round, and New Jersey saw the same because of mkind0516’s victory. Delaware looked good because of iWON05’s second place, jhastings22’s third place, and final tables from Harks259 and PokerNatzi11. But no one team could beat the amazing performance of North Carolina. With RandALLin and DAPBowler taking first in their respective tournaments, they took teammates XbonezX and CapeFear777 on to the division round, as North Carolina clinched the victory in Group 1.

Canada was plowing through their games, having long completed Round 1. As predicted in the early showings, Quebec took it down and would take its team members to the next level of the World Cup.

The other Canadians were finishing the second group tournaments, with only four players in each, in very little time. Ontario wasn’t looking good with two fourth place finishers on its team, but Saskatchewan and Manitoba tied due to having each player finish in a different position in their respective tournaments - first, second, third, and fourth. That left the win for Nova Scotia, which was solidified when lobstrman29 and AK**QUEEN** each took a first place. With the scores tabulated, Nova Scotia would join Quebec as the winner of their round.

The second group of U.S. team score rounds started 90 minutes late, as was also announced for the third group, and with 17 players again in each, it would take awhile. One of the most contentious and long-running was the one below:

Screen shot - Contentious Group 2 US table - 11.23.08.JPG

Though wormdaddy12 held the chip lead for quite awhile, the difference between all players’ chip counts were nothing that couldn’t be turned around with one or two well-played hands. As it played on, along with the other Group 2 U.S. tables, Canada sealed everything up.

The third and last group of Canadians included Alberta, British Columbia, and the Canadian Territories. With only three players in each tournament for that group, it was decided quickly and decisively. British Columbia had three third place finishers and a second, which relegated it to last place, but it was the Canadian Territories that didn’t leave anything to fate. pam05 grabbed a victory, as did polarbrr and Muck Or Call, and deaonhope took a second place finish, giving that team the highest score by far of the three teams. The Canadian Territories would join Quebec and Nova Scotia in Division Canada.

With only the U.S. still playing on the November afternoon - heading into evening - there was much left to be decided. As the tables played on, and as best could be determined with some of the TLB players unlisted as of the tournament start time, it looked like Wisconsin was running way with the Group 2 lead. Ohio scored high with Chesskid chalking up a win, and Missouri scored a second and third place for points. Tennessee also had a win from Pup Dalton, but it seemed as if Wisconsin would take the group title after LaddFactor came in first and AlwaysTile13 and JBDenaro157 each grabbed fourth place spots in their respective tournaments.

The last of the United States players - Group 3 - continued their competitions as well, and when the final list of TLB players and point gatherers in this group are in later this evening, the final results will be tallied.

A full report of all of today’s winners representing U.S. and Canada will be reported tomorrow. Those winners will prepare to take the next steps in the World Cup nationals and soon find out exactly who will be on their way to the Bahamas in January. World Cup of Poker: Germany Determines Four Divisional Qualifiers

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

German poker players, again, made their decisions and played their European hearts out while the Americans and Canadians slept. As North American dreams consisted of the team score rounds today, the Germans were actually at their tournament seats and playing for the honor of their respective provinces.

Last weekend, a total of 32 players qualified to play today. Upon their return, they were placed in four groups to compete for the chance to take their province into the Division Germany round. The groups were as follows:

Group 1: Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein
Group 2: Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen–Anhalt
Group 3: Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Sachsen, Thüringen
Group 4: Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland

One province from each group emerged victorious as points were given for the place in which each player finished at their table. Three of the individual provinces performed perfectly and secured spots in the division round - NiceBet_1985 and MaxPro 101 each finished first for Berlin, TomTomSnow and DeepBlue3112 each won for Nordrhein-Westfalen, and nobody I and Jo1701 clinched first place in their tournaments for Sachsen. And it was close for the Hamburg team, as 1Man@work took first in that round but noregretsall took third. However, the closest team to beat was Brandenburg with two second place finishes, but the points total got Hamburg into the final four. In the end, the four final teams were determined, and the following players would go on to Division Germany:

Group 1: Hamburg - 1Man@work and noregretsall
Group 2: Berlin - NiceBet_1985 and MaxPro 101
Group 3: Sachsen - nobody I and Jo1701
Group 4: Nordrhein-Westfalen - TomTomSnow and DeepBlue3112

From here, there are others who will join the team as it stands thus far. There will be Round 1 qualifiers taking place on November 27th and 28th to determine the two freeroll tournament players who will continue on. In addition, the top four tournament leaderboard (TLB) players in Germany, as determined by points from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007, will automatically qualify for the Germany 1 or Germany 2 team, and the top finishing TLB player will have the option to be the captain of Team Germany 1. The second place TLB finisher will subsequently be able to captain Team Germany 2.

With that said, there is one goal in mind. Each of these players wants to play an integral role in taking Team Germany to the World Cup of Poker V in the Bahamas in January of 2009. There is a world championship title at stake, not to mention the trip to one of the most beautiful resort islands in the world to play a little poker and soak up some of the Caribbean sunshine. It is the chance of a lifetime, and all of these weeks of qualifiers and playoffs will ultimately end there. Not a bad place to finish it up.

Congratulations to all of the German players who took their provinces to the next round! To follow along with their journey and see the next steps of the series, visit the World Cup of Poker V page.

World Cup of Poker: Three divisions to lock up team members

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

By the end of this weekend, we will know the first official participants in the PokerStars World Cup of Poker V.

The U.S, Canada, and German divisions are all scheduled to run their state and province finals on Sunday, November 23.

Here's how tomorrow's events will work.

The three divisions have been chopped up into three or four groups. Each of those groups will play a team score round to determine which state or province wins the group round. That means the groups will play a series of tournaments against each other to determine their total team score. Whichever state or province team has the highest score in the group will secure its place on the national team and compete in the December 7 Division Play-offs.

Here's how PokerStars has broken down the groups.

U.S.A.

The 51 state teams have been separated into three groups containing 17 states each:

Group 1: CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, NC, PA, RI, SC, VT, VA
Group 2: AL, AR, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, MI, MN, MS, MO, OH, OK, TN, TX, WI, WV
Group 3: AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, MT, NE, NV, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY

The three winning states, one from each group, then progress into the three state slots in Division USA.

Canada

The eleven Canada provinces and territories divisions have been divided into three groups. The winners of each group will get a spot on the national World Cup of Poker team.

Group 1: Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec
Group 2: Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan
Group 3: Alberta, British Columbia, Canadian Territories

Germany

As was done in the U.S. and Canada, PokerStars divided the 16 German provinces into four groups. The winner of each group will get a spot on the national team.

Group 1: Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein
Group 2: Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen–Anhalt
Group 3: Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Sachsen, Thüringen
Group 4: Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland
